How Ozempic, other weight-loss drugs are "changing medicine"

Ozempic and other GLP-1 class medications are being proven beneficial for reducing cardiovascular risk and treating diabetes. But they also signal fullness to the brain and regulate blood sugar, allowing people to lose on average 10 to 20 percent of their body weight in the first year. For many of the roughly 74 percent of Americans who are overweight or obese, that's almost unimaginable. Correspondent Susan Spencer talks with doctors and patients about how these drugs work, and why they are considered life-changing (and even, for Wall Street analysts, a miracle).

The GLP-1 meds also work on stemming many addictions, not just food. They tend to reduce the dopemine effects. I've used them for a year. Along with losing 50lbs and dropping my BMI to the mid 20's, my blood pressure is well controlled without meds. I'm 72 and took 2 minutes per mile off my Half Marathon pace.

I think those that advocate for exclusive use for diabetes should also consider that weight is an outwardly indication of other life threatening conditions. Personally been o struggling with weight since the moment I hit puberty only to be diagnosed with PCOS and insulin resistance in adulthood. Further to struggling with obesity, We face ridicule from a very young age about our weight and the judgement that we over eat and don’t exercise which comes predominantly from people that didn’t develop the medication. The shortage of GLP-1’s is world wide and not caused by small population of celebrities. I think resentment of them skews our perception and understanding of the science and the statistics. When the medication starts working you gain the vitality to exercise, mood and outlook improves (depressing comments are replaced by compliments), health markers improve: the weight loss is a side effect that has overtaken the original indications

A little warning here: my sister was taking this for diabetes and developed pancreatitis and almost died. It was also disgusting that people cannot or are having trouble getting this drug for their diabetes and actually need it.

"probably a result of this drug" is hardly a large, double blinded study on the issue. At best it's a guest, a bad guess too for if it were true we'd see a lot of people with these symptoms and problems. We don't. That in and of itself should tell you that it's probably not this drug. Are there side effects that can affect people? Sure. All drugs have side effects. But you site one anedoatal case and the plural of anedoate is not data!

This is so irresponsible. First of all, no doctor would ever say "probably because of Ozempic", so that never happened. Second, and most important, you can't give out opinions as medical fact, because there are too many ignorant people that look for things and believe them. People have died after taking aspirin too, that doesn't mean death is a "side effect" of aspirin, or that aspirin kills. So tired of all the Dr. Googles out there thinking they know better than SCIENCE.

Congrats. But yours is a very atypical result. Lifestyle changes ARE important. And, in fact, the majority of ppl on these meds are doing lifestyle changes ALONGSIDE the meds. Because you get your best results that way. BUT, diet and exercise ALONE don’t work well enough for ppl with a lot of weight to lose. Ask a bunch of obese ppl… most of them have already TRIED lifestyle change to lose weight. Repeatedly. And, they either didn’t lose *enough* weight to resolve their obesity, OR they did but could not KEEP it off. 😭 And there are really good biological reasons why this is so. Your body doggedly DEFENDS the highest weight you’ve ever been at. If you lose a significant amt of weight, it will slow down your metabolism and increase your hunger. Because it thinks you’re *starving.* Just the way it works, sadly. 🤷‍♀️ So while *you* may’ve achieved fantastic results through lifestyle alone, that is NOT the average person’s experience. Which is why these meds can be REALLY helpful. They keep the body’s set-point defenses at bay, so that lifestyle changes can actually WORK WELL for almost anybody. 👍 I would call it the ‘democratization of weight-loss’. And a medical breakthrough that’s long overdue. 🌟

@@cloakster I didn’t know anything about diabetes II when I was first diagnosed approximately five years ago. I then did some reading and learned enough to get along. It’s a terrible disease. For example, once a year a diabetic has to get a “Diabetic Eye Exam” because diabetes can cause blindness. Also, a diabetic is urged to never walk barefoot because even a small cut on the bottom of a foot might never heal. It goes on and on. I don’t remember my first A1C but I imagine it was above 13 or so because I had to inject insulin into my bloodstream every day. I absolutely hated it. I went to my local hospital which sponsored a free diabetes class and this is just one of the interesting things I learned: A diabetic can eat anything they want as long as it’s not large amounts. During the time that I weighed 250 pounds I would swallow down two Whoppers, a medium fries, and a medium sugar drink (for a grand total of 1,639 calories) without batting an eye. I knew there was something that I had to do, and that was to eat less food. I had two goals in mind: To lose weight, and to lower my A1C. Unfortunately, what happened to me is exactly as you describe. The less I ate the hungrier I became. I wouldn’t exactly call it “starving”, but I was definitely hungry. After six months or more I weighed in at about 170 pounds but my doctor took me off insulin and replaced it will pills. But, I hated taking the pills too. At about this time I wondered if maybe I was eating the wrong stuff. Maybe I needed to eat healthier foods and food recommended for diabetics and pre-diabetics. So, I consulted with a Registered Nurse on what foods I need to be eating. She wrote the following on a Post-It Note which I still have on my refrigerator: LOW CARB / SUGAR - Meats - Eggs - Cheese - Nuts - Most Veggies (If you want a potato eat the skin w/ it). - Oils - Most Condiments / Spices Write down your meals w/ Blood Sugars! About halfway through the year 2023 I got a phone call from my doctor which became one of the most wonderful calls I’ve ever received. I’m paraphrasing now but basically they told me that I no longer had diabetes. They told me that I could stop taking my medication and stop checking my blood sugars. They finished the call by saying “Keep up the good work” and “We’re proud of you!” Of course, the truth is that I do still have diabetes. It’s not called “Pre-Diabetes”. It’s called “Diabetes controlled with Diet”. However, I will never be able to walk barefoot again. And, I’ll always have to get my eyes checked once a year. As of the end of October, 2023, my A1C was 4.5. I agree with you on almost all of your points, and I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I read your post at least four times, and I will read it again. I believe, as you do, that many, many people need a lifestyle change alongside the meds. But, I also believe people eat way too much food to begin with. Eat one Whopper instead of two. It’s hard to do at first, but before you know it you’ve trained your brain to accept it and it no longer hurts. Finally, cut it down to no Whoppers all. Again, your brain will figure it out and you will ultimately stop starving to death. As for Sugar. Oh, my! Go a year without sugar and then take a bite of chocolate pie. You won’t believe you ever ate sugar at all. Sugar and being too heavy is like eating Diabetes on a Stick. By the way, when I write No Sugar I mean as little sugar as possible because there’s sugar in almost everything.

