I used to love debates but I've slowly come to realise how pointless they are. They're just for ego stroking and gotchas. People pretend to be cordial but they're really just trying to destroy their opposition. Nobody really listens to eachother and its the same topics over and over again. Mike Winger is just going to say whatever some other protestant you've brought on has said. There's nothing new he's going to give you so the only reason you want to debate him is because you just have a bone to pick. There's no benefit in repeating yourselves but with a different person. I'm bored of KZbin debates and many people are echoing the same opinion as me.

When a Catholic said that no early Church Father believed in Grace by Faith alone, I decided to research and read up about it and realized what that person claimed wasn't true. I feel a lot of Catholics think that "if only you'd read more ancient texts, Protestants wouldn't be so ignorant", but if you do read it, it doesn't say what they so confidently claimed.

Going through trying to get my very Catholic family to accept that I no longer can believe in being Catholic. I have been very respectful in sharing why and my reasoning behind it. My father is still trying to tell me to come back or I’m doing a disservice to my children and am a bad mother for not “coming home”. It never felt like home. Just gave me a hollow, anxious heavy feeling like I was never good enough and guilted into still believing. Please pray for my husband and I and our children. I very much believe in God and have been working hard on my relationship with Jesus. That’s all I want for my children and they are taking interest into following my footsteps. I can’t really ask for more. Just guidance on how to deal with family who doesn’t like my decision.

I know exactly how you feel. I was born into this religion as most Mexican Americans are born into this mess. Like you, went through the motions, rituals, and traditions and could never fill that emptiness in my heart and continued in my sinful lifestyle, now I know why, never heard the Real Gospel of Jesus Christ, repent and believe and you'll be Born Again of God's Holy Spirit a new creation in Christ. It's funny how I'm typing this my eldery mother is praying the rosary, I've explained the gospel to her and my relatives, but to no avail. All we can do is pray for them and ask God Almighty to take off the Blinders. On my wife's side its dealing with Mormons another horrific cult, it's a battle. Stay strong and Never stop praying for your loved ones. Peace. Ex Catholics for Jesus Christ.

Praying for you and your family as you go through this. It is not easy. My husband left Catholicism a few years back and it was difficult with his side of the family. We still get comments from his family. We read our bible, we know that Gods word is our source of truth and we can rest in that knowing we are putting our faith in Jesus and not basing our faith on trying to please others or from pressure from family members. Knowing the word and knowing what you base your beliefs in are so important. Also praying to God for discernment. I can say now my Husband has never been more on fire for the Lord than he is now. And our family is changed for the better because of it.

Contrary to what Mike said in this video, the Catholic Church has made a distinction between the verbs earn and merit. Like many Catholics, I invite you to watch trent horn's rebuttal video on this video from Mike, he showed this distinction with examples. Excellent presentation. Former Catholic here. It's so simple yet my family and rabid catholics won't see the error of adding works to their salvation. It's a slap in the face to what Christ did on the cross and that's only one doctrine that blatently goes against Scripture. Catholicism teaches the Bible isn't the only thing to determine doctrine. They rely on what their former leaders have said is truth. So many other things but like i said they won't listen.

I was led to a Bible by the Lord and l opened the Bible and read the Gospel of John. I was saved..."born again" after hearing the Word of truth, the Gospel of my salvation exactly like Ephesians 1:13-14 says. I trusted and believed. Just like Paul did not command Gentiles to become Jews and under go circumcision...We Are not required to become Catholic. My Authority is the Holy Spirit inspired Scripture....not the church Father's...that can not agree with one another...nor did the Holy Spirit add them to the inspired scripture. 📜 Shouldn't a man or woman be able to pick up a Bible...hear the good news of Jesus Christ and come to faith? Satan is a liar... Ecumenism is not in the Bible. The Pope is saying all religions can come together. He has been speaking falsely for some time. As Jesus and Paul said..."Let no man deceive you." The Bible clearly says that Salvation is by Faith alone without works and if you add works...you've fallen from Grace. Galatians 1:8... Let them be accursed...🔥🔥🔥

