Wow! The Great Muppet Caper was released in 1981. If this feature was done anytime near that, this surely has to be one of Elmo's first appearances.

@@mickieee It takes years for a character to develop. At first, Elmo was just another random background monster Muppet. Than Brian Muehl tried soft, caveman-like grunting. Than Richard Hunt tried for a few episodes. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipeTgHyJrL6Zj7c Hunt was so frustrated, that he tossed the puppet aside to Kevin Clash, and the rest is history.
