You have that ignate soul of a teacher,Nowadays i can proudly say i know all this by heart.I am a telecommunication technician and understand how these things work very well.I wish i had seen this video 3 or four years ago when the so called mechanics of Miami got me so frustrated that i decided to learn by myself,i feel i live in the outback, what a disaster..I have been through hell and back learning everything about scooters and motorcycles..I have had 28 motorcycles and scooters combined.I am 52..and nowadays when i watch videos of mechanics i can tell right away who is a part changer ,like the ones i ran away from and a real mechanic that makes perfect sense like you..I give you credit, the highest credit for your true knowledge and will to share it with others..You do not need advertizing because you do know what you are doing and saying, and i am very proud of you..Even though this is something i know very well i want to thank you for your time and dedication..If i had met a mechanic like you,i would not know what i know today..Nowadays i love this, but when you depend on yourself to fix your vehicles without knowing these things , like it happened to me.it gets really frustrating, now at the end of the road i feel i have won a battle..I see more than a few thumb downs on this video, and these are probably dudes who are jealous of your high IQ..Disregard these pigs that only think about eating their next meal..These are the dudes who unethically oppose people like you and me ,because we earn our living honestly with transparency and honesty..When you are good, and you are excellent, you can be showing it all,and yet you will become even a stronger magnet to attract great customers to your business, versus the shady dudes whose mechanical practices suck..i do not do this for a living and i have parts and tools most shops here in Miami do not have and thats embarrassing. For years i heard things from shop owners here that are too frustrating to mention publicly..One thing i do wanna say is, many mechanics would tell me that it would be better to buy a new engine than to fix anything in the gear box.I was not sure about that and one day i bought a 12 ton shop press and people laughed at me.Today after 12000 miles of hard riding i can tell you this.i bought all the ball bearings on line, and i rebuilt a gear box on a 150 cc from A to Z,i replaced every bearing by high quality japanese ones and this scooter glides, way much better than when i bought it brand new, totally smooth like a japanese scooter..i even replaced the ones in the swing arm as well as the gears..to make it even better i mix my own gear box oil using a viscosity chart and the results are amazing..but i have said enough and the truth is you are a great representation of what a mechanic should be in this great nation..Very few like you,you do make a difference, thumbs up and the very best for you,i feel sorry for pretentious mediocre part changers who live on scamming and lying to make a living

Thanks! Using this video and some wiring schematics I was able to replace a $271.90 part (32900-05210) (7 wire) with a $7.49 part (5 wire) and get my brother's Suzuki 125SP running again - after being dormant for about 30 years.

The original CDI would fire at low RPM (kick starting), but not higher RPMs (idle), so the bike would fire but never run for more than a few revolutions. We worked with the carburetor for way too long before we decided that it might not be getting spark at more than kick starting RPMs.

I have been working on JDs for a long long time and believe it or not this is my first ever experience with a 1969 JD SSI system. But thanks to Rolling Wrench it was a easy way to learn about this system. Great teacher and I found his point by point instructions spot on. Just made my job infinitely easier. I am an old guy and I never even saw on of these units until this past February when a customer asked me why it would run. Opened the hood and saw Solid State Ignition and I said s&@t where did this come from? LOL This must have been a year year engine. Thanks for the help.

this makes sense to me now. Recently got a GY6 150cc in a 'as parts' state. It had 2 CDI's with it and the one plugged in produced spark and ran but it refused to switch off with the key, the kill switch wire was in a permanent grounded state which means it should have never run. Problem was loop wire to the bike stand which I removed. I switched the CDI also to a known-good GY6 50cc one (which was smaller in size) and it ran perfectly with the on-off key. The scooter came with parts from also a pit bike. My conclusion is now that the 1 connected to the scooter on receiving it was a DC one and incorrect (likely off pit bike) and the other CDI an AC one. But the one off a 50cc works just fine anyway so ill stick with that!

I recently got a 1986 kaw Concourse and cannot get fire at the plugs.? Voltage from IGN to CDI box 12v or 9v for security, I have heard that there's a diode on IGN that reduce the voltage. Have juice at coils. It's the only one I can not seem to crank. Bumbing me out.

Diodes aren't used in a circuit to alter voltage, resistors are.Diodes conduct current in one direction only, like a one way valve.Voltage drop over a diode is usually 0.7 volts, unless it's a Zener diode.

I am working on a Honda 4TRX300 (that is the 4WD), circa 1996 or 97. The CDI is AC and it is as big as the wrong one (DC) seen in this video. Only one of the wires on the CDI is where and what this video says. Not saying he is wrong, just saying the 4trax is different. Black/Yellow striped: sends power from the CDI to the coil Dark green: ground Light green: is connected to the "reverse" gear switch (I assume it keeps CDI from sending power to the coil if gearing is in reverse). Black/white: is from the run (kill) switch on the handlebar ( and is where the video says it is on the CDI) Blue/yellow: is the signal wire from the pulser (trigger) Yellow: is the power source directly from the stator area. It Ts off one of the 3 yellow wires that sends current from the stator area to the regulator (where it gets changed to DC for charging the battery). The T is BEFORE the regulator, thus, we have an AC CDI.