As a preface I never take the laughable stupidity of D.Wood and any of his associates all that seriously. Also I don't watch Mike's material. It isn't of interest and so I won't comment either way. This is for several reasons, chief of which isn't any problem with their intellect itself or experience and reasoning skills. Rather, that it applies absolute opinions to chaos. And that will never accurately represent anything. As a non-christian who has lived in many of the places that you are hopefully fortunate to have never seen; I have regard for the Catholics. Why? Because of course, they were the Knights that for a thousand years kept our lands free. They fought and died, so that my people didn't. They did so because of their traditions and convictions. Readily forgotten by many in their judgement seat it seems. Without their Catholicism and belief in works of faith and divine retribution; we would all be dead. To the last man, woman or child. Anyone who believes, might almost say that God was with them in those days. Because they were EXTREMELY outnumbered. With unwavering bravery. They saved people they didn't know, in a land that wasn't their own and with beliefs they didn't share. You won't hear many of those stories today. Not in pathetic America and its neo-fascist 'call everyone a bigot an cancel them when you don't agree' culture. How would you like it if I blamed you for Afghanistan as a whole group. Instead of branding Brandon and his crones with the crime? I thought not. History says that Catholics combined the Bible. They went around painstakingly to assemble a cannon. With fair critique from all over Christendom. They defended the faith for over a thousand years before any people left. And they left because of the lies of one or two people, who wanted to conveniently remove books they didn't like. Who did your Jesus Christ leave in charge? Ah right. The first Popes. And you wonder why so many of us who don't care either way have such little respect for you? You spit on your own. Just as you spit on those you left behind in the ME. Hell, you even got your own soldiers killed. Protestantism is just some convenient fraud. That benefitted the agenda. The same thing you accuse them of. If your God exists, I am going to laugh hard when he blasts you off the earth and reforms the Church. It would be fracking HILARIOUS. To see you put in your place. I am no expert, as you've gathered. But you all bashing each other is just stupid and insulting. Time to grow up.

@@Ulice90 So demonic are your answers, where to begin? First, we are given permission to pray “for” one another, not “to” one another as if they had some special deification on our behalf. 2. The rich man in the parable “saw” Lazarus from a distance, obviously anyone within sight given the circumstances could carry a conversation. 3. Absolutely not, do “priest” have the authority to forgive or retain sins. We know that individual repentance from wickedness constitutes any forgiveness. All our works will be judged in the end. The authority given (John 20:23) in this passage was not the ability for one to have authority themselves to forgive individual sins, but to establish discipline in all the churches according to God’s Word for which one might be pardon or not. Believers living in unrepentant sin were to be expelled from the church and later received back if repentance was evident. 4. Revelation 5 . . . LOL, so deceived. Finally, Jesus never gave anyone the pre-eminence, nor Papistic authority of any man to forgive sins as in authority for which the Roman Catholic claims of remitting sin and of pronouncing pardon. We know that God is the only one who can forgive sin. Continue to isolate and splice scriptures out of their context and find yourself cursed/damned to hell while promoting a false gospel.

The headpieces of the pope & bishops resembles a fish head which represents the god Dagon and the pope also wear a crown resembling a pine cone. If you add anything to the plan of salvation, salvation is not possible. You must put your trust in Christ, and Christ alone in order to be saved. He paid for your sins in full. You owe nothing. Catholics will pay for some of their sins in purgatory. This makes themselves co-redeemer with Christ. They actually call Mary the co-redemptrix. They trust in Mary for part of their salvation. They trust in "the keys of heaven" that are given to the Pope. And this is just the tip of a massive iceberg. It doesn't matter of your view of Christ is correct if you get EVERYTHING else wrong.

