North America used to be the boss when it came to constructing tall buildings. But now, it’s lost that bragging right. David Begnaud reports from Los Angeles.

The US is building more skyscrapers than it ever has. The highest roof in the Western Hemisphere (Central Park Tower) is going up in New York City right now, as well as many other supertall buildings. Chicago, Philly and SF are buildings a lot (some supertalls) as well so I don't really know what this video is based on at all. NYC will match Dubai and pass Shanghai in 300+ meter building construction. In a way this video couldn't be farther from the truth.

The video spends lots of time on one building in LA and very little time answering the question. Essentially, super-tall/hyper-tall skyscrapers are vanity projects. Once, the US built them to show our economic ascendance. Then, US corporations built them to display their enormous wealth. Now, those impulses are more prevelant in up-and-coming cities in Asia and the Middle East.

I like how they address this issue as if it's a good thing for the economy, while in fact it is far from it. Construction of skyscrapers indicates demand, a society that builds skyscrapers out of demand indicate the high level of economic activity that is happening in the country, as well as its general optimistic perception of the nation's future development. A society that's supposed to be constantly renewing itself (e.g: United States) but is not doing so is rather in a alerting situation.

CRAZYc Well said. It *needs* to have a meaning. Basically those UAE countries are suffering from an inferiority complex because they have to build this 2000 ft. structures that are basically filled with hot air from like 75% up to the top of the building, such as the Burj Khalifa. They are being reckless and acting as a show-off. Because once the oil dries out in the UAE, Western Civilization will leave and let it to dry in the 150 degrees fahrenheit sun. Nobody wants to go there if the main attractions are able to find elsewhere.

Hey, Mixed Use Occupancy is NOT new. The John Hancock Building in Chicago (1100 feet/100 stories/1968) is a mixed use building. Buildings need to be economically viable in the industrial countries to be constructed. The supertall towers in the Mid East are not economically viable. The Arab oil barons just build and pay for what they want simply to impress, which is fine, but lets just be honest about it.
@alexandersuvorov2002
@alexandersuvorov2002 5 жыл бұрын
First of all, I think it's fair to acknowledge that US has lost its lead in "world's tallest" contest. Asia and Middle East are way ahead. It's just not on agenda anymore. The super-tall buildings are very expensive to build and rarely make sense for private ownership (e.g. Woolworth building, Chrysler building, Sears / Willis tower) due to large operational and maintenance costs that, in fact, only handful of tenants can afford. If you visit NYC you will see plenty of empty high-rises in down-town that stay almost completely dark at night. WTC Twin Towers and Empire State Building in NYC were government sponsored projects with a purpose to show-off US as economical superpower. So do Asian and Middle Eastern governments today, which in general is quite practical thing to do as at least these countries can amaze own population with fascinating breath-taking architecture. However, imho, it doesn't add to prestige of the country as it lacks innovation -- there's no "wow" factor anymore, especially considering that majority of these supertalls are designed, engineered and even constructed under supervision of US firms. The next "wow" factor will be something like colonization of Moon and Mars and US takes the lead in this by large margin.

Jude Marchisio Agree, however it is also important that it is useful and actually fully occupies the entire area within the building. The difference is in 1st world nations they do, but in countries like the UAE, Saudi Arabia and China they don't. Its because The Demand really isn't much anymore, But the main focus is because the US isn't in the process of Industrializing since the US has already gone thru that period and everything that is needed is already been applied, While Nations like China and the Middle East if you look it up, Shows that its still in the process of Industrializing to add the necessary requirements to be a World Superpower. Many roads are still being paved in China, Why else do you think Nail Houses are formerly most known there? Its because the amount of Industrialization paved roads in areas that were once just houses.

What we're really missing is the mid rise mixed use neighborhoods like in New York and New Jersey, those areas standing 4-7 stories tall with shops on the bottom and housing on top. Those mostly don't exist outside of the Eastern Seaboard and parts of a few cities. They're the most efficient in cost. Cheaper per unit than skyscrapers and low density, we should be building these in every metro area.

I would love to see my home city of Buffalo add some skyscrapers onto its still stagnant skyline. But our still sluggish economy and rather tepid real estate market makes such major development a major financial risk. In addition our tallest building of 40 floors is vacant and under new ownership with redevelopment plans coming up. We also have a huge, historic 19 story former hotel that is vacant and renovation and restoration has been a slow, financially painful process for the current owner who has no experience in owning a large piece of downtown real estate.

If you want all the city skylines in the USA to grow with new skyscrapers than we Americans are going to have to permanently abandon the inefficient, isolated, low rise suburban office parks and enclosed shopping malls along with the crappy budget hotels and the cookie cutter single family subdivisions on isolated cul de sacs. That is what is still slowing the growth and revitalization of most of our city centers. We Americans also need to embrace and support other modes of transportation and reduce our reliance on automobiles. Otherwise the USA is just going to keep falling behind and become less competitive in the global economy.

