I actually worked for the company that makes the capsules for the 9h capsule hotel chain. They used me for its design so tall people like myself (6'4") would fit in it. The 9hrs concepts doesn't lend itself to an experience like Books&Bed. The concept is 1hr of refreshment and relaxation, 7hrs of sleep, and 1hr of refreshing and relaxation, which makes for 9 hrs. I used to use it all the time when I had very early flights back to Europe. These hotels are often at airports where they are cheaper than airport hotels.

The one place I think a capsule hotel concept would be perfect is at an airport. Being able to rent a comfortable space to rest and get away from the noise and lights for a few hours at least sounds amazing.
@tdelioncourt12682 жыл бұрын
You're so right! I should be a thing. Having to spend a night at the airport is the worst, especially if you're alone with all of your stuff.
@ItsJustValHere2 жыл бұрын
Some airports (Madrid, for example) have a hotel inside, where you can rent a room for the night or for a few hours. I don't know how big they are, but I believe they are a small room. But a cheaper option like a capsule hotel would be nice too.
@Lightice12 жыл бұрын
A lot of airport hotels are pretty close to the experience; little rooms, hourly rates, often no windows... I used the 9 Hours at Narita during my last visit. The capsule itself was quite comfortable, but unfortunately there was an ever so slight jostle whenever someone climbed a nearby ladder which woke me up several times during the night. It was fun to try once and I'd do it again if I was on tight schedule, but not if there was a regular hotel room as an option.
@NShomebase2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you don't really get away from the noise at these things.

I was travelling 3 years ago in China and found exactly that, don't remember which airport it was, but it was like a few smart boxes lined up, kind of like 2x2x2 meters inside the terminal from which I was departing, which you could rent for like $5 an hour or something like that. They also had in the same airport some crazy premium seats you could rent while waiting for your flight which had massaging and an incorporated media system. I went to China dismissing it as a communist country and when I came back from there I was like nope, authoritarian for sure but no communism to be seen, and we're pretty effed if they keep pumping up the crazy technological stuff like what I've seen... seriously I don't even want to get started about their train and metro stations.

One things to note about the 9 hours style capsule hotel is that they may let you store big luggage behind the front desk. I did that at Nagoya airport one time coming in on a late flight. The capsule hotel was just a short walk away from baggage claim so it was really convenient. I feel like airports should be the biggest market for capsule hotels... Long layovers, early connections, business trips... Don't really understand why that isn't a thing in most of the world.

I really like capsule hotels. I find the snug space cozy (at least while it's big enough for me to sit), and I like the privacy (occasionally while traveling with friends, having a space to yourself is nice after a week or so sharing a room). From a convenience point of view, I wish good quality, affordable capsule hotels were an airport standard. I don't know how many times I've had a few hours wait on an airport and wished I could go somewhere for a nap/mental recharge.

I stayed at 9hrs for 1 night in Tokyo and they actually do have space for big luggage - they give you something akin to a bicycle lock to loop around the handle of your luggage to lock it to a metal bar underneath the row of small lockers. Each capsule is assigned to 1 locker. It was a bit of a hassle keeping track of the bike lock key and the locker key but for a first time capsule hotel experience it was a good one

I went to a capsule hotel that also had an onsen. It was amazing. You come into the hotel and in a separate room have to undress and wear a bathrobe/slippers/boxers that you can just take. Nobody is allowed to wear their normal clothes in the actual hotel area. Then you have a 2 story onsen, some rooms where you can do your hair/make-up and a relaxing room with big leather couches and pure darkness. The pods themselves are ok as well. It's such an awesome experience.

On both of my Japan visits Ive stayed in Book and Bed. First one was in Asakusa and I loved it. I think, there was a fan and a small safe inside the capsule as well. Im 156cm tall, so capsule hotels are actually pretty comfy for me. I was really suprised about it and loved the experience, also there actually were many books in English and the caffé breakfast was original. The second time, we stayed in a Book and Bed in Roppongi and it was a much worse experience. The newspaper mash walls and a "trendy" but pretty much a fire hazzard light-bulb-only lamps inside the capsules made me really nervous, doubled by the realisation we're on the 7th floor and theres no escape stairs, only a chair for 1 on the rope outside the windows. I had to search for the vaults and the noises... yes, every little creak could be heard and somehow I think they played the elevator music until really late which was annoying. One interesting thing was the view that was exactly like from Blade Runner.
@Mara_13372 жыл бұрын

When I was in Japan in 2018 I considered staying a night over at 9h during a quick stopover but, like Chris mentioned, a business hotel was just better for someone travelling. On the other hand I did stay at a "capsule" hotel in Kyoto called The Millennials which was super cool. The capsules were huge, sized to 1.5 persons. And they also had room under the bed to keep your stuff, You could even leave it during the day because the capsules could be locked. It also helped that the reception/lounge area was on the 8th floor overlooking the mountains. 10/10, would stay again
@TomMRF2 жыл бұрын
yeah, it really depends on the hotel. I actually stayed at Book & Bed myself and i think it was the worst of all of them. Very cramped, terrible sound isolation so you can hear other people turning in their sleep, and it was quite hot as well. Most capsule hotels I stayed at were fairly pleasant, at least way better than a regular youth hostel. First Cabin is a chain I can recommend. My best capsule experience was probably at Centurion Hotel Residential in Akasaka (Tokyo).
@RoganAzrael2 жыл бұрын
I also stayed at their Kyoto location and Tokyo location when I went in 2019. They were really nice since they were actual beds with the walls built to perfectly fit them. Hoping to go back in the fall/early next year and probably planning to stay there again.