@Timothy Lane: None of that is correct; you didn’t state a single fact about the Catholic Church - but I’m not upset with you. There are many misconceptions promulgated about the Catholic Church and I’ve heard ALL of them. I can’t blame you if all you’ve ever heard is misinformation so let’s clear things up. Firstly, we Catholics believe we are saved by grace alone. Faith and works - not works of the law - are responses to Christ’s grace. We believe Jesus is the only way to heaven (John 14:6, Acts 4:12) and He is truly God and truly man. Why don’t you rely on Catholic sources and find out what we really teach? You might be surprised! We do not worship Mary, we do not worship statues, and we do not believe in replacement theology. We worship God - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - alone and we reject all forms of idolatry. God never said not to make religious art; He said not to worship such things. For example, God commanded the construction of the Ark of the Covenant. It was not worshiped. Our Lord can’t break His own commandment! We take John 6 and 1 Corinthians 11:24-27 literally: The Real Presence! You should too. Jesus had to restate this teaching several times in John 6 and even so some of His disciples deserted Him. Don’t be one of those former disciples.

Can you explain the massive disparity between what the church claims to teach and what the laity actually believes?

@Timothy: I can try! First, are the Catholics you meet ones who rarely - or never - go to Mass, dissidents to the faith, or ones like me who go to Mass at least once per week and study the daily Mass Bible readings during the week whether we go or not? The first two groups I mentioned, those who rarely attend Mass and the dissidents, are respectively uninformed and misinformed. Those of us who go at least weekly are those who can defend the faith well. Now, to your question, the Church teaching hasn’t changed in ~2000 years. However, some teachers are better than others and this extends to modern priests and bishops. In my case I’ve been spoiled rotten by superb catechesis - teaching - by some outstanding priests. These men are Bible experts. Also, it takes much study away from Mass to learn the entirely of the faith; covering two millennia of salvation history isn’t easy. There are many outstanding Catholic teachers on KZbin and I recommend Scott Hahn, Steve Ray, Marcus Grodi, Fr. Mitch Pacwa, Fr. Mark Goring, and the late Archbishop Fulton Sheen.

Two who believe everything (including Atheists will be in Heaven) went to mass regularly. And one who believes nothing at all went to mass regularly (he was Italian, it's just what they do). I had long term conversations with all of these. Two from the first group converted to Protestantism. And the one who believes nothing from the RCC is also a protestant now. I have talked to several who would fall into your "dissident" category. But those conversations don't usually last very long. So I can't recall how many there have been. The standard evangelical definition of a cult is, "Any religious group that claims to be Christian, yet denies one or more of the essential doctrines thereof." I feel like most Christians would agree that the doctrine of Justification by Faith Alone is about as essential as it gets and Catholicism vehemently denies that. So on that basis alone, wouldn't we be correct in calling Roman Catholicism a cult? Another mark of a cult is that they add something to the Bible. In some cases it's entirely extra books like the Book of Mormon, or in other cases it's the supposed "infallible" interpretations of the Bible like what's claimed for the Watchtower magazines by Jehovah's Witnesses. But in Catholicism, they have added both. They added uninspired books to the Old Testament called the apocrypha and they've added their own supposed infallible traditions as well. All of which are said to be equal in authority as Scripture and in actual practice, end up trumping Scripture. (For proof: anytime you find a verse in the Bible that contradicts what Catholic Tradition says, the Tradition wins) Yet a third mark of a cult is that there's almost always some supreme leader that exercises complete authority over the doctrine and practice of the entire Church and can make absolutely-binding alterations as needed/desired. Mormons have their "Living Prophet", JW's have their current "Governing Body", etc. Obviously Catholics have this type of person too, whom they refer to as the Pope. Fourth, almost every cult will try to step in between you and Jesus in some way. In other words, they'll say something to the effect of, "You can't just go off and have your own relationship with God- you have to go through us first." And the Catholic Church has literally made a career saying that. If you want Christ in Catholicism, you have to attend Mass and you can't get Mass anywhere else. And finally, related to the second point, most cults will subtly (or sometimes not so subtly) discourage their members from reading the Bible independently. Catholic websites to this day will still sometimes talk about how dangerous it is for Catholics to attend Protestant Bible study groups or any other group that encourages them to read the Bible by themselves. Consequently, nearly every Catholic I've ever met has been woefully ignorant of the Bible. And I'm not just talking about Protestant convictions- I'm talking about basic stories. Eg. Moses, Noah, Joshua, etc. And it's not surprising. They're told they can't understand the Bible on their own, so why would they read it on their own? A huge mark of a cult. I think the only reason Catholicism gets a "pass" here is because they believe in the Trinity and they've been around a lot longer than the others. But in my opinion, that's not enough to avoid earning the title, "cult". We should call a spade a spade. An old cult is still a cult, even if a billion people follow it. Cheers.
@TheFreedomDefender
@TheFreedomDefender 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with you wholeheartedly though I'm careful about calling it a cult because a cult is a cult from its very inception. Roman Catholicism for me isn't a cult person as much as it is an apostate church practicing an apostate Christianity. At one time the church at Rome was orthodox, but thats hundreds of years ago now. When a church that was once solid goes apostate there will still be lingering elements of orthodoxy which accounts for all of the things that are biblically true in the RCC. But for everything the RCC teaches that is biblical now they have some other doctrine that contradicts, and even blasphemes that doctrinal stance.

