Thanks for teaching us a lesson on what not to do. It can happen. I laughed about crawling through the window. Our door locked by itself and I had to crawl through a little compartment while cracking up laughing. Brought back a fun memory. Hope you can have some expense free moments to enjoy! Your kids watch how you handle these situations and will learn much from you about problem solving. Good teachers!

You are definitely not alone. First time putting a battery in my trailer I put it in backwards. Sparks flew. My converter and half the lights quit working even when I got it hooked up right. Replaced the fuses and got everything working except 2 interior lights that I knew should have worked. Replaced the fan in the convertor. Still no lights. Nearly replaced the whole converter - which would have required rewiring the entire fuse panel. Totally beyond my limited abilities. Duh . . . there was an interior light switch that i had missed. Flipped the switch and the lights worked!! Thank goodness for you tube and Facebook forums. Thanks for sharing your honesty and persistence. Safe travels.

We had to take apart our door handle as well. We got locked in - but it was due to faulty power door lock actuator - but it looks the same as your handle as on our rig. We took it apart, removed the actuator and reinstalled it.

Pretty happy you didn't burn down your house. For the future, if you take a photo of your batteries and their cables before you unhook the old ones, the re-connect will go quickly and accurately. My husband and I just bought a 2006 Winnebago Journey which is very similar to your Meridian. It came with 3 Optima batteries that were old, like 4 or 5 years old. My husband bought 2 Battle Born Lithium batteries to replace them and discovered that in these rigs it's just not that simple. The batteries were not compatible with the existing charging system and we were faced with having to upgrade the entire system. We ended up going back to the Optima batteries and were stuck with 2 Lithium batteries ($2000.00 investment) that we had no use for. So you made the right choice of batteries for your rig and situation. Thanks for the heads up on the door handle! I'm putting that on our list of "extra parts" to have on hand! Safe travels!!!!

We have a 2006 Itasca Meridian we recently had our door lock fail and our four month old napa deep cycle batteries ,a bank of two will hardly last through the night. possibly a parasitic draw or a bad battery drawing the two down?

Possibly.. test each battery individually. If one is bad then it will kill the other eventually.

Mistakes happen when you’re tired and stressed... I try to always take a step back and double check things when you are in a situation like you were in. Also, experience has taught to keep spares of as many things as passible (fuses & cables). There’s a saying I go by, “Two is one, and one is none!” Good luck... One more thing, I researched Lithium batteries and you have to check what inverter you have to make sure it can properly charge the lithium battery...

Consider your charger. Your shore power will be normally used and converts to 12vdc to charge the batteries. New chargers don't just feed electricity to the battery. There are many "cycles" to condition the battery. I have had totally dead won't take a charge batteries and reconditioned them back to working. Just by hooking up a float charger/ battery maintainer with those features. Available on Amazon easy. I have had terrible experience with Optima.

Oh man. That was great they gave you a battery. I would suggest that you get the victron or equivalent battery monitor with a shunt. Lead acid batteries will not last if you’re abusing them and a battery monitor is a must to know the status. Measuring battery status by voltage is a crap shoot at best. I get that lithium is expensive up front, but they are significantly cheaper, about half in the long run. They charge fully much faster than lead acid and if you boondock a lot, you’ll save as much as $2 a day in diesel costs running the generator. If you boondocked for a year, you’d literally pay for a 100AH LiFePO4 battery in a year. Just a thought.

Our coach has a built in battery monitor showing me the volts plus our inverter control panel shows the the volts. However the inverter volts amount is always a tad bit higher. I would love lithium but it’s a big investment that I’m just not ready to make. One day we will though. Thank you

I always draw myself a diagram of what ever it is that I am taking apart because it is so easy to get confused when there a time lapse in the job. The door handle did you take the screws out on the striker end of the handle,it should come right out easily. I just replaced one on my brother in laws class c. They aren’t the strongest made item for sure ! I hadn’t thought about carrying a spare but that’s a great idea ! Good luck can’t wait to see your next adventure !

