Hi Roger! Looks like you won the lotto on those two! Vigor, scent and lovely blooms! Can't wait til next year to see how big that first one gets ... I know.... patience and restraint. Kelly

@@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai I was enamored by a bloom of a paphiopedilum last spring at an orchid show, I know better, but "pretty flower must have" took hold of me. Upon inspection at home I found orange rust growing amok under the leaves. I think I have it licked as the new growth appears clean. These darn orchids have such power over us!

They do in Thailand this way because easy to find and retain moist so long

Those are beautiful Cattleyas! The flower colour combination and contrast particularly caught my eye. Really envious of your holey clay pots. Still not being sold commercially in U.K., except very expensive individual potters hand made ones! Interesting (for me) the small Cattleya I bought at the BOS 60th anniversary show from the sellers from the Far East was also packed with pieces of coconut husk when I repotted it .

The first lot of pots came from a garden centre in Ireland (via Rachel) and since then, two viewers have sent me some - one lot that weren't being used and a second lot as a gift from the States.

Roger, I don’t know if you will get this message on an old video but I’ve been going back through your playlists to get information about what to do about some of my plants, and I’m interested in if you still have these plants and how are they now after you predicted their growth patterns. It might be interesting hearing your thoughts. And it might make more content you can link to these playlists from your new grows pace. Best, Becky

Re-loading an old video is easy enough but picking bits out of old videos to far too much work - each whole video would have to be downloaded, then they would all have to be edited to get the parts I want, and then all those pieces would have to be joined together.

With the Laelia hybrid, rubescens is found in areas that are seasonally dry in winter. Broughtonia negrilensis will be much drier in winter although they do still get some rain. Hard to say with the cross of the two, but you may end up having to treat it more like a winter rest Dendrobium, allowing it to get quite dry with minimal water during the winter.

Could your beautiful cattleya be either Rhyncattleanthe Guanmiau City 'Black Flower' or a Rhyncholaeliocattleya Amy Wakasugi 'Yamanashi'? Either way it absolutely stunning.
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai5 жыл бұрын
Could be - but it's almost impossible to get a positive ID on Cattleya type hybrids as there are so many that are very similar.
@TheDanEdwards5 жыл бұрын
Your Laelia rubescens hybrid other parent is probably Broughtonia negrilensis, not a Brassavola. If so it was registered a few years ago as Laelonia Joyce Hylton. Note the outer portion of the lip looks like the Broughtonia, but the rest of the flower and plant strongly resembles the Laelia. Your description of the pseudobulbs is characteristic of L. rubescens. The somewhat stout oval shape which is also squashed creating edges on the pb. is typical of this subgroup of Laelis (which includes anceps and some of the species formerly known as Schomburgkia.) As I'm sure you noticed, the pseudobulbs look like they are trying to lie down. Mine did that too when in a pot, and when I sent it on to a friend she mounted it and the plant responded well. I think most people recommend mounting it (and this will be true of the Broughtonia parent also.) It wants to grow upwards along a tree (or even cactus) branch. But as you noted in this series, as you're doing the videos for beginners then putting it in a pot may be more informative for the newcomer to growing orchids. Well known breeder (of years ago) W. Moir was a champion of using L. rubescens for hybridizing, and he also like the Broughtons. He was ahead of his time though. Your plant is a good example that he was on to something.

@annareiter9525 жыл бұрын
My advice ... check out your only two catts which bloomed and were bought in a super market. Very strange that the blooms loocked almost the same. How funny! Rogers two catts have absolutely nothing to do with any catts you "normally" can get.
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai5 жыл бұрын
I know Margaret had some fun getting some out of this type of 'pot'. If they are rotten, they come apart easily but by then most of the roots are lost. If they are still hard, then the roots stick are are damaged getting them out. Difficult to deal with.
@YnseSchaap5 жыл бұрын
@@annareiter952 I bought them because they had them, it's always phaleanopsis and come Christmas the occasional nobilé so it was a no brainer, I don't think Roger can buy anything without giving it a 20 years experience look (I think it's the same when I look at a piece of rock, I look at it with 25 years of climbing behind me and decisions are made in a split second, it's a feeling)

And ...this is for beginners for Catts? Are you serious? You bought them in person at the Welsh Orchid Festival. These are big beautifil already mature plants, which are definetely not available somewhere else. How much did you pay for them taking into account that you are a good dealmaker and familiar with the sellers? These plants are normally not availabe for beginners. And now you are going to tell all your audience to change abruptely to re-pot and change 'a winning system' which made them growing and bloom? Did I miss someting that for example only new growth will eventually produce flowers? Wonder which species will be next
