Haven’t you ever wondered why every glass of Tropicana Pure Premium orange juice tastes the same, no matter where in the world you buy it or what time of year you’re drinking it in? Or maybe your brand of choice is Minute Maid or Simply Orange or Florida’s Natural. Either way, I can ask the same question. Why is the taste and flavor so consistent? Why is it that the Minute Maid never tastes like the Tropicana, but always tastes like its own unique beverage? Generally speaking, beverages that taste consistently the same follow recipes. They’re things like Coca Cola or Pepsi or a Starbucks Frappuccino. When you make orange juice at home, each batch tastes a little different depending on the oranges you made it from. I hope you’re hearing warning bells in your head right about now. The reason your store bought orange juice is so consistently flavorful has more to do with chemistry than nature. Making OJ should be pretty simple. Pick oranges. Squeeze them. Put the juice in a carton and voilà! But actually, there is an important stage in between that is an open secret in the OJ industry. After the oranges are squeezed, the juice is stored in giant holding tanks and, critically, the oxygen is removed from them. That essentially allows the liquid to keep (for up to a year) without spoiling- but that liquid that we think of as orange juice tastes nothing like the Tropicana OJ that comes out of the carton. (source) When the juice is stripped of oxygen it is also stripped of flavor providing chemicals. Juice companies therefore hire flavor and fragrance companies, the same ones that formulate perfumes for Dior and Calvin Klein, to engineer flavor packs to add back to the juice to make it taste fresh. Flavor packs aren’t listed as an ingredient on the label because technically they are derived from orange essence and oil. Yet those in the industry will tell you that the flavor packs, whether made for reconstituted or pasteurized orange juice, resemble nothing found in nature. The packs added to juice earmarked for the North American market tend to contain high amounts of ethyl butyrate, a chemical in the fragrance of fresh squeezed orange juice that, juice companies have discovered, Americans favor. Mexicans and Brazilians have a different palate. Flavor packs fabricated for juice geared to these markets therefore highlight different chemicals, the decanals say, or terpene compounds such as valencine. The formulas vary to give a brand’s trademark taste. If you’re discerning you may have noticed Minute Maid has a candy like orange flavor. That’s largely due to the flavor pack Coca-Cola has chosen for it. Some companies have even been known to request a flavor pack that mimics the taste of a popular competitor, creating a “hall of mirrors” of flavor packs. Despite the multiple interpretations of a freshly squeezed orange on the market, most flavor packs have a shared source of inspiration: a Florida Valencia orange in spring. (source) WHY AREN’T THESE FLAVOR PACKS LISTED AS INGREDIENTS? Good question! As with all industrial foods, it’s because of our convoluted labeling laws. You see, these “flavor packs are made from orange by-products - even though these ‘by-products’ are so chemically manipulated that they hardly qualify as ‘by-products’ any more.” (source) Since they’re made from by-products that originated in oranges, they can be added to the orange juice without being considered an “ingredient,” despite the fact that they are chemically altered. SO, WHAT SHOULD YOU DO ABOUT IT? First off, I must ask: Why are you drinking juice?? Juice removed from the fruit is just concentrated fructose without any of the naturally-occurring fiber, pectin, and other goodies that make eating a whole fruit good for you. Did you know, for example, that it takes 6-8 medium sized apples to make just 1 cup of apple juice? You probably wouldn’t be able to eat 6-8 medium apples in a single sitting. (I know I can barely eat one!) But you can casually throw back a cup of apple juice, and you would probably be willing to return for seconds. That’s why fruit juice is dangerous. It’s far too easy to consume far too much sugar.

Exactly. Drinking 1/2 cup of orange juice is equivalent to eating 2-4 medium-sized oranges. Sugary drinks cause overeating!

Indeed! Also for people who want to learn more about sugar and how juice companies try to market juices as healthy, I recommend the documentary “That Sugar Film.”
@calebcapoccia6 жыл бұрын
@Jesse Johnson, Sure , OJ companies don't add sugar, but oranges naturally have a lot of sugar. As Miki Hazel pointed out, when we eat whole oranges, we only eat about one or two before getting full, and we consume the fiber. However, if we extract only the sugary juice from the fruit, we can consume much more of it, because the fiber is not there to fill us up.

There's too much sugar in ANY type of processed juices, even if it's "natural" sugar or naturally occurring fruit sugar. +Eric K Depends which fats. Unsaturated usually are good and break down easy enough. Some of the saturated fats (that a lot of America fast food companies use) don't break down easily; and the fat gets stored in your body that makes you fat. The key to stay in shape is simply eating low-calory-high-energy food in combination with regular working out.

