This happened to me - a rental loaner while my car was being repaired. I dropped the car off and left the key in the box. The next day, I got a call from Hertz threatening to have me arrested if I didn’t return their car. They later revealed, the car was not there - and pushed that they would report the car as stolen. I luckily had the habit of taking a photo or video of my rental drop offs - I did so because I worried, what if the car is damaged and they try to blame me? I showed my video of the drop off to the investigator - who immediately checked the rental car place’s video surveillance recordings. Sure enough, a Hertz employee was seen driving the car off lot - they were running a huge scam. Take pics and videos; you never know when you may need it.

I rent from Hertz. After seeing this, never again. Scares me to think how their own incompetence could land me in jail. Not worth it. Over the years I had Hertz rental cars stolen on two occasions -- one in California, the other in NYC. In both cases Hertz tried to bill me for the full value of the cars. American Express told them to go pound sand and collect it from their own insurance company.

In the eighties, one of my best friends, a wounded Korean War veteran, was a beloved area executive at Hertz. (he is long deceased) Nothing happened in his section without his knowledge, and he would spend time talking to the customers at the rental stations even though he was in the big office, and handwrote Christmas cards to the customers he met. This kind of thing would never have happened back when even corporations were allowed to care about customers. Welcome to the modern world where people are basically another worthless number to anyone.

We rented a car from Hertz 2 years ago. Showed up when scheduled to take possession, did the walk around and was free to go. Engine light came on right after we left town so we brought it to the nearest Hertz. They took the Sorrento, gave us a Durango with 8 miles on it. I remember looking at my friends thinking we’ve lucked out. We have a brand new car for the next week. The vacation was fantastic and we returned the Durango to our original pickup location a week later, on time. They asked us where the Sorrento was. We told them what happened and they said they have record of us renting a second vehicle not returning one and picking up another. We were like “why would we do that, it’s just 3 of us in the car?” She said “I don’t know why. People rent cars all the time. We are gonna need that Sorrento back or you will be charged for it.” It was almost surreal, like we were all staring at each other waiting for her to start laughing. She said she was going to have to involve the police. Standing there, we called the other Hertz. The woman who answered said she didn’t remember a Sorrento/Durango “swap out” and she was there all day the day we did it. This whole time, my friend who stood quiet, remembered he shot a video of us pulling away from the 2nd Hertz in the Durango saying goodbye to the “Sorry Sorrento”. We showed her the video, she said she’d look into it and that we could leave. Got a call saying they found the car on a airport backlot waiting to be “serviced for its issues”. She was sorry for all the inconvenience and thanked us for our business. To this day, I’m certain we would’ve either had to pay for the Sorrento or be in jail if we didn’t have that stupid little video. NEVER AGAIN HERTZ

I had a similar situation. I rented a midsize car for a month and they gave me a Toyota Corolla after 2 days the headlights started turning on and off at night so i drove to the nearest Hertz and they only had a Cadillac CTS with 140 miles on it so they gave it to me and i was also so happy because they said that it's for the price of the Corolla. I even liked the car so much that i decided to extend the rental for one more month by calling them and asking them to make sure the price won't change if i extend it for one more month and they guaranteed me it will be same price as the Corolla. Than when I took the car back they tried charging me $2100 for a luxury car instead of the $800 i was supposed to pay. I had to sit there speak with the manager it took 2 hours but they finally lowered the price back to $800 because i tricked them and told them that i am a reporter with channel 7 news and i will let everyone know about their scams on the next news broadcast and it worked they instantly lowered it and gave me a 3 day free rental of any car i would like on the lot and for fun i took the Dodge Challenger R/T for 3 days.

My experience was a nightmare and Hertz didn’t care. We were going on a long trip and we reserved a Toyota van. We picked it up the night before we left and packed the vehicle for a predawn departure. The next morning about 7 miles into our trip we noticed an engine warning light come on, so we went to Hertz and they replaced the vehicle and we departed Kentucky for Texas. A week later we return and find out we’ve been charged for both vehicles and they have no record of the first vehicle being returned. An hour later after showing photos of the first vehicle and the odometer, the incompetent employee finally decided to admit I returned the first vehicle and magically found the paperwork. The photos saved me. I will never rent a vehicle from Hertz again under any circumstances.

