Many things have changed in the 54 years since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled, in Loving v. Virginia, that laws banning interracial marriage are unconstitutional. Today, at least 19% of new marriages in America involve spouses from different ethnic or racial groups. But that doesn't mean that the difficulties they face have disappeared. Correspondent Rita Braver talks with couples whose relationships and children still draw uncomfortable conversations about racism within families across every social and economic level, and about how their love ultimately conquers all.
"CBS Sunday Morning" features stories on the arts, music, nature, entertainment, sports, history, science and Americana, and highlights unique human accomplishments and achievements. Check local listings for CBS Sunday Morning broadcast times.

My Mom and Dad must have been real rebels. My Mom, a full blooded Italian, and my Dad, who was black, white, and Indian, ( More rebel ancestors), got married 58 years ago, and had 4 mixed kids. Growing up in a 99% white city wasn’t too bad. I think because everyone knew us since we were born, and saw us grow up. I only had a few nasty things said to me. I just figured they were so filled with hate, that they were the ones with issues, not me.

My black in-law family show me true love. If I didn’t have them in my life I would never known what unconditional love is. I’m the only female in a family of five brothers. Mother, Sicilian and narcissistic -Father a racist Swede even hated the Italians. Also considered my mother’s family stupid. He was a Swedish covenant minister’s son. He passed his racist values down to four of his biological sons. Oldest brother, son of a Sicilian father. He and I were the oddballs. Me being female and my oldest brother full Sicilian. My mother didn’t like females. There are abusive stories that I don’t need to share that traumatized me. My husband’s family embraced me from day 1 and I finally felt loved and worthy of love. We’ve been together 16 years. Ours is an older marriage finding each other in our late 40’s. He and his family are love.

The right to marry whomever you choose, no matter the race, is a right that should be preserved no matter what. Loving V. Virginia is a landmark case that protects and allows for people to act on this right to the fullest. The federal government, state governments, local bureaucrats, or any power centers should never dictate how people choose to love, because that’s an unnatural barrier that goes against the the most natural part of a human, which is the heart. Ultimately, love is something that transcends beyond racial lines, and hinges upon the character of each partner. If your partners have amazing qualities and traits, race is utterly irrelevant.

@@ijumaainjabulo5983 It changes a lot, American history shows as much. The colonial class structure based on race relies on preserving exclusive rights and privileges by enforcing artificial lines of separation (e.g. the pseudo-science of "race"). We have three teenagers who are multi race, but I’m sure that most families with children have found the toxicity that has followed difficult. The hatred that has been spoken openly at all levels of government, attacks on civil rights and civil liberties of all peoples. The backlash has been real and so long as society has these issues families and children will be affected.

What you’ll also see is that is not the predominant mattering pattern. The problem is, is that some people fetishize mixed babies and get into IR relationships off of ego and wanting to prove the world wrong, instead of getting in a relationship for the right reasons. Like do they share similar values, do they have similar principles on finances, and do they have the same faith. Those 3 things are a biggest predictor of divorce. If those things align then absolutely, more power to you. However, people will sometimes ignore their partners negative characteristics at the determent of their own well being, just to prove the world their parents or whoever disagrees. Our Cultures are everything to us as humans, so if we can learn and appreciate our respected partners culture difference and vise versa, then we will have an easier time getting along within that relationship. that's why more Caucasian people with African American partners are learning to properly do their respected partners culturally different hair type or vise versa. The immigrant mixed race relationships with one being an american will experience something different than the one where both people are immigrants or first generation born Americans. Regardless of color. Likewise the gay relationship will experience something different . H Taking procreation out of the equation is no small thing. In America the white and black relationships are unique and the subject of intense debate. They are the archetype. Under societal and familial pressure plus legal barriers and death. THAT is the relationship that will answer the controversial questions, biased and otherwise, we all have. The dynamic cannot be found anywhere in the world. The dna of that young lady is the most unique and strong. white Americans know exactly who they are and black americans know who they are , even though we may not even know ourselves she is darling and she should be proud of her american background.