@@ravikeller9626 its a hard stance to take. One of the reasons why I'm careful to not call it a cult because I do believe there are possibly hundreds of genuine born again believers who identify as catholic, but are nominal catholics at best. They are in most cases ignorant of what official catholic doctrine is on things, or will just say they don't believe tge things that are blatantly heretical and unbiblical. At that point its better to steer the conversation to the anathemas of the church versus the anathema of scripture and call them to come out of that system. The catholic church is a very ripe harvest field, believers just have to first recognize that and abandon this mere Christianity ecumenism.

@Felix Charles: There is nowhere in the entire eighth chapter of St. John’s gospel where Mary is mentioned. I have no idea what you’re talking about. There is nothing in all of Sacred Scripture indicating Mary threw anything at anyone. God made Adam and Eve without original sin, right? They contracted that condition in the garden by means of disobedience. To give birth to sinless Jesus, Mary also had to be free of original sin so she was saved from original sin at the moment of her conception; she even rejoices over this in Luke 1:46-48. All of Our Lord’s humanity came from Mary. Think about that for a minute. She conceived by the power of the spirit but all of His human substance came from her. The Angel Gabriel said, "Hail Mary, full of Grace." If you are full of something (grace) their is no room for anything else. Mary is not worshiped, she is adored. Almost all Protestant Church fathers believed in her perpetual virginity(Calvin wouldn't take a clear stance), even Martin Luther himself. What were some of Christ's last words as he gave up his spirit. "Behold, your mother." Why would he say this if it wasn't important?? She is the new Eve, our Spiritual Mother. Has anyone looked into 10,000 people witnessing the Miracles at Fatima as the Sun danced? Revelation...the woman clothed in the Sun. As Eve was taken from Adam and brought sin into the world...Christ was taken from Mary to defeat it. Everything she did and said was in perfect obedience to God The Father. What a perfect role model. Christ performed his first miracle at Her request, even though "his time had not yet come." Praying for the dead? Read Maccabbes But in all sincerity, there is way too much division and misunderstanding between Catholics and Protestants. Never, I believe, has there been a more important time for CHRISTIANS, of all denominations to be United as the Body of Christ. Some of the strongest Christians I know are Protestant and there is much to gain from one another. Good works are not the root of salvation, but they are the necessary fruit, and where good works are absent, such a person is not saved. The Bible is absolutely clear that we have been saved unto good works. I have other disagreements with the Catholic church. I don’t believe Allan made a good account of the Catholic objection to sola scriptura. They will tell you that someone had to compile the canon of the Bible in the first place and that was the Church and the church fathers. Therefore, the person who says “I justify my beliefs by scripture alone” has actually already conceded that sola scriptura is contradictory. If you accept the canonized Bible, then you accept the authority of the word of the church fathers apart from the direct word of the Bible. Nowhere in scripture does it say which books are to be canonized and our understanding of scripture itself is relegated to the canon. This is a knockdown argument for strict sola scriptura as far as I can tell, and so I prefer “Prima Scriptura”, which is to say “scripture first”. Scripture is the PRIME authority, before all others.

