You can also ask for a private screening. We did this because we had two cats and were terrified they’d escape when we took them out of their carriers. The screening room didn’t have a ceiling but we felt more secure that way.

I had to fly my mom's cat from Minnesota to Florida last week and this video was helpful! Muffin did great through everything. Honestly I'm just so impressed with how resilient she is for a little cat! Anyway, the one thing I was most worried about was security. It was super loud with tons of people at the Minneapolis Airport but they did allow us to go to a private room. In the end I probably didn't need to bother with that because again, the cat was a champ but I wanted to be careful.

Everyone was so pissed around me and I was just crying out of frustrating… I tried medicine from the vet, calming spray and even had her favorite treats…. This is an excellent and the most informative video I have found yet on pet travel by air. I was just curious about the harness you mention for security. Did it have any metal parts, and is that something that wouldn't be permitted through the scanning process? The security part is the part of this undertaking that I am most stressed about. My cats actually don't like being carried so this could be potentially a risk for them getting away! I am trying to handle them more and also will take longer trips to practice them getting used to that and their carrier, but the security is not something I'll be able to practice for prior. So again, thank you so much for all your amazing tips!

I think it’s the same as for humans.. The first time you fly you also don’t know about swallowing or drinking water to equalize your ear pressure. It’s just uncomfortable, not deadly or so.

I suppose if you are a super nice person you could bring allergy medicine! But in all seriousness the air scrubbers in planes are designed to deal with allergens and other toxins pretty efficiently. If you are sitting directly next to someone with an allergy then a flight attendant would have them switch seats with another passenger to put them further away from the animal. I believe Delta was 125 each way for the cat. Also you might want to consider getting a points credit card such as American Express Platinum. It's expensive but you get a 200 airline credit and automatic status updates on Delta frequent flyer programs so you can offset quite a bit of the annual fee and reduce other fees like checked bag fees (we get 3 free checked bags). We definitely recommend considering the medication as it really helps our kitty sleep during the flight. I’m betting as long as you stay close he/she will be fine but we recommend keeping the cat carrier in your house for a few weeks open so the cat can explore and make it feel like home long before travel day. That seems to help a lot and during travel day now we can barely get Sake to even come out of the carrier. The hardest part is usually the security checkpoint where you need to take the kitty out of the carrier but I’m sure you will be fine, just plan and give yourself some extra time! Start them young if you can. Flying the friendly skies is not a big deal for my 2 Siamese. We often are asked for photo ops from people as many are amazed at how well behaved they are. The more you take them for rides in your car (pleasant rides that don't always end up to the vet) -the more they are used to bumps in the road, people, noises all coming at them, etc. I call my cats "frequent fliers!" They amaze me at how calm they are and we've never had any medication for them. But they started when they were six months old, flying with me. They get use to it and we have a system down pack. I LOVE flying with my cats. I think it's actually relaxing for ME. :D

I have a question: My cat is 18" long but the airline requires a carry on bag that's 16" or less. Can an 18" cat fit in a carrier a couple of inches shorter (i.e. curl up?) I think it would be a tight fit but if I get one of those expandable ones, I think she'd be okay. I'm not happy about the idea of checking her in baggage. She doesn't even like going outside my apartment and is very timid. Any tips would be helpful.
