You are correct…Basically from what I was told in Illinois you don’t have to have DOT #s unless your planning on crossing state lines and doing business else where, like you said u do. U just follow Illinois dot laws, That came directly from Springfield office and a DOT officer. He emailed me a whole list of stuff that’s very helpful because I’m thinking about starting a dumpster rental business in down state Illinois. Plus ive got my class A already so I don’t have to worry about all that either can run under 26001 or above, whichever one I find a good deal on will decide which route I go lol (I drive a semi now daily for a living hauling coal atm)

You will still need a DOT number as you are a commercial operation that is over 10,000lbs, you won’t need an MC number if you stay within your state and therefore will only operate as an intrastate business.
@chrisjones2252
@chrisjones2252 2 жыл бұрын
@@darran1621 Straight from FMCSA site. In general, a USDOT Number is required if you are operating in INTERSTATE commerce and meet the following criteria: You have vehicles that are over 10,000 lbs. (GVWR, GCWR, GVW or GCW) You transport between 9 and 15 passengers (including the driver) for compensation, whether direct or indirect You transport 16 or more passengers You haul hazardous materials So as long as you stay INTRASTATE meaning in VA and do not cross state lines they will not need DOT number. Not sure about VA state law requiring DOT. In MO you will need a DOT if your over 10K unless you are a sanitation business(exempt). The moment you haul gravel or topsoil or anything else for delivery other than trash to the dump in MO, you will need a federal DOT number and physical and random drug test along with the 3 road flares and/or triangles, fire extinguisher and fuses and all this has to be maintained in case of audit or traffic inspection even if your intrastate only. Also A MC number is needed: Straight from FMCSA site. In general, companies that do the following are required to have interstate Operating Authority (MC number) in addition to a DOT number: Transport passengers in interstate commerce (for a fee or other compensation, whether direct or indirect) Transport federally-regulated commodities owned by others or arranging for their transport, (for a fee or other compensation, in interstate commerce) An MC number is not needed even if doing interstate commerce if: Straight from FMCSA site. Who Does Not Need Authority(MC Number)? All of this also dictates the level of insurance/financial responsibilities a company must maintain. Carriers not required to have operating authority include: Private carriers (carriers that transport their own cargo) “For-hire" carriers that exclusively haul exempt commodities (cargo that is not federally regulated), meaning trash or refuge. Carriers that operate exclusively within a federally designated "commercial zone" that is exempt from interstate authority rules. A commercial zone is, for example, a geographic territory that includes multiple states bordering on a major metropolitan city, such as Virginia/Maryland/Washington, DC Again the moment you haul something for delivery like gravel or topsoil. You will need the MC number.

Another thing to consider if you have certain health conditions is the extra hassle that comes with a physical. If you have sleep apnea and need a CPAP machine you may be required to record your sleep patterns. Same goes for diabetics depending on the severity and/or need for insulin. You may be required to have a physical more often. Some states may require you to renew your license more often for certain endorsement's, when I had a school bus endorsement I had to renew my license every two years. After I dropped that endorsement I only had to go every 5 years.

in Arizona, where I operate. 18,001lbs gvwr combined requires a DOT number but not a CDL. I have a half ton Silverado at 7,000lbs pulling a 7,000 lbs trailer. at 14,000 lbs I'm under. My next upgrade will be a 14,000 lbs roll off trailer. I can upgraded to a 2500 at gvwr of 11,500lbs and have a combined gvwr of 25,500. Have to stay ahead of the business plan and regulations. I'll need a DOT number but not a CDL unless I mistakenly go with a 3500.

Great guide! - I just subscribed to the channel. You are not the first person to say that it is quite easy and quick to complete the basic CDL. Then it turns out that all the combinations related to derating, too weak a truck, etc. were unnecessary. For my part, I will also add that - as far as I know correctly - every truck (regardless of whether it tows a trailer or not) whose GVWR exceeds 10K and is used for earning money must have a USDOT marking and the driver must have a medical examination, fire extinguishers, other equipment etc. Also, I once made a list of states that were more favorable to regulations (I just don't remember if it was for the DOT designation or the 10K trailer GVWR limit in interstate commerce ;-). And these states were: 1) New Mexico 2) North Dakota 3) South Dakota 4) Arkansas 5) Louisiana 6) Illinois (I guess this has changed) 7) Tennessee 8) Mississippi 9)Virginia 10) Rhode Island 11)Vermont 12) New Hampshire But this information requires confirmation because it was obtained some time ago and I am not sure about all sources.

