Should there be an age limit for U.S. elected officials?

U.S. Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell appeared to freeze while speaking to reporters in Kentucky Wednesday, just as he did earlier this summer in Washington. It has sparked debate over an age limit for elected officials. Political commentator Roland Martin, CEO of New Vision Media, told Power and Politics it's not about age so much as it's about health and stamina.

It's crazy watching US government hearings where political officials are grilling technology titans about accountability (like privacy, data collection and sales to 3rd parties)..... but they ask dumb questions like: "If I move 5 feet to the left and go sit over there... does Google know that through my phone?" *Holds up phone for emphasis*. Appreciate sentiment, but IMO competence tests broadcast in real time is answer as IMO pols egos have no limits ie if you restrict their terms to national retirement age, those same pols will raise national retirement age so they can continue in power, continue to rake in more taxes, start paying Medicare later.... And claim the deficit is down! Also, 1 of pols biggest funders ie pension finds will be delighted as well. Apologies for my cynicism.

In the U.S that aspect doesn't matter.

No, there 1000% should be age limits. Look how many 80 year Olds are in charge of our country. Most of them are so disconnected from the majority of Americans. How can you expect a person who is 90 years old be able to understand and relate with Americans who are in there 20's. I think that the cap should be 70, there's no reason that 80 and 90 year Olds need to be in our government

Why is he talking about age and health like an either or. There should be an age limit. But health also plays a part. If you’re 40 and your health isn’t good, just like every job there is a time that that person can no longer fulfill that job. Also, an age limit should be set at 65 just like every other job has a retirement age. We all know there are doctors out there that can be paid off to give a good bill of health. Just like Mitch’s doctor did for him. This doctor should be fired and his licence removed.

The host should have pushed back when Martin gave up Diane Feinstein as a positive example of someone older than Biden who's still serving. Feinstein's own fitness for office has been called into question multiple times since the beginning of this year, and rightly so based on what Ive read and seen.

Court age/term limits is the only thing my split on, mostly looking at the Supreme Court. The main reason why the Supreme Court doesn't have an age limit is because the court doesn't reflect the will of the people, president and congress, but rather is an apolitical body that is stable. By having age or term limits on it that stability is broken with greater turnover.

It makes no sense. I'm sorry to say it but it's a reality we all face. Mortality and age. Can we really trust that they, or anyone at that age, would be truly capable of making a decision for a future that they know they will most likely not see with their own eyes? Can we truly say that a deep internal fear that we all share, in our inevitable mortality would not sway anyone's mind and cloud our judgement? I say no, I have yet to come across a perfect being. I do not trust that those who have never known hardship like the common man or have been so far removed for so long, can or will make the proper mindful decisions for our futures without some degree of self interest in a harmful manner. In the old days we looked to the Elderly for wisdom as they were wise. However in this day and age most can reach old age if they only know how to budget right. Even poor people live to be old. A feat we never had before in human history. It shows that wisdom and knowledge are not mandatory to reach such ages. They should be advisor roles but hold no power. This has been shown as their place since tribal times. Advisors and guides but not decision makers.

Nelson Mandela was 95 when he died and was competant until the end. However competancy tests are necessary. Biden suffers from severe arthritis in his back and neuropathy (lack of feeling in his feet) which explains his difficulty with airplane steps but does not affect his competancy for office.
