Yeah as soon as I heard that first crack of thunder you’d have seen an old fat man break the land speed record. Lesson learned; know where you’re at, be aware of the weather and have an exit plan. You’re a good man John. Thanks for posting.

John is a good human! Always a bummer when weather takes an unpredictable turn for the worse like that. Crazy that skies were so blue in your initial scene driving in. We had a similar experience on a summit the other day- storms were predicted for late afternoon, but we thought we were being "safe" by leaving the summit a full 45 minutes before our turn around time, and what do ya know, we still got hail and lightning storms on the way down. Glad you got out of there safely!

Saw that video. You two are maniacs. Not sure if I said it before, but look into Buckskin Gulch. For your experience levels, maybe in Wire Pass & out the Paria at Lee's Ferry. It's 40+ miles and amazing scenery.

It's the monsoon season, always a Thunder shower. I see you went with the Altra hiking shoes, I bought a pair but haven't used them yet, still using the Solomon's...

Love the Altra's....but they're already falling apart with only maybe 100 miles on them. Not sure what I'm going to do about that. Keep returning them at REI until the warranty runs out?

They come up fast up on the rim. And sometimes pretty fierce. This is (unfortunately) not the only time I've been caught in a thunderstorm up there.

Wettest July on record for a lot of places this year. A few weeks ago went camping at Red Rock Crossing luckily the thunderstorms was north of us. But man did that thunder we did hear was scary. Especially around 10pm with isolated cells around us.

We just camped up there and had a similar experience, however it was in the middle of the night! Pretty freaking nerve rattling hearing those booms; my wife said on more than one occasion, I'm getting in the truck! Luckily we survived, although got very little sleep. Great video, keep the coming!

Yeah, those storms come in fast up there. My wife and I got caught in a thunderstorm right on the rim a couple years ago too. Scary. Glad you guys were ok. And glad you like the videos.

I know because i've been monitoring Houston Bros everyday for weeks now waiting for a dry enough run down it on my bike for my channel. I live in Florida, lightning capital of USA. Having been soaked to my underwear hiking out in these parts many a times, here are my thoughts on the whole lightning thing. Lightning is normally found on the leading or trail edges of the storm system and can hit up to 30 miles away from the center of the storm. This means in trying to outrun it, you actually put yourself in more danger of being hit by it than hunkering down. Problem with the latter is you get wet and then risk trailing edge of storm and lightning strikes. If your life is not in immediate peril and you know for a fact that flash flooding or mudslides are not a concern, I would actually advise (counter to intuition) to just hunker down and wait it out unless you have quick method of exit. I had a lightning bolt hit next to me about 20 odd years back. I was blind and deaf for good 15-20 minutes. It was not fun. Believe it or not, most of my thunderstorm stories come from kayaking. Here I kayak just about weekly so at least once a month I have to sit out there in middle of a lake with bolts hitting all around and 60 mph squal coming through. Storms are never fun for people actually caught in storms. It gets so bad here and just about daily we get 2-4 inch downpours during rainy season so you can't even see over hood of your car creating tons of accidents.