K what other authorities are there? Scripture itself is from God. No one is obeying authors in the Bible, we obey the Holy Spirit. Since God doesn't change, His word doesn't change either. The instruction to not add to or subtract from The Word is also established in the Bible.

If we believe that the Holy scripture is inspired and God breathed, it has no other source but God. Just because the Catholic church helped to compile it does not mean that they are source of the canon. These books were already recognized as holy scripture even before they were compiled by the RCC.
@brando3342
@brando3342 2 жыл бұрын
@@User_Happy35 Yes, but I think you’re not appreciating the point. The New Testament was not recognized as a specific set of books before the church compiled them and part of sola scriptura is that one cannot go outside the canon specified. The Jews had the Tenach, but it was not combined with the New Testament books and letters until the church did so. If we say that the Holy Spirit guided the writing of the scripture and that’s why we follow it, that same logic has to be applied to those who compiled the books, that they were also lead by the Holy Spirit to do so. That’s just being consistent. If we do that, then we are back to square one of my argument, because scripture doesn’t specify any specific person being led by the Holy Spirit to compile any specific books.

Because this really happened. Let me present you with a scenario. A man came stumbling into a village. Broken, bleeding and near the end of his life. Please save us he declared. Remarking on a nearby battle. Bloody and cruel. Nobody put themselves aside to help. Nobody believed in getting involved. Aside from the Catholic Knights who attended to his care and massed themselves before charging into that fight. They defeated that adversary. People who were raping and brutalizing unarmed people. With no regard to their own safety. Faith. Without action. Means nothing. They said. All those centuries later. Lets just say that there a group of people still out there who remember those times. You think them Christians? Perhaps Pagans or Atheists? No. They would be Muslims. Later, people who would become better known in the days of Colonel Lawrence and the modern era. Yet for what wasn't much shy of thousands of years. They remembered. Is it Godly to run your mouth. To criticize. Or is it that some in the world must raise their banners. And when they fight. They remember all those they cared for, spent time with and died beside. They call them Traditions. Our Catholic friends have many. None of which are anything the Protestants claim them to be. Sad no? That Christians biggest enemy is their own civil war. Something that had both camps killing each other like animals. Pathetic. But that is all Christians and their religion are now. A pitiful broken shell of a noble group that was. Oh and to be clear, whilst I am not Christian - I am a student of history to a point. Mainly major battles and engagements. So if you are going to pull the 'what the crusaders did' line; I know. I know what was done right and what was wrong. Saladin knew and respected the good. Even when he didn't agree with the beliefs themselves. So I am aware that many who called themselves christian commited crimes and let the side down. That was the nature of the world back then. No modern tools. No phones and easy life. But they weren't Christian. Thats why the oft called them heretics. Everyone is smart enough to understand that not every police officer is corrupt. Some are very good and care a lot about true belief. So did many Knights. And they protected Christendom for over a thousand years, whilst everyone else did nothing. Try and remember that. Your do nothing Protestantism is a hilarious joke if you think yourselves fit to criticize them.

