This happened to me - a rental loaner while my car was being repaired. I dropped the car off and left the key in the box. The next day, I got a call from Hertz threatening to have me arrested if I didn’t return their car. They later revealed, the car was not there - and pushed that they would report the car as stolen. I luckily had the habit of taking a photo or video of my rental drop offs - I did so because I worried, what if the car is damaged and they try to blame me? I showed my video of the drop off to the investigator - who immediately checked the rental car place’s video surveillance recordings. Sure enough, a Hertz employee was seen driving the car off lot - they were running a huge scam. Take pics and videos; you never know when you may need it.

We rented a car from Hertz 2 years ago. Showed up when scheduled to take possession, did the walk around and was free to go. Engine light came on right after we left town so we brought it to the nearest Hertz. They took the Sorrento, gave us a Durango with 8 miles on it. I remember looking at my friends thinking we’ve lucked out. We have a brand new car for the next week. The vacation was fantastic and we returned the Durango to our original pickup location a week later, on time. They asked us where the Sorrento was. We told them what happened and they said they have record of us renting a second vehicle not returning one and picking up another. We were like “why would we do that, it’s just 3 of us in the car?” She said “I don’t know why. People rent cars all the time. We are gonna need that Sorrento back or you will be charged for it.” It was almost surreal, like we were all staring at each other waiting for her to start laughing. She said she was going to have to involve the police. Standing there, we called the other Hertz. The woman who answered said she didn’t remember a Sorrento/Durango “swap out” and she was there all day the day we did it. This whole time, my friend who stood quiet, remembered he shot a video of us pulling away from the 2nd Hertz in the Durango saying goodbye to the “Sorry Sorrento”. We showed her the video, she said she’d look into it and that we could leave. Got a call saying they found the car on a airport backlot waiting to be “serviced for its issues”. She was sorry for all the inconvenience and thanked us for our business. To this day, I’m certain we would’ve either had to pay for the Sorrento or be in jail if we didn’t have that stupid little video. NEVER AGAIN HERTZ

I had a similar situation. I rented a midsize car for a month and they gave me a Toyota Corolla after 2 days the headlights started turning on and off at night so i drove to the nearest Hertz and they only had a Cadillac CTS with 140 miles on it so they gave it to me and i was also so happy because they said that it's for the price of the Corolla. I even liked the car so much that i decided to extend the rental for one more month by calling them and asking them to make sure the price won't change if i extend it for one more month and they guaranteed me it will be same price as the Corolla. Than when I took the car back they tried charging me $2100 for a luxury car instead of the $800 i was supposed to pay. I had to sit there speak with the manager it took 2 hours but they finally lowered the price back to $800 because i tricked them and told them that i am a reporter with channel 7 news and i will let everyone know about their scams on the next news broadcast and it worked they instantly lowered it and gave me a 3 day free rental of any car i would like on the lot and for fun i took the Dodge Challenger R/T for 3 days.

We picked it up the night before we left and packed the vehicle for a predawn departure. The next morning about 7 miles into our trip we noticed an engine warning light come on, so we went to Hertz and they replaced the vehicle and we departed Kentucky for Texas. A week later we return and find out we’ve been charged for both vehicles and they have no record of the first vehicle being returned. An hour later after showing photos of the first vehicle and the odometer, the incompetent employee finally decided to admit I returned the first vehicle and magically found the paperwork. It sounds like cars are rented through the individual insurance companies & there isn’t proper follow ups because cars are driven inter state, therefore it’s very difficult to track the issues. The policy insurance companies are failing to maintain communication with the car rental companies to keep up with the status. That’s why Hertz is filing car stolen reports. It’s got a big deal to do with the insurance companies not keeping the renters/policy holders up to date with Hertz. Hertz looks like the rental cars aren’t getting paid by the insurance companies and then chaos is happening. This means that if someone is renting a vehicle for longer terms, they should maintain communication with Hertz about their own status. Usually when dealing with insurance companies, they tell people it’s fine, all is good but it’s not even confirmed. This could be more of an insurance problem than a Hertz problem.

If it's after hours, call customer service and make sure that they have you down as having returned the vehicle and get a receipt emailed to you immediately. 4. Lastly, check with your credit card company to make sure your charges have stopped. If you keep a rental car over the allotted days, they continue to charge the card that they have on file. They tried to pull this crap on me in 1998 when I went to PA for my aunts funeral, I kept all my receipts, I had my lawyer contact them and they withdrew the charges so I didn't file suit; I had used their park and pay service it was relatively new then, I am guessing most of these people used this feature at the airport, I will never again use self check out with a rental car even if I'm running late for my flight, I'll roll the dice as it is far cheaper to catch a different flight than fight criminal charges.

No. They should pay her three times her lost annual income as compensation, then add that amount double as restitution for making a false accusation, considering the implications and the trauma they inflicted, then they should pay the same amount to the state she lives, where they made these false accusations.

A few years ago my husband and I rented a car in Florida from Thrifty which is a subsidiary of Hertz. 10 months later we were notified by our insurance company that they filed a claim that we totaled the car. Stating that the engine was seized due to water damage. I happened to have kept my receipt and was able to prove by the mileage at the time I returned the car was less than at the time of the claim, showing that the car was driven after I returned it. If I had not kept my receipt, we would have been liable for the damage to that car.

I will never rent a car from Hertz again. They accused us of damaging a car once but we had kept all of the paperwork stating that it was turned in without a scrap but they were trying to con us into giving them a large sum of money. I wrote them back showing evidence that the car was cleared of any damage…and, funny….never heard from them again. I am heartsick that this young mother has been robbed of precious time with her infant son. I hope that they will be held liable. Although, nothing can repay her the lost time with her children. Sad.
@clisaa69743 жыл бұрын
Same ! Also for us it was something underneath the car that was damaged they claimed . How something under a car gets damaged idk. But for the car we got it was just returned and they didn’t have time to probably check it when it was brought back before giving it to us.Thankfully we ended up not paying anything after a lot of back and forth . But still was a bit scary. And now I’m overly cautious when renting a car.

I've used Hertz on a few occasions and each time I've been overcharged because they claim the car was not returned on time. When I provided a time-stamped photo of when I delivered my vehicles they quickly refunded my money. I learned a costly lesson and have photographed all my rentals at pick-up and at delivery. These companies will scam as much as they can get away with it.

I've had the same issue with a couple of Uhauls. They will charge an extra day or even two because they're "too busy" to log in a return or will try to lie about circumstances. And if you insist on sticking around to get a return receipt, they will make sure you wait 1-2 hours to "teach you a lesson". I've learned the hard way that it's just better to pay the extra money for Penske to avoid the drama and dishonesty at Uhaul.

@@audreycumby1075 I live in Phoenix and had a motorcycle in Vegas so I rented a car for a day to drive up there and get it. After I dropped the rental off, I took an Uber to get to my bike. The bill for the rental was double so I called to complain about it (I rent cars from them all the time) and he wanted me to text him my Uber data as the Vegas location manager was lying about when it was returned. If I didn't take an Uber, they probably wouldn't have fixed the bill.

It’s not just Hertz. I had a friend rent from another car rental place and she was put into jail for the night because they had reported the car stolen and hadn’t cleared it when it was returned by the previous customer. This needs some legislative action.