R. Pres. The United States does not need to be competitive in the global market! There is no reason for it. It should focus on self sufficiency instead. Why try keeping up with the Joneses anyways. Just be good and happy with what you have anyways. If the United States can not compete with others it is not a huge deal. Be good at what we can and not worry about the rest. You do not have to try and be the best at everything anyways. Just be good at certain things. Like making the best weapons and killing Technologies possible!!! Hahaha

I blame the FAA and certain airport locations.......... The city of Miami begged the FAA to bump up the height limit of their new towers. Yet the airport is still very close to downtown. So what is the real issue? Miami got the green light and investors and other construction companies keep building! But it is also very dense down here in southern Florida, so building vertical would make a lot of sense.

DOCTA FLOYD...Despite the FAA Miami has 9 approved skyscrapers over 1,000+ feet high in the downtown / Brickell district.... In the US Miami now ranks 3rd. in the total amount of skyscrapers over 500 feet / 152 meters tall after NYC & Chicago.

DoctaFloyd I might know why the FAA may not want to have tall buildings because of the airport I am a New Yorker and when the terror attacks happens in the wtc when they both collapse they destroyed things underneath such as train stations malls and the stock exchange. If they make a huge building in Miami near an airport that would be very risky because if an attack would of taken place and the building collapses the airport is the first thing to be destroyed because of the height of the building

mostly everyone talking bad about L.A don't even live in Los Angeles. this year is the first time i seen about 20 cranes all over downtown and holes everywhere preparing for new buildings and they are building a mall in downtown and a big stadium in downtown for LAFC. Don't forget an NFL stadium in inglewood for the Chargers and Rams and they are building a new train system for downtown L.A to San Francisco and soon to be finished in 2 or 3 years and ETC. The City may not be right by beach like NYC, Chicago and San Francisco but what we can compare L.A to is Mexico City with so much land all around and buildings and it will be better.

First of all half of episode brags about some BS which has nothing to do with building Skyscrapers. Hotels, malls, residential space and commercial space has nothing to do with height of building. I believe real reason is construction cost. It takes longer to deliver materials to higher floors, by the time you pump concrete to 200 floor day will be over. Building needs much stronger foundation. Safety is a concern too, higher you go windier it gets. more rigging is required for crane. Don't forget that most companies building skyscrapers are union companies and they pay prevailing wage. They don't get workers from Bangladesh for $300 a month like Emirates do.

NYC needs to stop building tall buildings at this point. The New York skyline is already beautiful in some places and a cluttered mess of high rises in others. They don't need almost all of Manhattan to be covered with them. They should start building in other big cities like Philadelphia or Houston. Philly already has a fair sized skyline and there are several buildings over 900ft, 800ft and 700ft. There are plans for the near future for a complex that contains a 1,200ft building (transit terminal tower) and another 1,095ft tall. There is also one under construction and nearing completion (comcast innovation and technology center) that will be 1,121ft tall.

The American Commerce Center in Philadelphia was a perfect example of a "mixed-use" skyscraper, with a mall, a movie theatre, a fitness center, restaurants, a four star hotel, Class A office space, an indoor patio, and on top, an observation deck plus connections to the Suburban Station concourse. It would've been completed in 2012, and would've had the title of America's tallest skyscraper until the Freedom Tower in NYC was completed, but damn, we can't even get a beautiful skyscraper built in Philadelphia!!! 😨

eh...so what. I feel like the skyscraper is a sort of 20th century thing. We in the US built most of the first ones and most of the biggest for their time. So...we've been there done that, i feel it doesn't really impress us anymore. Of course we'll still need them and they are being built but that cultural hunger to have the biggest, or to put some city 'on the map' isn't really a huge concern anymore.

Very tall skyscrapers is a matter of prestige than necessity. When they were initially made as office buildings businessmen wanted to be in proximity with other companies for transferring quickly documents and meet each other. Nowadays with the use of internet teleconferencing, emails, faxes, internet banking or even Social media buildings doesn't have to be concentrated in a small area and be very tall. That is a reason why residential skyscrapers are more popular than office skyscrapers. Companies want to be profitable and they don't care if their offices are at higher floors than other companies. However many wealthy people feel better if they literally live higher above all and look down everyone from their homes. Asia and Arabic countries are mimicking what west civilization was doing fifty years ago. Also iron skyscrapers can be constructed faster and with less money than concrete skyscrapers. However iron structures are more vulnerable to extreme temperatures than concrete buildings and after the fall of twin towers nobody wants to have the some fate.

I think in this day in age, its not all about having a skyline full of skyscrapers as beautiful as it might be. Its about efficiency and profit. The emipre state building initially was a failure because it was mostly unoccupied, no one used it. The US has already been through that phase, and it was for neccesity when we made these skyscrapers. Nowadays its not really neccessary.