Even more ironically it was in large part due to something pastor John McCarther said in an interview where he said basically that the Church had the Eucharist wrong since the first century. I had to really sit and ponder that. Am I to believe that Jesus died and was brought to glory by the Father only to have his beloved church fall into error barely a generation removed from the Him and the Apostles? It was just misinterpreted "Many will say to me Lord, Lord...depart from Me you WORKERS of iniquity" Both are needed: "Faith without works is dead" and "our righteouness is filthy rags". @@user-lh5li8ll7i Still, we need to be consistent with scripture. Romans clearly teaching "Salvation is by faith, not by works". Then James comes and he will not contradict Paul, even more, he complements Paul's view. You can actually never have works if you never had faith. Works is the natural response and immediate evidence that one has been born again. So, of course, just like James says, how can you say to someone that they have works but not faith, or vice-versa? But the only originator of salvation is faith, just like Paul says. Works is the fruit of salvation, not the cause of salvation. If I see the fruit in you, I can conclude you have salvation, but I know the fruit is not the origin of the tree, by the fruits I know that the tree is alive.

@Bible scanned. No corrupted books. I didnt say it was 50/50, actually the opposite. I said grace can't be earned and it is a free gift. Just to be clear, when you say we just have to believe in Jesus, then that obviously means His words. And He repeatedly tells us He will judge us by our works, for example: "I was hungry and you fed me, naked and you clothed me..." And as St.James put it: "True religion in the eyes of God is looking after widows and orphans" This is not trusting works to save you, your works are your faith. For example, the old saying: "Actions speak louder than words". Only Jesus can save us but how else can you show Him your faith but through your response and obedience to His words and example? Thats why I said, it is not simply intellectual belief that the Bible talks about when it talks of faith.

"Deny yourself and take up your cross..." "I was hungry and you fed me..." "If you say: Go in peace stay warm and well fed..." The Good Samaritan The Parable of the Two Sons All these things require action on our behalf. Now if you dont do these things but say you have faith, do you really? Surely you would do them if you did. As I said in another post, faith in Jesus is not believing He is God, the devil knows that and he's in hell, it's living and acting in accordance with His words because that is the only way to actually prove your faith. As you said, it is shown by fruits. This doesnt mean you are saving yourself through works it is showing that you believe in what Jesus said. It is only Jesus that can save us but through our actions we show Him our faith. These works are obedience to Christ's commands so they are by definition faith in Him and not apart from Him.

The problem is that unlike Protestants we don't take prayer as a synonym for worship, in fact prayer is not always synonymous with worship for the mere reason that praying is to *ask.* In french we can say "Je te prie/ I pray you" which can be translated as I'm asking you. Contrary to what Della Swanson above said, when I pray to an angel like my guardian angel I'm asking him to pray for me. It would be weird to see that I'm worshiping him just by the fact that I'm doing this but when someone says to his friend "pray for me", no one will complain saying that he is in reality worshipping his friend. Some good examples to illustrate this are the Hail Mary _"Hail Mary..._ _pray for us sinners..."_ or the Litany Of The Saints ( Litaniae Sanctorum ) in Gregorian chant on KZbin which is essentially just that : praying the saints in heaven by asking them to "pray for us" ( _"ora pro nobis"_ ). I don't see where the idolatry is in all of this. I'm not gonna do all the blabla, like many catholics I suggest you to check the channel "The Counsel of Trent", he made two videos about this subject named "Does praying to saints make them gods" or "Do saints in heaven hear our prayer". St Thomas Aquinas also made an article in his Summa theologica : Question 72. Prayers with regard to the saints in heaven where he answers with objections + answer. It is available on the website "New Advent". There's finally Joe Heschmeyer ( who has his apologetic blog "Shameless Popery" ) who recently made a video on the channel Catholic Answer named "The Jewish root of praying for the dead". Have a nice day.