My family struggled with weight and many are gone bc of a variety of health issues, diabetes, congestive heart failure, kidney failure, heart disease. How I wish they could have had this help. Yes, there are side effects. But, we are created individually, not the same. There is a hormone released in all of us. And many obese ppl, deal with it and it’s an insatiable appetite. I remember a Doctor talking about the hormone at a seminar in Atlanta that I attended & did some research on my own. I wish more Doctor would talk in general about how the body functions to dispel cruel comments about obesity. Unfortunately, ppl say horrible things about others bc they are ignorant to obesity.

Obesity is now considered a disease by the medical community. If it is, in fact, a disease, why wouldn’t it be acceptable to treat this disease with medication just as it is acceptable to treat diabetes with medication? I know this train of thought is contrary to how we are accustomed to thinking about obesity. Kinda similar to the pushback we gave to considering alcoholism a disease. While not every disease requires a prescription, if we consider them as diseases and not necessarily the result of human behavior, we might begin to change our inclination to fat-shame obese people who are looking for solutions to their conditions just as everyone else is.

What about the psychological reasons for obesity? When children experience a lack of positive emotions, they are more likely to feel depressed or turn to addictive behaviors as adults. They might seek comfort in eating because they can’t feel naturally happy. If adults faced trauma when they were young, they might still feel stressed from it. This stress can cause certain substances in the body to increase, which might stop muscles from using insulin properly & cause weight gain. Childhood trauma that isn’t dealt w/can make people more likely to be overweight, both now & in the future. It’s very important for doctors to understand & treat the real REASONS behind an adult’s weight gain (not just treat symptoms) which could be due to bad experiences in their childhood.

I'm glad my brain naturally produces the chemical that tells me you've had enough, stop. I love cheesecake, but even a single slice I can't eat, after the first three bites, it taste clawing. Part of the problem too is our lifestyle as Americans is less mobile, we sit a lot at desks spend more time pixel pushing than ever before. But its also the food, the food is genetically modified to offer more nutritional value per serving, especially with the high concentration of fats and sugars. When you combine that with a sedentary lifestyle, you end up with the high rates of obesity. I walk 15 mins to work every week day, and my job requires a lot of walking from building to building at the campus where I work. I prepare my own lunches, eat lots of vegetables, yet I still have a lot of weight. For others, I can only imagine.
@VernCrisler
@VernCrisler 4 ай бұрын
Most of these high calorie foods aren't "genetically" modified. They simply add sugar or fats to certain "snack" foods to make them taste better. The main problem is that these high calorie foods taste good but are not satiating -- unless you "eat the whole bag." Much better to eat meats, fruits, and vegetables for satiety.

What is truly unhealthy stem from the social determinants of health. Since most of us were born into the fat phobic matrix, even those of us who have managed to see it for what it is and does. It comes from sick and racist history. It results in damage on mental physical health from disordered eating and eating disorders. Forced starvation for weight loss in any form from a drug or otherwise is not the panacea were are told it is. This drug has a black box warning too. My insurance has rejected both Wegovy and Zepbound as requested by my doctor for weight loss. That's due to neither one being on the formulary list for Anthem Blue Cross Northern CA. My A1C numbers don't even qualify, as I'm at 6.1. I'm okay with that, because I've read too much about the side effects and that has scared me. However, my husband has been on Ozempic for a few months, has had no issues, and Medicare is paying for his coverage. His A1C met the numbers right before the FDA started making changes about these types of drugs. What's sad here is that at age 62 with good insurance (I pay half & the state of CA pays the other half), I still can't afford the $1K to $1.5K out of pocket cost. If I could, I still wouldn't purchase. Will lose the weight the old-fashioned way...
