Hey everyone welcome back to my KZbin channel, it's me Jose Carlos and in this video we will take a look at some of my recent Orchid rescues and we will observe the status of their "Revival". These are orchids that have survived having no leaves or roots, balancing between life & death. These are the lucky ones.
I essentially potted these babies and let them do their thing by setting them somewhere I could keep a close eye on them.
During this time, since they had no root system, I kept them dry and only started watering once I saw new growths with small roots.
I did this as they had no root system and I really did not want to risk rotting the rest of the plants. (Eapecially during the winter)

I just found your KZbin channel because of orchid diva! I love orchids so I'm so glad to find another Channel where I can get some great information. She said you're affiliated with Sunset Valley orchids so no I have a great place to buy orchids. The only place I've been able to buy them has been the supermarket Lowe's and Home Depot aisle and I think about one at Walmart but all mine are phalaenopsis! I'd like to have some other varieties. I'm having great success with my phalaenopsis for the first time ever I'm 70 years old love house plans love gardening but always failed at the Orchid level! But thanks to the great KZbin stations since November I've kept almost every Orchid alive that I bought and I have over 30. Somewhere not in the best of health when I bought them so I'm not feeling too bad about them but I did try. Thank you so much for all the effort you go to to put these great videos on KZbin..... Ps I am also trying to enter the contest she's having for two orchids but that's not why I'm subscribing to your station or at least it's not the main reason! I have to be subscribed to your station to get a chance to enter into the contest but I know my chances of winning are very slim becoming a subscriber of your station because I want to learn more about orchids. And sounds like as I watch just a few minutes of this video you haven't been on KZbin I guess you've been pretty busy. Maybe today I will get a chance to watch all your other videos I'll have it KZbin marathon on your Channel take care of my new friend

I never cease to be amazed when an orchid (other than a Catasetum) regenerates from a single PB. Rescuing orchids definitely isn't for the faint of heart.

Hey Jose. Nice to see you back, definitely need to see more of your work amigo. At which point did you resume watering, or not as the case may be. I am always trying to save rootless plants of all genera. I’m never without a ‘sick bay’. Usually I put them in a plastic bottle with moist sphagnum to try and give humidity as I live in a dry climate. Some live some die.

Hey Lynn! I started watering once the new growths had emerging roots that could take the water in. These plants had zero roots so I just put them in bark for the time being. I also put some in sphagnum moss, although these shown here are just in bark. Me too, I’m an avid orchid rescuer! Lol

Chuntie thank you so much for your kind words! I started watering these plants once they began to root from their new growths. At that point, the orchid would actually be able to take in the water I gave it :D before, they were just lone bulbs on a rhyzome with no roots

Where did you get these neglected plants?

Thanks for the info. I'm curious when you should remove the yellow stems. Are they still actively feeding the new plant or helping them to stay upright? Love the content, you taught me several things.🌺

Pamela Lueschen you’re welcome! Sometimes when orchids aren’t happy, their bulbs turn yellow and sometimes they loose leaves and roots. Usually I cut the yellow back bulbs off when I am repotting an orchid to a different size pot whether it’s big or small. I typically do this because they’re not exactly doing the orchid any good, especially if you have green healthy front bulbs. In the case of my plants shown here, I have decided to take some of those very poor bulbs and try to rescue them. I did this only because they were “select” plants or plants with awards. I am sad to say, but if these were regular cattleyas I would have just cut these back bulbs off, thrown them away, and kept the healthy part of the plant. I hope that helps!

do you give them any water if so when do you do it
@TheOrchidGeek
@TheOrchidGeek 5 жыл бұрын
Sue Wright At first no because they didn’t have any roots and I didn’t want to risk rotting the bulbs. I began watering once they had new roots emerging from their new growths. At that point the orchid roots could take in the water I was giving them.

Congrats on the rescues! So happy you shared this with us. As always your videos are worth waiting for. QQ- did I hear you correctly that you don’t water at all when you have no roots? Just pot them and forget them? curious how they can create new roots and growths with no moisture . I am a novice so forgive me if this is question is seems weird. Thank you .
@TheOrchidGeek
@TheOrchidGeek 5 жыл бұрын
Its not weird at all! You did hear me correctly, I just set these aside and let them do their thing. Once I noticed new growths emerging along with new roots, I began to water them. Its not my only rescue method though, I also put some rescues inside little bags filled with some damp sphagnum moss. I rescued several C. walkerianas using the plastic bag with moss method.

I think you have a rename happening... but I could be wrong... ... the Slc. Fire Fantasy looks to be just a Cat. Fire Fantasy now, which would mean that... ... Slc. Angel Heart x Slc. Fire Fantasy is called Laeliocattleya Angel's Blush F.Clarke 2016 - registered (RHS) - Laeliocattleya Angel Heart (1988) × Cattleya Fire Fantasy (1999) www.orchidroots.com/orchid/100994289/hybrid_detail/?tab=sum ... I know... the reclassifying does my head in as well.

J. Donoghue Yeah it does my head in too! I’ve been telling myself that I’m going to be changing the nomenclature of orchids in my collection, but there’s so many plants! It would make a great summer project to do so though :D one of these days... lol Thanks a lot!

@@TheOrchidGeek I have a spreadsheet which tracks every plant I have bought [and killed], so when a name is changed, the old name is placed in the list of synonyms and the new name inserted... takes a few minutes at most, as I don't have to change anything else about it.