STR33TSofJUST1C3 Sorry, but the giant hamburger bun has no fat, the ketchup you put on the burger has no fat, the fries have fat but are loaded with carbs, and the Coke has no fat. The actual beef you get in your burger is the least of our problems.

My parents generation used to get fresh orange juice delivered to the home daily along with fresh milk in glass bottles. Growing up in West Africa in the 60-70's, I remember we just peeled the fresh oranges and ate them any time. And there were lots of them too. If one wanted to be fancy, go ahead and squeeze them for some juice, which I always found to be too much work for the amount of juice one gets. People should be encouraged to eat more fresh fruits as much as possible. Anything packaged, often, cannot be free of chemistry. If you are enjoying some OJ in the winter months, you are most likely drinking from a batch from a pasturized storage barrel.

@PurpleRegulator8 жыл бұрын
There is bad sugar. For example, diet drinks will cause your pancreas to think there *is* sugar from the artificial sweeteners in it. Since there is no real sugar, your appetite increases. A more specific example, saccharin, a popular "Sweet n Low" kind of sweetener, is biologically not sugar. Tasting sweet =/= sugar.
@Sharak198 жыл бұрын
+Jason Big that's not true. Sugar is good for you. It nourishes your cells. It's the quantity that we consume that's bad for you. Plants evolved to produce sugar in nectar and fruits to feed insects and mammals. Why sugar if it was bad for you? For the sake of making money the natural foods given to us by this planet are corrupted and then when it corrupts our health more people who want to make money tell you it's bad for you and to sign up on their weight loss program for sugar free food or instruction. Its all a scam. Just eat natural and whole when you can. Pick an orange over a glass of juice.
@hjr95618 жыл бұрын
There is nothing wrong with almost any sugars provided they are contained within the "natural" food. Perhaps the only exception to that is honey, which is mainly just concentrated sugars. The problem is with added processed sugars, of which we are getting too much. The the manufacturers do not want to put on the labels what is the percentage of ADDED sugars, just totals sugars. Things like tomato sauce or ketchup have up to 35% sugar, where in reality there should be no ADDED sugars. And there is so many names they call sugar so we never know what the manufacturers are really adding. Cut out added sugars or anything that contains added sugars, and provided you don't eat far to much or any processed foods, you will lose weight. That includes processed fruit juices. Eat fresh where possible.

The pasteurizing is what kills the flavor in the juice. But companies are required to pasteurize all juice and dairy products. If anyone here ever ate an orange straight from the tree, or within 2 days of being picked. They would notice a big difference in taste. Everyone has tasted that acidy taste. That is the orange decomposing. The acid devouring the orange. Within 3 to 4 days of picking it starts. If you eat an orange within the first 2 days of being picked from the tree. There is no acid taste at all. Also, people would be shocked at the amount of fruit such as oranges that are thrown away, just because of size. All oranges in bags need to be a certain size. Same with those made into juice. If they are a 1/4 inch too small they are thrown away. Reason being, not enough juice in them to account for all the extra charges in disposal of the remains. Companies would have tons of extra peals to dispose of. To give you an idea of how much is thrown away? For every 8 truck loads, one truck load is thrown away. One truck load is 80,000 pounds. Just with fresh oranges, there will be over 100 truck loads sent out every day from 1 plant. So do the math and you will see a good average of what is thrown away. Oh and the bags of fresh apples you buy in the stores? Are over a year old..
@joewilliamson23526 жыл бұрын

ravener in case you missed it, ill say it a bit slower for you. - One is Natural the other is Artificial. and side note, real Oranges has "Natural Fiber" which is needed by us biological humans, Fiber is needed for us humans to move our biological waste (poop) from our bodies naturally. One is Natural and the other is not. Big difference as one can kill you while the other can not. ~ Happy drinking......
@ravener969 жыл бұрын
RecordTrance holy fuck dude. "One is Natural the other is Artificial" not really, concentrate is just orange juice with the water removed, the "chemicals" they may or may not add (to be honest i don't give a shit if they do or not) are the same esters and acids the orange makes. the "artificial chemicals" you speak of are chemically identical to "the real deal". "Also in regards to sugar & water. One is Natural and the other is not. Big difference as one can kill you while the other can not." no, no it's not they are both sucrose c6h12o6 and is produced from sugar cane just as naturally as the oranges are. in some cases high fructose corn syrup is used, but that might actually be even closer to the original orange than regular sugar as oranges are naturally high in fructose. this comes after the fact that the concentrate is already high in sugars. "Artificial orange juice has fragrances. Same ones that make perfumes that you wear on your body" no, they are not the same ones you wear on your body, they are the same ones that , in nature, oranges make. the ones you wear on your body generally come from flowers and such and are chemically different from the ones they would add to orange juice. chemicals aren't scary, everything (for the most part at least) is made from chemicals. sugar is a chemical, vinegar is (mostly a single) chemical. the chemicals that make up orange flavour are chemicals (esters for the most part). you seem like the kind of person to not get vaccinated, not exactly related, but just FYI, they work, go get them.