It should come right apart there’s screws on the inside part of the handle and a couple on the end where the striker is ,then it should come right out. Do you have a dead bolt lock on it as well as the main lock? If so once you get it apart you can take the striker out and keep the door locked with the dead bolt. Good luck !

You would do better running Concord Lifeline agm 6volt (4) maintenance free. I see these lifeline run into 10 years sometimes. I build rv's on the side and work for a rv distributor. I also worked for Interstate Batteries for 5 years and tested thousands of batteries. Optima is ok but just that.

Be sure that you do not let those batteries go below 50%. Every time you do they loose their capability to fully charge. That’s the difference between Lithiam and deep cycle. You can take a Litiam down to 10% and fully charge.

I don’t know if anyone else has mentioned this. But, at 14:37 in the video you show the top of the batteries. I noticed that one of your red cables is positioned over your battery strap and the two are in close proximity to each other. The battery strap is probably connected to the tray, which in turn is connected to the frame. And as such is connected electrically to your ground for your RV. It may just be the angle of the shot, but if those two (the exposed part of the red cable and the battery strap) come in contact with each other, you could have another fire... And with all the bumping around your coach experiences as you’re driving down the road, it could happen... I’d suggest either rerouting that cable, or if you’re unable, wrap electrical tape around the exposed portions to minimize the risk. You may also be able to bend the red cable so it angles up and away from the terminal, thereby providing a safer distance between the two. Good luck, and lifting prayers for safety over you guys! 🙏🏻💖

Love all your videos and watch them faithfully. I own a 2006 Vectra, very similar to yours. My door handle is the same and also just broke. Purchased new one from Listsinn RV who got it directly from Winnebago. Unfortunately my RV is all locked up and cannot open the door from the inside. I'm going to drill that door handle apart to gain entry. Video your experience with the handle as that video will no doubt get many extra views as the years go on from people who have same problem. I do not believe you will find a door handle off the shelf. Best of luck.

1. ALWAYS support a brick and mortar store when you can. Amazon is hurting too many businesses and one day, we're all going to really regret not having anymore choices just because we wanted the cheapest price. 2. Don't stress the battery issue. As guys, we're often really excited just to be able to isolate the problem and then we rush off to fix it. Hell, just in 2019, I installed one of my spark plugs upside down and spent 15 minutes trying to figure out WHY it wasn't getting tight before I realized. I later decided to blame my 7 year old for asking a lot of questions, and therefore paying attention to him more so than my task at hand🤫. But he got to see my boneheaded mistake so we both learned. Cool that your son could recite the red and black battery terminal mistake. He'll remember that moment for the rest of his life, so be proud of it!

We are also looking to replace the standard lead acid batteries in our coach as they no longer hold much of a charge. Did you have to do anything different with the house charger for the AGM batteries? We have a magnum inverter/charger so I think it would adapt to this battery but not sure about these different battery types. The blue top optima seems to be a good choice for battery, would love to get the battle born but being weekend warriors I’m sure I can justify their cost for our use 😆.

The blue tops will work - they are as good a choice as any. Moving to lithium means verifying that your converter/charger charge profile is compatible. If not, you'd have to replace that also. I'd ignore advice to switch until you have time really do some research and planning. I usually double check voltages with a volt meter before hooking up the second battery in a system. If you hook up the positive terminal first, you should have 12v from that to negative on both batteries and to the chassis. If you hook up the negative terminals first, you should have +12v to the positive terminal on both batteries, and zero volts between the positive terminals on the batteries.

Mike, there was 2 things with my house batteries going on. One thing is I was setting my power share on my inverter remote set on 50 amps. Me thinking I needed 50 amps due to me being plugged up to a 50 amp power. Secondly my inverter was going bad . The charger component was not cutting off when the batteries got charged. I was having to add water every several days ti the house batteries.Basically cooking my batteries.
