I love what Vanessa said about breed temperaments. It is so important to keep in mind what each breed was bred to do, not just for bully breeds, but all breeds. Regardless of how well trained any dog is, some behaviors in dogs are instinctual and sometimes you don't know what situations will trigger those instincts. It's always better to be informed and cautious than to accidentally allow your dog to find themselves in a situation where they end up hurting themselves, someone else, or another animal
@BBQJester3 ай бұрын
unfortunately many dog owners buy a particular breed because its a cute puppy without understanding the personality of different breeds
@mssmitty53083 ай бұрын
Exactly. People love to say “it’s all in how you raise them,” or “it’s the owner, not the dog” if something goes wrong. But genetics are so important in an animal’s behavior. Ignoring that fact is setting everyone up for failure. I’m so glad Vanessa talked about this.

You both really don't understand the root of the problem do you.
@naemaah73722 ай бұрын
@@TheLastCrumb. on the opposite side, people will buy certain breeds based off of generalized personality traits (like pitties- loyal, won't bite you unless you consistently abuse but u can abuse their strong nature without fail to appear stronger). many bad people get certain breeds for bad reasons and this will make it seem like there are more bad cases (meanwhile goldens are usually gotten as family dogs yet they bite just as much as pitties in terms of cases). that the root?
@TheLastCrumb.2 ай бұрын
@naemaah7372 the root of the problem is that bully xl is that most of the time you're not getting what you think you're getting. That is the problem. Only last week a beloved family pet turned on the families 10yr old and killed her. They are an extremely unpredictable breed and the reason they are banned is because it is scientifically proven. It can't be bypassed and it can't be trained of them. They are not even a proper breed of dog. Over breeding and incest is the problem because that's what causes them to turn. If someone owns one of these dogs then they need to be very careful. Most attacks by these dogs are in their owners and not strangers

In 20++ years working in the veterinary field, these guys and the put bulls never gave me one single issue. Awesome dogs WITH the right owner that knows the breed, but they are truly sweethearts. Like she said in the video.
@mygirldarby3 ай бұрын
50% of all dog bites that require a trip to the ER are from pit bulls. And as Vanessa said, these dogs have been bred to fight for a very long time. That breeding includes selecting the most aggressive male and female and mating them. They continued that practice intensively for many years and to this day it is still happening. This breeding has naturally created a dog with a much higher genetic propensity for turning without warning. A dog that is more aggressive and less trustworthy. The stories of the sweetheart pit bull family dog who one day turns and rips apart grandma or a child are all too real. To pretend this isn't true, or that only "bad owners" have pit bulls that turn aggressive is dangerous misinformation and no doubt has played a role in people not understanding the breed. Please don't tell people these dogs are true sweethearts. They have a MUCH HIGHER rate of turning. It isn't the dogs' fault that they've been bred to fight but it is a fact.
@Dreyno3 ай бұрын
It’s like genetics doesn’t exist. Centuries of breeding dogs for aggression and bite strength and the “right owner” overcomes all of it? Enough cuddles and treats and they’re all sweethearts? She looks like a pit puppy I met once (I think she was a pit, she might have been an XL bully from how similar she looks). Sweetest dog ever, but taught me in an instant why they're so dangerous. No, she didn't attack. She just jumped on me and begged for pets, and petting that four- or five-month-old body was like petting a granite statue. Their muscles are just built different, and if you're not very strong and don't start very early, chances are they'll do what they want when they want. Also, since they're so strong, even if they're just defending themselves, they're likely to come out way better off than the dog that attacked them. If a dog attacks a pit or XLB, the attacker is much more likely to suffer injury than its intended victim.

There is an XL Bully puppy currently being trained by the same trainer as my Mastiff puppy. They are in a 6-week board and train program. Gus is still fairly short when compared to my Molly, but I can see the potential power in his body. Our trainer does general obedience, but specializes in service dog and protection/police dog training. Molly will be my service dog. Even if Gus just gets general obedience training, he will be set up to be a wonderful pet his entire life.