In order to understand the Papacy, it is important to understand it in the context of the Davidic Kingdom, as Jesus, as the Son of David, establishes His Church in accordance with the Davidic Kingdom. In 1 Kings 4:7, King Solomon had 12 officers to rule over Israel. Jesus had 12 Apostles which were picked by him to rule over His Church after He ascended into heaven. The Davidic Kingdom also had a prime minister who had the absolute authority of the King. In Isaiah 22:15-24 God is angry with his prime minister Shebna, and will replace him with Eliakim, who will be given the keys to the Kingdom, and will have the power to open and shut, who will be a father figure to his people, and who will be a sure peg on a throne of honor to his father. The whole weight of his father’s house shall rest on him. Jesus gave Peter the keys to the Kingdom of God (Mathew 16:18-19), a symbol of authority prefigured by Eliakim in the OT. Peter and his successors have the power to bind and loose (open and shut) in the name of Jesus, from Matthew 18:18. The entire weight of the Catholic Church rests on the Pope and his teachings, just like the entire weight of David's house rested on Eliakim. There Mike, you have the Papacy by using the scriptures alone.

The New Testament was a guide to follow what Jesus taught but it was not complete or even pertinent to what our society is allowing today. We need to be constantly reminded that the world is not our friend but we can function within it as long as we do not adapt too much of the cultural noise that has been creeping into the churches. So, please, let me know what you think is cult about praising the Saints for their examples, and Mary for her dedication to being the Mother of God. @@IvanAlvarezCPACMA showing reverence for Mary or the Saints because they dedicated their life to Jesus and the church is not heretical and bowing to statues does not commit you to worship them any more than be bowing or even kneeling when you enter a church is little more than showing respect. There are things that are being done that are not necessarily what Jesus taught but they can go any time without changing the love for God and Jesus. I was reluctant to even go into a Catbolic Church because of a lot of propaganda and the s.ex scandals have been very trying and resulted in many people leaving the church. But it's like the parable of the man who a plants weeds in the field at night and the farmer said not to pick them out of fear of killing the good plants. That is what the church faces today even though there are many who should be and hopefully will be removed from their duties. These are challenging times and need the support of all who follow Jesus. Not a time to be running away.

I find Catholicism and Judaism actually have a whole lot in common (except of course theology). I love both groups, and consider both as being the people of God (Jews are the nation of God, and Catholics are part of the Church of God). But they are both heavily driven by dogmatic propaganda that is composed of thousands of years of traditions that is rooted off of somebody's interpretation of scripture, rather than what scripture actually says. Both groups encourage the reading of scripture, but discourage the individual interpretation of scripture. Rather, you must solely rely on what your rabbi/priest tells you the scripture means. And most of the time, the rabbi's/priest's interpretation of the passage is to confirm a preconceived theological position, which the passage may actually contradict. (Protestants can have a tendency to do this too.) Both groups have an oral tradition which is said to be of equal authority to the scriptures, but actually gets treated with more authority than the scriptures. For the Jews that's the Oral Torah; I forget what the Catholics call theirs (something to do with the authority of the church/papestry). Both groups are more studied in history/other writings than scripture. Talmudic Judaism is named after their intense study of the Talmud, which is a commentary of the Mishna, which is a commentary (sort of) of the scriptures. The Jews also have many other writings. The Catholics have the church fathers, whom they study extensively. Study is always good, and I enjoy extra biblical sources, but we need to be careful not to let those extra biblical sources take priority over the biblical sources, which tends to happen. Both groups are heavily lead by tradition which has been developed over time. Of course, tradition is a good thing, but tradition is meant to preserve culture not establish theology; when it gets in the way of the Word of God, then it becomes problematic. This is what Jesus Himself warned about in Mark 7:6-13. P.S. An example of Jews in tradition would be the interpretation of Exodus 23:19b, where the Jews are commanded not to cook a calf/young goat in the milk of its mother. From this short passage, Jews have interpreted that you cannot have meat and dairy together. Nor can they be on the same dish. Rather, you must have two separate sets of dishes: one for eating meals with meat, and the other for eating meals with dairy. The meat dishes can never have dairy touch them, or they become unkosher, nor can the dairy dishes have meat touch them. You also cannot eat/drink dairy for 6 hours after eating meat, nor eat meat for 6 hours after having dairy. All these traditions of man taken from "Do not cook a young goat/calf in its mother's milk." On the flip side, a good means of using this tradition is how the Jews have added to the kosher laws from being the kind of animal that can be eaten, to include restrictions on the kind of killing the animal undergoes. Thus, the Jews have been able to refrain a kosher label on cruel killings of animals, and thus practice the most humane and pain-free methods of slaughtering animals for food. The ultimate point is that tradition can be used for good, or it can be dogmatic and overboard.

