Funny cat names = more attention = better chance of adoption! There's also people who their full-time job is pet rescue, and there's only so many black-and-white cats you can name Oreo before going nuts. Trust me. Our little kitty was named Shaggy since he was found in a litter of five that the rescuers named after the Scooby Doo gang and he has these cute little ear fluffs that give him permanent bedhead.

Yeah, I've also heard that shelters start giving them wacky names after a while because they run out of normal names/get bored. For example, Tara from "WTFIWWY?" has two cats she rescued from a shelter...now named "Peggy" and "Dottie", but they were ORIGINALLY "Kiosk" and "Wa-Wa". Because of where they were found. "Pavement" sounds like another "where the cat was when I first saw it" name, too.

I agree, if you're a potential adopter in an area with lots of shelters, your attention is probably gonna be drawn to the ones with crazy names first! At least, my attention would be. You can rename after adoption (especially with cats anyway) and it lets the rescuers have a bit of fun. There's also just something hilarious about animals being called the dumbest things.

I once heard somewhere that animal rescues sometimes give their cats unusual names so that the volunteers that work with said cats don’t get super attached, as the end goal is to get them adopted out to someone who will give them a new name. However, sometimes this doesn’t stop people from falling in love and that’s how people end up with cats named “Bongwater Pelican” or something.

These arent people who gave their pets names and you cant list your cat on here. These are rescues posting adoptables. The odd cat names serve two purpose; one is that when a cat sees a vet it has to be registered with a name on its medical files and sometimes if its an emergency its name is whatever the rescuer comes up with at that moment, and the other is because odd names get attention and increase chances of adoption.
