Trillions of cicadas as loud as lawnmowers emerge in 15 states after 17 years underground

Some of the most populated parts of the country are about to be invaded by trillions of insects called cicadas from a brood which swarms parts of 15 U.S. states every 17 years. Senior environmental correspondent Ben Tracy looks at what to expect.

I was in D.C. 17 years ago and one got in the house and when my cousin caught it, it literally screamed at the top of its lungs in panic like a pig being murdered!!! It was the most freakishly haunting noise I’ve ever heard to this day!

And my sister from Indiana described them and wrote about the "roar" in their part of the country....... soon afterward she and her husband and. 3 of their children died in an accident. So reading about the returning cicadas sends me down memory lane...... Precious years of memories...... Their surviving children are doing very well with their adoptive parents. What will 17 more years bring?

Insects and animals can be interesting entertaining and bothers some at the same time. But nature is a wonderful thing to see and watch. I am living in the Philippines right now and have been for 13 years. And here insect and some smaller creatures are abundant. From a lizard that most homes have 1 or 2 living in that sleep all day and wake at night. They are no threat to people but can be loud with there chatter... Toookoooo Toookoooo it sounds like but they do a good job of eating unwanted pests in the house. But I would say the frogs here are the most bother some of them all. When it rains heavey they come out at night millions of then and croak all night. And they are loud... They fill themselves with air. Puffed up some can be as large as a soccer ball. Them they croak loudly as they expelled the air. But at times it can be kind of soothing as you fall a sleep ...depending on there size and sex the tone and sound differs... A frog serenade The world is a wonderfully place

Fun fact: Each species of cicada emerges after a prime number of years, this number is different for different species, but the cycle always falls on a prime number of years. This is to minimize the chance of 2 species having their mating year fall on the same year, it just evolved to be that way.

Every species of periodical cicada, that is. There are " annual" cicadas that that emerge after 2-10 years. They are called "annual" because they don't all emerge at once, but a few every year in one location. There are only 7 species of "prime" year cicadas. Three 17-year ones, and three 13-year ones. They are matched up in pairs, believe it or not. Meaning one 17year species is closely related to one 13year species, more so than the other two 17year species. And one of the 13-year broods is actually made of two different sub-species, making 6-1/2, or 7 species. There are some 3000 different species, so the prime-year ones are actually the acception to the rule.

I grew up in Georgia and got so used to the sounds of the bugs outside at night in summer. I've lived in Massachusetts for the last over 20 years and it's so... quiet compared to Georgia. I mean, it's more urban where I live in Massachusetts, but even the sirens and trains pale in comparison to the bugs that would sound like a jungle on summer nights. Side note, the bug guy is adorable. I love to see people who truly have a passion get to grow up and live and work that passion as an adult.

I can understand both sides of the perspective on cicadas. On the one hand, they're lovely harmless bugs and rather adorable imo. On the other, large, unidentified buzzing thing flying past my peripheral vision is a surefire jumpscare. I LOVE cicadas! They are like little pets to me. I pick them up by their wings and place them on my shirt, arms, and shoulders - then they climb away until they fly off. I also don't mind the roaring sound they make. I'm looking forward to this.

This is history playing out. Get video and pictures of it. Make it a positive experience. And yes, they are edible; though I've not been brave enough to try them (look up recipes on the internet), they are an excellent source of protein. Predators are going to FEAST!!!

These things are harmless. We used to catch them as kids, tie some sewing thread around them and let them loose like kites. It was so much fun. Kids today don't have fun creative outdoor ideas like we used to.

I was living in Maryland the last time they were around (now live on the west coast). I remember driving between Baltimore and DC on I-95 with the window down and I could barely hear the automobiles on I-95 because the cicadas in the trees along the interstate were so much louder.

I was working in Washington DC 17 yrs ago.. I was sitting outside taking my break. Saw a lady with coffee in one hand and binders in her other hand.. I saw a cicada on her back it slowly climbed up to her hair then towards her ear next thing I know is her coffee and binders went flying! she was screaming and trying to flip her hair to get the cicada off! It was kinda funny lol

We have them here in Louisiana. I took a photo of the back of a cicada clenched to my front door one evening and on it's back it had what looked to be an image of a golden crown. Very unique. And the are a beautiful green and black here. I love to hear the sound of them in summer, though sometimes the noise they make collectively is so loud and in sync it is piercing to the ears.

I grew up in Lower Bucks County (a northern suburb of Philly) and I have always LOVED the sound of cicadas! They were how you knew it *was* summer. When I was 23, I moved to Seattle; that was 34 years ago and I would give anything to have some here in the NW! But I sure don't envy all of you having to pick all those crunchy, empty critter-casings off the trees and yard! Have fun! Try to enjoy them while they last, and most importantly, teach your KIDS to enjoy them!

Cidcadas have always been one of my favorite bugs. As a kid I remember collecting their empty skeleton shells found all over my parents backyard and being fascinated watching them emerge from their shells late during the summer nights.

I have found several empty shell carcasses that cicadas crawl out of before they get their wings. I still have them. Their feet are sharp.