Why do you drink orange juice then? To get vitamins. If you are drinking orange juice for the taste, then just buy Fanta. When juice gets boiled (pasteurized) it kills all vitamins and minerals. The juice is "dead" inside. Squeezing oranges takes 2 minutes, the juice tastes great and fresh oranges are sold everywhere year-round these days. It amazes me how ppl are so surprised that things are processed and not natural or real. The simple fact ia this. If you dont want to grow it pick it and prepare the food and instead buy it from a company that will do all the work for you. It has to be processed to survive the process.

Have you ever squeezed orange juice fresh and tried it and then drank oj from a carton? I'm from Florida, I see what they spray in the orange groves. I won't buy it from the store

I was on my Uncles farm and he had orange trees. Sometimes the oranges stay on the tree several years. Now pluck one off the tree on a hot summer day(100F) and bite into the fermenting fruit. Hot orange liquor. There is no comparison. Wicked good. I am wondering if they do the same thing with apple juice as I live right beside a Juice maker in an apple valley. Is the flavour packet harmful to us when consumed? I did prefer artificial Maple syrup over real maple syrup...because there was more flavor.

Nicaela Emily , they didn’t actually conclude the juice loses its nutritional value or is bad for you. They only concluded that juice may not be picked the day before you drink it. I’m sure if you knew how everything was made you wouldn’t eat or drink again.

Oranges are a tropical fruit. Tropical fruits used to be a luxury. Before the days of chemical processing. They were only delivered fresh. They also weren't available everywhere, because they were intended to be fresh, and that's not possible to do. If you demand all of these exotic foods from places far away from you, and all year around, then processing is the price you are going to have to pay. If you want fresh food, shop from local farms and learn to adapt to your region's natural crops.

I was surprised to find out how many oranges I had to squeeze to fill a glass… I don't remember how many but it was a lot. I was also surprised to see that the actual juice was not bright yellow. The boxed juices taste artificial to me.
@MikeGreenwood516 жыл бұрын
Next time you have a day off Duff Beer and go for fresh orange juice. Just push your finger in to the first orange before sqeezing and hold it up in front of your eyes and count one. Then repeat for each finger keeping the thumb for last. If you fill the glass before using your thumb then the count is less than five. Becarefull not to put your fingers in the juicer.

If you expect orange juice to be literately orange's liquids squeezed into a bottle then shipped to your local supermarket you should go back to school and learn about food deterioration.

Somewhere in the world there are people with real problems. Up here in Canada, we're worried that a $5 carton of orange juice isn't snooty enough.
@00_UU5 жыл бұрын
Somewhere in the world people don't have enough food. Here in North America we have poison as our food since it is processed so heavily there is nothing good left in it. So people eat this garbage food, then they get sick, buy heartburn medication and go to hospitals. As the result food companies make money, pharmacies make money and hospitals make money. Everyone profits off people being sick and all of it starts with processed food.
@GalaxyPedlar5 жыл бұрын
@@00_UU Calling orange juice poison is going a bit far. This is not lead in the water. If you're going to buy OJ at $5 for 2 litres, some corners are going to be cut. If you really want fresh squeezed, you can buy the oranges and do it yourself or shop at a high end store - but it's going to cost you a lot more.

Hi! This is my second video with yall. I really appreciate yall doing so much work to bring about Important information on what we put in our bodies. We use to never buy bottled water, except if we went somewhere and got thirsty. Now, my husband buys cases of bottled water for convenience . He Carrie's a cold food bag, pretty well insulated, and Carrie's a few bottles of cold water so he doesn't have to spend any money. But, what is happening when if we reuse the bottles? If you could answer this, I'd greatly appreciate it. We also refill the bottles and freeze them for extra ice. Again, thank you, and I'll be following yall closely. God bless yall and yours.

Big Ag is 1000% about profit and 'pretty' appetizing food that is addictive. Nutrition and health is the least of their concerns.
