Another excellent lesson on sharpening equipment. Just to the point. Worth watching many times; that's for sure. Waiting for these puppies to appear. Awesome, BBB. Thank You very much.

Thanks, I just ordered the 400/800 bonded venev diamond stone. Looking forward to trying them out. Looking for a stone that cuts a little slower for touch ups on high carbide pm steels. If these stones last a while longer then DMT, I’m golden.

Nice video, but I like the compromises of a resin bond over the compromises of the other bonds. Just picked up my molds yesterday after getting a finish applied to them, woo hooo. 2-1/2 kilos of diamond arrived 10 minutes ago. I should be making some in the next week or so, too much production to do first. I will let you know when I have a set done and we can play.

You need to make a KZbin brother, show off your stones. Very good news.

@@kevinfitz3721 Sweet! I finally got the first batch molded last October after a bunch of unforeseen problems. I recently did a dressing video on them and have a link to my website in that video for more info.

So how do you flatten a metal bonded CBN stone? Flat glass with SiC powder? I am guessing you would only rarely need to do it, every couple ferric treatments?
@georgeyoung42923 жыл бұрын
Good information Shawn.. Actually you are the only one that explained the pros and cons of each type.. So basicaly in optimal set up Metalic for reprofiling and rebeveling and resin for scratch refinement and polishing? Im not mentioning vitrified cause i never tried one and dont have any idea how such stone feels and works but it sound like good compromise between metalic and resin bonding.. Thank you Bear

so what's the update in 2020? :) what's a good newbie setup as far as diamond stones go? would Venev 240/400 + 800/1200 and a strop (1 and 2 micron? 1 and 4? 1 and 0,5) suffice? would a 100/240 + 400/800 + strop combo be better? how about CBN stones? how do they compare to bonded diamond stones? love your vids btw, both the sweet memes and the even better educational ones. you, KK Roman and Michael Christy should be consultants for every knife manufacturer in the world, lol :D

How long do you think a CBN stone will last? My DMT stone wore out in a week, though probably because I was applying too much pressure.

Do you know why making a vitrified cbn stone costs so much is there something that makes it harder to do them then having a more typical abrasive in it
@FearNoSteel5 жыл бұрын
Different bond strength, CBN and diamond are also more sensitive to higher temps used to fire traditional alumina based stones. More complicated to manufacturer vitrified bonded stones.
@bp-hx9ts5 жыл бұрын
Big Brown Bear I ask because there are some very cheap stones that are vitrified
@FearNoSteel5 жыл бұрын
haha indeed, but none with diamond and cbn for super cheap.

I am new to your and michael Christy channel. Just pick up some of my first good knives this year. Pm2, delica, 940. Wanting to learn free hand sharpening. What do you recommend. Stones, metal. Ceramics. Maybe a Tri hone or maybe a guided system like worksharp guided system

the Venev 400/800 combo stone and a means to flatten and dress the stone.

Is the choice of cBN over diamond just a matter of manufacture? I mean like bonding or heat tolerance.

What do you use to dress the resin bonded stones? I'm using a cheap nagura like Michael Christy that seems to clean them off well but they're starting to dish out
@FearNoSteel5 жыл бұрын
Flatten them with a piece of glass and 120 grit SiC powder.

The best method of dressing a resin bond stone is a flat plate, I use engineered quartz because I have plenty lying around, and brown fused aluminum oxide. The aluminum oxide holds up better than the silicon carbide, it's not as friable and is easier on the flat plate. The grit depends on the grit of resin stone you are trying to dress. 60 micron is good for the coarse stones, 30 micron and larger, and works fine for the finer resin bond stones but will wear it excessively. A finer grit aluminum oxide will dress just as well but wear the resin stone much slower.