Incredible video on CDI boxes and how they work. I have a 2010 Brute Force 750 and I was in the process of taking the battery out and before I could detach the battery terminals it slipped and made contact with the frame of the bike. I heard an electrical distortion as if a fuse had blown but all fuses are good and it appears the relays are ok too. Now when I turn the ignition to on the light switch doesn't work or the push start button won't work either and the fan immediately comes on. Also the FI is flashing codes 11, 12, and 14 which have nothing to do with my issue. I also tried bridging the solenoid to see if it would start. It will turn over but not crank. After unplugging the Fuel Pump relay I ran a jumper wire from the input directly to the positive battery terminal to see if the pump would run and it turned on instantly. Another interesting discovery was that when I hooked the battery up to a charger and combined it with the jumper wire to the battery charger positive terminal my electric headlights and push-start button was working again but the bike still won't start. It sounds like it wants to start but just simply continues to turn over. If anyone knows the reason or could pinpoint what the issue is feel free to share thanks.👍😎👌

@@jerrybigrig9475 No still no luck. I did discover today that for some strange reason my rear spark plug coil shuts down all electrical power to the ATV only when it's connected to the spark plug depending on how you move the coil. Under normal circumstances it's nothing really unusual about that but I'm not understanding why all the electrical power would shutdown because of a simple spark plug/coil connection. I don't have any spark from both coils. I never could of imagined that a battery could cause this much electrical damage and confusion.😳

Hey there rolling wrench, I'm hoping you can shed some light on a couple issues I'm having from 2 different upgrade parts I installed on my 2006 Honda CRF450X SuperMoto. The first one is my 100watt stator and reg/rectifier kit from TRAIL TECH. What I am confused with is the regulator/rectifier that came with this kit. There are 2 adjustable knobs on the top, one is for setting "delay" and the other is for "voltage". The only info I have on this is from the installation instruction sheet that came with the kit, and that consist of a single paragraph accompanied with a picture of the REG/REC under the title "adjusting REG/REC relay timer" and little red arrows pointing to the obvious, to the dial labeled "delay" and the other "voltage". Basically, all it says is "adjust delay dial cw to decrease relay active time", then of course ccw to increase relay active time, and literally nothing about the voltage dial. Can you help me with this? I mean what relay am I activating for delay time increase or decrease? The other upgrade is a VORTEX X10 CDI. Now like the TRAIL TECH installation sheet, the VORTEX install sheet has it's points of similar vagueness. It has to do with the bullet connecter end grey wire. All it says is; "now plug in the bullet end grey wire". And that's it, all the rest of the installation instructions were complete ie connect this to that, or route this wire from pin "x" to pin "y". So do you think you can help me out with where that grey wire plugs to? Thank you so much for your time efforts and help regarding this matter. Lee

I appreciate your very informative videos, mighty helpful. This is a new chapter for my wife and I, we still have a beautiful Goldwing but bad joints are making it hard to ride. Thank you, Stevie.

I have a falcon 250cc or venom gtx automatic motorcycle with a 250gy6 and it has a AC and a DC cdi. Haven't jumped into harness to know why yet but if I ride the bike before it's all the way warmed up, going down the road, the electrical tries to switch to a different setting and my headlights will go off then on for a min until I get it warmed up with rpm then it switches current I think because it will reset my neons that are directly connected to the battery. Everything is new and works great tho. Just found having both cdis crazy. I do need to upgrade a8 pole stator to my other bike tho.. 2 good new ones still not supplying enough power. Has to be it to because I've changed every single electrical thing in the bike. Every single thing. It's all working just not enough. Hope to find help somewhere about the 8 pole upgrade but not much that I've found on how to change the wires and cdi and rectifier for the white yellow green connector

Just to complicate things further, some ac boxes are also big ones, and some have those kill switch and ac feeds other way around. You notice that when the engine runs just fine with the new box but does not stop from the key or kill switch... I had to make an adapter that reverses the order for my spare box

My cdi box is wired like the AC in your drawing. (Only 1 ground). But indeed it’s a dc one since I get power when I turn the key to ACC mode. 150cc kandi go cart

You deserve a thousand likes Can you explain about the tubes and barrel of the environment that is tied behind the seat under the bakelite? It comes with a hose from the gasoline tank. If you don't know it, I will send you its name because I don't remember it now.

Your DC system won't have the pulse coils that are needed.

Very useful video! Thank you! So do I understood correctly, that ultimate sign of CDI type is: if scooter, moped/motorcycle doesn't have kill switch and you have to turn off engine by turning key CDI is DC, if you have kill switch to turn off the engine CDI is AC? Thank you for answer :)

That and the size and the wire configuration. You will have to check all 3 to confirm

So what are the down sides/ cautions to a performance CDI box? Increased maintenance schedule, wear out parts faster( which are most likely to wear our first)? Nothing is free... Especially in performance.

I just subscribed! Can you make a video to show how to wire a lifan 140cc with minimal wires used? I'm trying to simplify a 140cc sikk ped motor swap. 🤘😁 Also couldn't help but notice your cdi examples were almost the same wire configuration. I wonder how a 50cc cdi varies from say a 140cc. On some engines I've noticed that they appear different. Can I use just any cdi, or are they engine specific?
