I really love trains too, not sleeping trains really bc I literally need complete darkness and quiet to be able to sleep. I still take them when need be because I don’t fly (ecological reasons) so if I want to go anywhere further away from where I live it makes sense. In Europe the quality of overnight trains is vastly different from country to country, just recently I went to Sicily by train (the whole journey also took about 24 hours) and it was so different from the one in Japan. The rooms were for 4 people, so depending on how many people you are with you’ll have to sleep in a room with strangers. The train was incredibly fucking loud you wouldn’t even believe me. I started listening to lullabies in the middle of the night to at least have something pleasant to listen to and block out some of the noise. I will say it really wasn’t the best experience but it was completely fine and it’s always really interesting. On top of that it’s just so much better for the environment so I’ll take it. It also gives you a different feeling in my opinion. Like, you just travel more consciously and when you get to the place you want to go to you really arrive. Don’t know if you know what I mean.

@dogofchaos2 жыл бұрын
It's definitely the shinkansen. Faster, more quiet and overall more efficient. Meanwhile we can't really get anything like that in the EU because there's tremendous difference between the train tech of different countries. Having a bullet train here would be hard.
@destituteanddecadent91062 жыл бұрын
@@matthewcron8842 really? I'm quite surprised, considering Japan generally leans more in favor of trains for long distance transport, but I guess that's more bullet trains than sleepers. What are the differences between Amtrak and this one?
@matthewcron88422 жыл бұрын
@@destituteanddecadent9106 Yeah, this compared to the Amtrak sleeps and the long-distance trains(Which in the US are designated explicitly as trains that go over 750 miles, I don't know what that is in kilometers, and I accidentally deleted this comment the first time I wrote it, so I really don't want to look it up) kinda surprised me. Some differences I've seen are just how cramped and sorta dingy it was compared to Amtrak, which over the past few years has been upgrading everything, from its service to its equipment. They even just put out a thing saying that they are going to be buying a lot of new trainsets over the next few years. But some differences. First, the quality of the service just seems lacking compared to Amtrak. Like the bedrooms felt cramped, old, and uncomfortable, meanwhile, on Amtrak, the largest bedrooms can sleep up to 4 people, usually have a shower and toilet within them(Expect for roomettes), and come with a complementary meal service, and an attendant who will do a number of things, from delivering food, to even setting up the bed, and converting the room from the sorta chair and table setup it starts out with, to the sleeping arrangement. Meanwhile, the worst you can get on a long-distance or sleeper, and which is the standard for most of Amtrak is coach seating(Which depending on the train, can also come with various levels of service, and usually gives you access to the cafe car, which is where you get things like snacks, drinks, and more quickly prepared food). Meanwhile, the worst on this train was a pillow on a soft floor. And I thought that the train not really having a coach section was kinda weird. Do these slower sleepers in Japan have a coach section on them sometimes? Anyways, I also thought that the shower being something you had to reserver was kinda odd, since, on amtrak, the shower is in your bedroom on the train. And over all Amtrak more sells the experince rather than the transport with its sleepers and long-distance. You get to go where comfortably, with the service and the experience of riding the train with it. (Of the course the government, mainly local governments and representatives like long-distance trains more for connecting rural communities). In fact Amtrak advertises the experince on these trains more than anything else when it comes to long distance and sleepers. you get to see amazing landscapes(Some trains take multiple days to get from one terminus to the other), have a comforable time, and go to a lot of places(connects to many cities, and thruway bus can get you further, to a lot of national parks and cities outside the train's route). So yeah, I guess I was just surprised that Japan's slow sleepers, which are in a country that makes the US's passenger rail look like a model train set, are so dissapointing: old, dingy, not really all that reliable, hard to access, and with kind of poor service. Well Amtrak literally prides the experience and service you get riding on, with it being able to back it up to boot(As long as you are delayed by a freight train, or derail, that actually happened this year), it was just kind of surprising to see that Amtrak's long-distance trains were just so much better compared to this.

In the U.S., there's a large (and old) sleeper train that goes East/West accross most of the country. My daughter and I got a double room from Chicago to San Francisco, which was over a 50hr train ride (so 2 nights). But, all meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner, desert) were included, alcohol available, room was nice and spacious for a child and an adult, and there was a viewing car you could hang out in. Even though the train itself (Amtrak) is aging, we had an incredible experience, and it was one of the coolest ways to see so much of the U.S.'s natural sights. One of those things I'd recommend people try once.

You also receive points with each purchase that you can collect and use towards spends in the Bokksu Boutique). Very much recommended! The train should be re-branded The No-Sleeper Train, by the looks of things and I think I'm really glad that I don't plan to have a trip on it at any point. My other half would probably love it because he's a train-geek, but I'd probably do all the "Ooohhh"s and "Aaaahhh"s, then go for a bullet train and crash in a hotel at the other end of the journey or something. Really liked the video. If you were ever interested in doing a train video in the US, I'd recommend the California Zepher. San Francisco to Chicago and it takes about 3 days. Might be super boring, but it's supposed to be the most scenic route.

I love how Chris is like "This is a horrible idea" and then Connor gets him to join in anyway. He must have some masochistic streak or he just does it because he loves to complain. 😂
