Scott Thunes bass part is probably my favorite piece ever performed on that instrument. Drowning Witch is one of my favorite Zappa compositions. There is an eeriness to it that is not often found in his music.

It cuts right into Envelopes and the two go together perfectly. The two songs should always be played together.

The first solo is insanely good, one of the best Zappa solo on an official release. It's peak Zappa as a guitarist.

St. Ettiene’s is one of his most beautiful guitar leads in my opinion. What a joy to have both of the guitar performances in one song!

The really impossible part was never played correctly all the way through on any given date, so Frank went and edited that together from around 15 different performances. Remember, we're talking 1982 editing technology. Razor blade and scotch tape, and his ear to pick out any given section - as small as just a few notes - were selected and edited together. That's the genius of Frank Zappa.

I remember getting this when it came out, and immediately proceeded to freak my friends out with it. Truely one of my favorite pieces of music !

Honestly this is your best Zappa reaction I’ve seen. Most genuine. Well done.

Did anyone mention that the minimalist cover art is ingenious? The triangle is not a tiny iceberg but a pointy witch hat and the trapezoid is a ship's bow...

The fact that chad wackerman and Scott thunes were in their early twenties is absolutely outrageous. Their playing is just unbelievable.

It sounds like a medical condition. "I'm sorry Mrs. Williams, but we knew he had a history of Frank Zappa...."

I sometimes get in the shower or am driving somewhere and just think of "She could mutate insanely....she could mutate insanely" with the luxurious accompaniment and start laughing stupidly. Then "Maybe a submarine could save her....and take her home to the Navy...." Gorgeous. And wack. "It's time to go Hawaiian"...

I'm of the opinion that staying up all hours of night, meaning the wee hours of the morning, drinking cup after cup of black coffee and smoking nicotine will make your mind race, and that's why his music was so frenetic.

The cover of this album shows the ship arriving too late to save the drowning witch. It's hilarious!
@Royalle_with_Cheese2 ай бұрын
That cover and the title is from 1954, a Droodle, from Roger Price. Frank liked it and contacted Mr. Price to get permission to use it. That was good for Price too because people became interested in his works and a new book of his droodles was published. Win-Win.

Yes, the witch's hat is visible just in front of the bow of the ship.

There's a movie from the 50s called Attack of the 50 Foot Woman. I saw it when I was a kid. Knowing Zappa's love for cheap 50s flicks, I gotta think that this song's lyrics refers to that main character, without getting into the actual story.

John, I don't think you have done any of Frank's Big Band music yet. By far the best stuff he has written. Try "Big Swifty, Gumbo Variations, Waka-Jawaka, son of Mr Green jeans" are just a few to start with....
