Must of been the first time Santa Cruz experienced harsh waves. Surly the wharf being built out of wood in 1914 had nothing to do with it.
@TheHypnotstCollector18 күн бұрын
I lived in Santa Cruz and mountain for 30 yrs and I Never saw waves. the light house has a surfing contest every year and those waves were special safe waves, maybe 3 ft tall, very gentle. Safe Surfing. Something has changed. I saw on news, some waves that looked like they were tall and very threatening, scary. The 110 year old pilings must have been overwhelmed by the sudden global world wide change in ocean behavior.
@paulespinoza199418 күн бұрын
Exactly, The ocean is one of the most powerful forces on this planet! Climate change has nothing to do with it, Hurricanes follow a roughly 25 year cycle of increased strength and landfall hits. A lot of people don’t remember Hurricane Camille in 1969 with 190mph sustained winds or The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 that had winds that had gusts approaching 250mph absolutely flattened the part of The Keys that took the direct hit. My point is too many people forget the history of storms and how extreme storms have existed on this planet going back long before mankind started recording these extreme events! I keep saying it and people look at me with bewilderment when I say The Indians visited the ocean but never built anything permanent because they knew the ocean was an unforgiving mistress. It’s funny how modern man can’t seem to grasp that rather obvious concept!!
@NeverSuspects18 күн бұрын
the wood was probably okay, the water limits the oxygen and light that the pile are exposed too and so they do not rot. it's probably erosion around the base or fastener failing so the deck pops off if the water does rise high enough or wind hits hard enough. Salty humid air causes exposed metals to corrode a bit.

A building on the end of the wharf was closed and was being torn down after damage last winter. That end of the wharf had its top surface removed for a $14 million restoration project. The tides and incoming storm were exceptional. It was a bad combination.

Lockdown created an epidemic of delayed maintenance. This portion of the pier was closed and in the process of a major restoration getting ready for the incredibly busy summer season.
@kennyboy01919 күн бұрын
It was actively undergoing maintenance when this happened. It's not easy to repair piers under buildings, they had to demolish the ones on this part of the wharf to do these repairs they were working on.
@ydne19 күн бұрын
I'd ask how many tons of seals were sheltering on the supports below that portion of the pier? I wonder if the Construction Engineers included the weight, of this popular under the pier tourist show of giant aquatic mammals, in their safety calculations?
@Imsierrabound19 күн бұрын
Must be some silly California regulation that prohibits the cleaning of the pilings that have way too much growth and subsequent drag and wave loading that led to this accident.
@wendyharbon729019 күн бұрын
The question will be now, how long before more of this pier structure, or could the rest of this pier Stucture fall into the sea too? Because of more storms and high waves, in the next few days or weeks, or from future storm weather and raising sea conditions, in the next few years too? Or will US Government Federal and State civil and structural engineers, will say the rest of the pier has to be taken down on safety grounds. Because the pier structure, has become just too weak and cannot stand up, to future storms or powerful high waves over 30 feet or higher too? Along with the cost of reinforcing the pier structure, is just too expensive, demolition is the only choice!
