Correspondent David Pogue joins Titanic enthusiasts who will happily pay a small fortune to ride in OceanGate's specially-designed submersible vehicle, equipped with 4K video cameras, to visit the remains of the luxury liner 13,000 feet beneath the North Atlantic (weather conditions permitting). 2:40 Well, that waiver says it all. That submersible was completely improvised. There were no redundancies or safety features, and it was terribly claustrophobic. Honestly, the thought of going that deep is in itself terrifying, but doing so in a plastic tube steered with a game control is simply crazy. As a bare minimum, a proper submersible ought to have a conventional ballast system, using water as ballast and compressed air to release it and float back to the surface. Two lines, one for communication and a cable to allow the mothership to recover the vehicle in case of malfunction ought to be mandatory. The Titanic is remembered not only because it was the largest and most luxurious ship in the world, but also because safety was not a priority. Corners were cut when it came to lifeboats and iceberg warnings, leading to tragedy. People should have learned the lessons from the Titanic, instead of turning it into a tourist attraction and making the same mistake all over again. If I were to visit the Titanic, safety would be the first thing on my mind. There's no way I would have boarded this craft which was almost put together with duct tape.
@mshepard2264
@mshepard2264 11 ай бұрын
Compressed air ballast cant be used that deep. The water pressure exceeds the pressure inside a compressed gas cylinder. You have to drop weights in an emergency. At the titanic the pressure is 5800 psi about. Most compressed gas is basically a liquid at that point.

Most research subs are pretty safe they dont use teathers because they can get caught on things. Also surface waves can push the ship around and yard on the cable which can be an issue. What is irregular about this sub is the composite tube. Also compared to others it is fairly big inside. The composite make me nervous. I cant think of any other subs that go that deep that use composite pressure vessels.

@@dreamkitty the best we can hope for at this point is that the pressure vessel failed catastrophically and the whole thing imploded, so they went out rather quickly. That's the most likely scenario in my opinon. Especially since they lost contact while descending and already at quite a depth. The only other alternatives are that they are either bobbing around somewhere on the surface, or deep underwater, just waiting until they run out of air. Even if by some miracle they actually made it back up to the surface, they cannot get out of the sub because it can only be opened from the outside. So unless they are found, they would still suffocate inside of that sub while bobbing on the surface.

@swizz152

Definitely a miracle and likely gave a false sense of security, while the vessel got weaker and weaker with each dive. From what I’ve read, carbon fiber, in this environment, degrades each dive. Where steel or titanium would be less likely to degrade so quickly.

If someone wants to throw a sub together with parts from their local DIY store and head to the bottom of the ocean on their own recognisance, that’s their choice. But a third party getting in this contraption (for that’s what it is), let alone commercially, let alone for 250k, is nuts. Taking huge risks in the name of science and discovery in the early 20c was necessary as the technology wasn’t there. But today we have the tech but you have to pay for it, a lot. This approach by Oceangate seems like a corner-cutting exercise to get the first commercial ‘Titanic’ fee paying sub into the market, whatever the risk. Comms with the surface using text messages? Sealing the hatch using bolts and battery operated drills? Control using an off-the-shelf games consol? Etc etc. WTF? It’s current disappearance speaks volumes about this lackadaisical approach to proper engineering and safety. Or it’s liability waiver certainly did.

Imagine, with every dive they make over 1 million. They have a ship to pay and a big crew. There is no money anymore to make the test-submarine a full functional sub. They want to earn money and dont lose it so they lied to everyone. The sub is crap and they lied to the rich customers. Noone can even imagine their horrible death down there and noone will find them. Maybe in some 10-15 years until another sub goes down.

The CEO said the quiet part out-loud. They invested all their money into the hull of the ship because that is the most mission critical part. They got involved with NASA and Boeing which generates good PR. Then they skimped on the rest: comms, infrastructure, controls and gave it a hyper-minimalist look without any hope of being debug-able, much less fixable 20,000 leagues under the sea.
