SSI recipients receive about $900 plus full EBT $200 plus Medicaid free healthcare plus subsidies for rent. They are usually alcoholics who haven’t worked at all or sporadically. This is just ridiculous. I worked about 40 years in total and get $1496 - Medicare $185. I am doing gig work (1099) so have self employment tax. I’m so tired.

COLA adjustments are based off the Q3 average inflation rate. (July + August + September divided by 3 = next years COLA adjustment. ) If there is 0% inflation then there is no COLA adjustment. COLA adjustments also apply to those getting VA disability benefits. Since 1960, the only two years with 0% inflation were 2009 and 2015. Inflation has always been a thing and always will be.

I work with homeless elderly and we have SO many elderly on the street because they are too old or disabled to work but only get around $1100 max per month from social security. Who is this reporter who did not take time to understand Social Security, benefits, and offsets? That 84-year-old woman who was a school principal is working two jobs? WHY? Her husband might have paid into the system but if her pension is larger than his retirement check was greater she is not entitled, which is fair because she didn’t pay into the system. That is not unfair and those people in her situation then and those retiring now in similar circumstances are told this at their retirement appointments. Now they want to play dumb like dumb KATY IN HER MISINFORMED REPORT. SS holdings are not taxed in your work check ...most SS recipients draw so little that we don't have to file a tax return. Pension withdrawals from your pay check are not taxed either ...if your pension is high enough ($25,000??) you will start to pay taxes at that level.

Right now, I will be penalized most of my Social Security because of my County and Teachers retirement which is not fair. I've paid my share. I've worked in the public sector my entire adult life. Why should I be penalized because I'm a teacher?

35 years ago when I started out as a small town cop I saw on my check stub that the village wasn't withholding social security. I went right over to city hall and asked them to fix it, which they reluctantly did.

Anybody can get Social Security, even Billionaires. It has nothing to do with income and everything with how much you paid into it. What you pay into it is redistributed to those who are collecting it. Those working today are paying those who are collecting it.

CBS did an extremely poor job in this story explaining the situation or even mentioning the provisions (WEP) they refer to. They are talking about people who spent part of their career in a private job and paid into social security and got their 40 credits to qualify for social security benefits. They also worked in a public job and earned a pension and the provision called WEP cuts their social security benefit by as much as 60% because they earned a public pension.

I would like to understand this better. I'm 51 and have pain into SS my entire adult life. I'm a nurse. I'd like to start working as a correctional nurse, but I'm not sure what would happen to the last 30 years of paying into SS since the correctional job is a federal job and id get a pension???

My step mom is a retired teacher. You wouldn’t believe the amount of money she has made through her pension. We are talking a huge lump sum of cash plus 10,000 a month pension! Yes some people need ss but there are many retired teachers who are very well off.

@@josephshields2922 I am in Tier 2 pension and there is a salary cap. My pension will not be the last 4 years of my salary. The salary cap is several thousands less than the salary that I am making when I do retire in 16 years, God willingly:(. For Tier 2 have to wait until I am 67 to collect my pension and I am 53 now. I got to stay healthy to get my pension at the age of 67.

How does a Fireman receive 85 or 90% of his salary as a pension, same with a police officer is at a disadvantage for not getting their Social Security? So, If the Fireman gets 80% of a $90,000 salary, that would it be $7,200 a month and they are in a disadvantage compared to a regular person who receives $1,400 a Month from Social Security? Why do not remove the pension government employees receive and put everybody on Social Security only, like most of the population? Give me a break!

What cop and fireman is getting 80-90 %of his salary? NYPD pension is now 50% after 25 years. Most will be retired not long after that, not many will get more than 70%. The states that don't pay into social security like Louisiana are paying less and probably requiring at least 30 years service. You know even less about SS. Nobody retires on Social Security alone. Are you kidding? Social Security wouldn't even pay the rent.

And now a cut and paste from the comptrollers site: The estimated total pay for a Retired Police Officer is $116,291 per year in the New York City at age 63. The problem is that even when they give a so call cost of living raise with SSI and SSDI they always raise the price of Medicare premiums. They should call it a Medicare premium allowance because that is all it really covers. I do not see why Medicare premiums have to go up every year that they give an increase in SSI and SSDI. We are already living on barely anything and increases the health insurances every year do not help our cost of living.

This is only for people who did pay into it by working other jobs. For example I know a teacher who first worked 15 years for a company ( non government) and paid into SS. She is currently not able to apply for SS because she became a teacher after that job. She should be able to apply because she DID pay into it.

This report is missing a lot of details and has nothing to do with discrimination. In many places public servants have a very generous pension plan and the participants do not pay into the Social Security program. Very normal and common. I wish I knew what this story was really about.

I put into social security prior to working only 13 years for my state and social security takes $587 per month out of my check. A person that paid the same into social security as me gets $587 more than me. I say that isn’t fair

Because of the Pension they don't get the SS even though they have enough work credits to qualify for a SS benefit. It also effects spouses. SS had tried to reduce my benefits because my husband has a pension. As it stands neither of us can never collect survivors benefits on behalf of the other. It's costs us at least $1000 a month and we are already officially POOR.

They say it "only effects 2.8 millions people..." They are only counting seniors who are currently collecting! I'm 43 and policed for 18 years. WEP and GPO will totally effect me in the future. The numbers are far greater than 2.8 million. You have to count all these employees who are 18 and older and working in govt. jobs covered by pensions. It's many more millions!

I had a friend that was a retired police officer. He was proud he did not have to pay into social Security. I don't believe that they don't know they can't get social Security. All you have to do is check your paycheck and when you do your taxes every year you are required to put that on your tax form. How do you not know? Now they have not paid in but want the benefits of paying in. I was not given a choice, they were.

There has been too much focus on passing this when the focus should be on guaranteeing annual increases to those who are 62 and older and receive either early retirement SS, regular SS, or disability social security that keeps pace with the national economy and inflation. Sorry SSI, but too many SSI recipients didn't "pay into the system" and don't have years of working.

You have to pay your 40 quarters into social security to be receive benefits. Most firefighters, police,teachers etc worked 2nd and 3rd jobs paying into the system. They just want what is owed to them.

This school principle she talks about, and other in the public sector have their own retirement plans. They cannot "double dip" and cross over to SS when a spouse dies. Is this wrong? You're the uninformed one. They get their pension and their SS but it's reduced by the WEP program. Up to 60% of what they earned is not paid to them. Men earn more than women. When the man dies the woman cannot afford expenses as she loses most of his pension if not all, if a second wife. The surviving spouse is I believe entitled to continue the higher paying SS benefits but it's never enough.

When they make a mistake, it will take them two years to correct it the way the system works, and you might be penalized all of the money that they overpaid you in two full years, to the point that they will pay you nothing until that is all paid back! @stacyewhite3037 If while you were a teacher, you paid into Social Security, this doesn't apply to you. You are in luck. Only if your state had a progran that replaces the Social Security mandate. My wife was a teacher and paid her Social Security payments while she was teaching.