The question is whether your salvation is based on Christ or being obedient to a church. Catholics weasel on this by saying "well, the Church gets its authority from Christ so it's the same thing." I think I have to disagree, Roman Catholicism is a cult. 1. They insist on a form of the eternal sonship of Christ. In their view, Jesus will continue to view not only God as Father, but also Mary as Mother. While this was true while Christ was on Earth, it is not true eternally. This is a rejection of the proper trinity in which Christ, as the Word, is coequal to God and the Holy Spirit in all things. It also makes him lower than Mary, who is not the spiritual mother of the Word, only the mother of Jesus on Earth. That’s a great and honorable thing, but she is not an eternal mother. 2. They deny Christ’s singular role as our divine mediator and intercessor. They pray to Mary, explicitly committing the salvation of their souls to her, so that she will intercede with Christ on our behalf. The belief that there is anyone but Christ that has the capacity to save our immortal souls is a grave heresy. 3. They claim that men, their clergy specifically, are the only men capable of forgiving sins in Christ’s name. Therefore rendering the Roman Catholic Church the only path to our Father according to their theology and rejecting the royal priesthood to which we all belong that allows us to appeal directly to Christ for our repentance. Yet it was Jesus who said that the only way to the Father was through Himself. Any organization that would subvert this core principle of salvation is committing heresy of the highest order. It is salvation on the line. 4. They teach salvation by works. They add a myriad of works to the grace of Christ. This is a total rejection of the crucifixion, for if one adds works, it is no longer by grace. Since grace is only granted through Christ’s atonement on our behalf, to say it is not enough is to reject it completely. Paul is clear that there is no in-between when it comes to work and grace. By teaching works, they not only reject Christ’s work, but teach other’s to do so as well. This is the same heresy that Mormonism and Jehovah’s Witnesses preach and we call them cults. Roman Catholicism should be treated no differently. I have made a case that Roman Catholicism has rejected the triune Godhead (adding Mary and/or by reducing Christ’s authority). They reject salvation by grace alone through the addition of works. I see nothing that keeps them from being called a cult. They claim Christ in word, but reject him in spirit. We need outreach and aid for these deceived children of God. They need our help.

That's not true. At all. Where did you get your information?

@@dominikdurkovsky8318 From your own teachers. Read the prayer called “mother of perpetual help.” That is a prayer in which the one praying states verbatim “I commit to you my soul” and it is directed to Mary. That is a clearly blasphemous prayer.

 @snappyjo4642 *Bible and real history did not say "Roman Church = Christ's Church or the Universal Church". You are just regurgitating the self claims of Roman ct. So where is your proof that it was so?? Still waiting ...* you said yes the Catholic/Universal Church is and was and will always be the universal Church as you said.

That’s not how Catholicism works (no pun intended). We don’t believe God has a hidden checklist that we have to complete in order to make it to heaven. We are initially justified in baptism, a grace which no one could merit. Then we obey the Lord, maintaining our relationship with Him. This includes doing works of charity and mercy, since He commands us to do them. If we commit a grave sin (including sins of omission) after our initial justification, then we must repent and confess those sins. Rinse and repeat.