I've had a new dog in my life - Yota. He is near the same exact dog, same age too. He is an absolute sweetheart, wiggles his butt all around, always happy, always joyful, big time goofball, kindof dumb sometimes 😅, but survives and protects my mountain from deer and alerts of larger critters. Easily trainable, but can't be away from owner too long. Whines a bit, but still a puppy. Likes sticks most of all, and we have a lot of that in the woods. Very proud of his sticks, loves fetch, hides his treats and toys, and sleeps most of the night outside by house without too much commotion. Loves affection & attention. Delicate taking treats from my hand. Great with everyone. Calmed down a bit after getting fixed. Puppy dog eyes that melt the heart...very sweet & loyal dog.

This was a really great way to approach discussing this breed. The groups of people who go online saying Pitbull and mixes are all totally sweet and only violent owners create violent Pitbull/Bullies do more harm than good for the cause because the reality is that you don't have to be a violent owner to end up with a dangerous pit or bully, you just have to be a negligent owner when it comes to their socialization and training. That is why we read stories of perfectly normal, loving people being literally torn to shreds by a Pitbull they've owned for half a decade. The reality is these dogs need owners who are willing to put in the time and effort it takes to ensure they are completely safe to keep around other animals and small children. If you aren't capable of putting in that effort, do not get a breed with naturally high prey drive or breeds that were created to fight things like literal BULLS.

and for anyone considering getting a pitbull or any bully breed should remember that genetics also take a huge part in what the dogs temperment will be. I say this because I've seen stories of dogs that have been properly socialized and trained still attack/kill other animals and humans. So specially if you get a pitbull that has an unknown background you might never be able to completely trust that dog. It doesn't make you a bad owner to be extra cautious with dog breeds like these.
@megeraashley77773 ай бұрын
It’s the same with Rottweilers. My bf’s family had one that lived till he was 13. His dad trained their dog when he was a puppy & they owned a lot of animals such as chickens,, rabbits, horses. That dog was the sweetest thing until you threatened his people, property, or the other animals. Unfortunately I only met that dog a couple of times before he passed away but after meeting him the first time he would always lay on my feet lol.
@captainsavvy073 ай бұрын
100000% agree. As Vanessa has also said multiple times, a dog's nature will be influenced by its genetics and breed. The people on both sides of the "is the bully XL dangerous" argument do the breed a disservice. The people who won't hear a bad thing against them ignore the very real risks that come with such a powerful breed, and the people that believe that the breed shouldn't exist ignore that it's not the breed's fault that they are often owned by reckless owners that don't give them the training they need. However, dogs like the bully xl also do far more physical damage simply because of the breed that they are and the power and strength that they possess. If a tiny little yappy dog goes ape and bites something there's far les chance of whatever it bit dying than with the powerful bite of a bully, so sadly a bully breed snapping is inherently going to be more dangerous. I would never own one. It's simply not a breed I like. I also don't like boxers, mastiffs, pitbulls, bulldogs, bull terriers etc. Do I think the bully xl should be banned? I don't know. I think if we can't trust all owners that buy such a powerful breed to train them, then they can be extremely dangerous. But there are other breeds that can be equally dangerous if not trained and there's far less discussion about them. I don't know what the solution is tbh.

@@kerrywhimsey2061 Yes, but certain breeds also have a genetic predisposition for certain types of behavior. Not all american pitbulls will be animal/dog-aggressive (as human aggression was never a thing encouraged in a breed originally used for blood sports), but some do have a notably harder time unlearning those behaviors. What's more, some never reliably unlearn these things and simply need to be managed properly to avoid triggering the aggression.

And a few months later another dog on my street was attacked by a different pit bull. I've known many sweet pit mixes, but I don't want to be the owner of one. Too risky.

Unstable temperaments in pit bull mixes is becoming a serious issue. There is some sort of genetic issue caused by bad breeding. I used to have one and had him PTS because he was truly unpredictable in his aggression towards humans, despite being socialized and trained up well from puppyhood. It's really disappointing to see the types of people who ruined the pit bull mix are now taking up the American Bully, the bully breed created specifically to return to that rock solid temperament the breeds were famous for.