It sounds like cars are rented through the individual insurance companies & there isn’t proper follow ups because cars are driven inter state, therefore it’s very difficult to track the issues. The policy insurance companies are failing to maintain communication with the car rental companies to keep up with the status. That’s why Hertz is filing car stolen reports. It’s got a big deal to do with the insurance companies not keeping the renters/policy holders up to date with Hertz. Hertz looks like the rental cars aren’t getting paid by the insurance companies and then chaos is happening. This means that if someone is renting a vehicle for longer terms, they should maintain communication with Hertz about their own status. Usually when dealing with insurance companies, they tell people it’s fine, all is good but it’s not even confirmed. This could be more of an insurance problem than a Hertz problem.

Idk. I have a feeling that it's something as simple as someone misinputting information or missing a few key strokes. Unfortunately, their mistakes will lead to life changing circumstances for the party on the other side of that faulty information. Should they be reprimanded for not doing their job thoroughly and correctly, sure. Prosecution? Idk about that. Most of the time stuff like this is much more innocent than it seems. The company should take the responsibility for this as they probably have cheap software systems that doesn't go through proper data confirmation checks to insure all inputted information is correct. HOWEVER, it could be something much more sinister...I'm just making an educated guess that it's human error w/out proper procedures to avoid malpractices.

SOME TIPS When Renting: 1. ALWAYS no matter the rental company, get a check-in/return receipt. 2. Upon returning, take pics with the vehicle and also the license plate. 3. If it's after hours, call customer service and make sure that they have you down as having returned the vehicle and get a receipt emailed to you immediately. 4. Lastly, check with your credit card company to make sure your charges have stopped. If you keep a rental car over the allotted days, they continue to charge the card that they have on file. These are just a few things that I have had to use in times past with rental companies. Gotta stay protected... This country's moral compass is spinning out of control. 😕 Please be safe.

Thankfully, my rental experiences have never gone this bad. However, there was a time that Hertz told me my rental was never returned and that I needed to contact the police to notify them that it was missing. After a week of paying $100/day for a missing car (and me calling them every day extremely concerned), I was finally able to speak to a competent manager. He told me the car had been taken to maintenance after I returned the car and someone forgot to put that in the system. 😡 I couldn’t believe how easy it was for Hertz to place the blame of them misplacing a car on me!

@@garethHK808 yes, it usually comes as an email but my receipt was never sent. That was one of the reasons I ended up calling them. Plus, I started getting extra charges. I was told they needed to follow up on the car’s location and that in the meantime I should report the car missing. I was concerned that they were going to drain my account until the car was found. I wonder how many people did not have proof and were forced to pay.

We rented a car from them and as soon as we arrived at our location in NY we got a ticket for expired tags, which was extremely embarrassing. Then during our trip the vehicle started to shake to the point we feard for our safety. We took the car to a local hertz and they didn't have another mini van to trade ours for so they checked the tires and told that they would pay the ticket for the expired tags. It was a horrible experience. NOTHING LIKE what has happened to the people in this storie but... please beware of this car rental company. They are extremely negligent.

Working at Hertz right now and I saw the opposite extreme happen here a few months ago. An ex employee brought his gang of losers to the lot at night and stole cars from the lot because we never changed the gate code. He did it over a couple of months and it amounted to dozens of stolen vehicles. They didn't steal the cheap ones either. I asked the boss how so many vehicles could be missing before we noticed (the only reason we even noticed was because they stole an Escalade we had specially set aside for a big customer). He said that the company is reluctant to report them stolen because it could be an oversight and the vehicle could be in an unexpected place or was not checked in properly and they don't want a situation like the ones above.

I'm so glad this is finally happening to Hertz and only disappointed it's taken this long for enough people to speak out. They charged me 300 for a car rental I paid for my uncle who was flying out to visit me. When my uncle goes to pick it up, they charged his card another 300 after asking for his card to put on file. It took months of arguing back and forth with Hertz and the bank, but the bank eventually gave him his money back after apparently employees were pocketing off the book charges. I will never fk with Hertz again. Straight criminals run that "business". Let that whole thing burn.

The cops are equally at fault for believing the theft claim without evidence. If someone reports a car as stolen after they let a friend borrow it, the cops get suspicious about the theft claim if the friend has no criminal record and seems genuinely flabberagsted. A few years ago my husband and I rented a car in Florida from Thrifty which is a subsidiary of Hertz. 10 months later we were notified by our insurance company that they filed a claim that we totaled the car. Stating that the engine was seized due to water damage. I happened to have kept my receipt and was able to prove by the mileage at the time I returned the car was less than at the time of the claim, showing that the car was driven after I returned it. If I had not kept my receipt, we would have been liable for the damage to that car.