I work for DOT and can say this guy is giving good information. On the remark on "im not hauling the garbage to sell it", we word it a certain way. If you are hauling something that results in revenue, then yes thats commerce, therefore DOT requirement with crossing state lines. I will add, In Illinois, they are weighing the individual section to determine if you are over the tire rating not the individual gvwr. It doesnt happen very often, but we do see examples where we need to do that. Its usually for guys putting ALL of their weight on select axles and or running cheaper trailer home tires on a HD gooseneck. Also some people will put aftermarket low profile rim and tires on their power unit. Those tire and rim combos can alot of times be rated for much less weight. What was not mentioned,(its a fairly new trend) is all these weights, GVWR, tire ratings, ect are now turning a not at fault accident to a partial at fault thanks to lawyers. They will argue that being under the limits could have had you stop faster, avoid the accident, blah blah lawyer lingo. Yup they will check your weights and GVWR if it saves their client from a 100% at fault on a big money lawsuit.

Your learning weights. Don’t forget axle weights and the bridging formula. Now we’re going really throw your mind through a loop, learn hours of service. A Cdl, dot physical, dot number, and the major kicker for most is the yearly expense of commercial insurance for running Interstate. Crossing state lines, your going to need a MC number. then your going to need to fallow HOS. After that, then dot inspection on truck and trailer. Oh I forgot to add ifta and your 2290’s. I drive long haul otr in the 48. We’ve argued for years, everyone needs to be held to the standard truck drivers are held at. Make it equal.

I absolutely agree with this. Truckers go through so much bullshit. Meanwhile mamaw and papaw can home in their 40ft rv and drive cross country with no issue. Or farmer Joe can hop in his fully loaded down tractor trailer and drive the roads as long as he isnt more than100 miles from his farm and has farm tags. It's bullshit that truckers are held to such a ridiculously strict standard and are constantly harrased compared to everyone else on the road. I have a lot of respect for you truck drivers! I just drive class B trucks with a fraction of the weight semis are hauling and It has opened up my eyes alot to the bullshit class A drivers have to put up with.

The 10k relates to the difference between CDL A or CDL B. B means your tow vehicle weighs 26,001 or more. If you use that tow rig to pull a trailer 10,001+ with it, you need an A. In your case you have your A, you're good. But when you renew your trailer registration you could also derate it to 12k to stay non CDL.

It’s a colossal pain in the butt. I have a triaxle Mack rolloff truck at 82000 pound gvwr. You should see the stuff we have to deal with. Once we get out of Massachusetts we have to adhere to the federal bridge law. Without overweight permits we get restricted to 54,000 gross weight. To qualify for overweight permits we have to pay the registration fees for 77000 pounds. Overweight stickers for each state are $1000 each over and above the registration fees so in total just in registration and overweight permits it costs roughly $3500. I could go on but you get it

Clarification.. Even if your trailer weighs 10,001lbs the only way you need a CDL is if your vehicle combination GVRW is over 26,001lbs AND you're pulling a trailer over 10,000 lbs would call for a Class A CDL. A Class B CDL would be needed if your GVWR is over 26,001 AND your trailer is under 10,000 lbs. The thing about the law is you have to pay attention to the "AND" & "OR" in whats written. So if my GVWR is under 26,000 lbs, even if my trailer GVWR is over 10,001 lbs, I wouldn't need a CDL because I'm not hitting both of the requirements. Hence the word AND rather than OR. Thats what makes up the elements of the law. Great Channel Bro! Sending positive vibes from Texas.

It’s this easy, look at what your vehicle can carry and then what your trailer can carry, add your total. Now subtract the weight of your vehicle and trailer and that’s what you can carry. Word to the wise, safety chains and other things that you carry normally counts against the amount you can haul. When in doubt, run your rig across the CAT scales. As for the DOT numbers, you can put them on any vehicle that you are using for commercial use. I hope this is helpful. Stay safe my friend 🧐

All the CDL stuff I am seeing is pertaining to Big Rigs. I am wanting to just use my 3/4-ton truck and a gooseneck trailer. Is there someplace to see videos for this setup. You video is great. With the truck I have with a 11350 GVWR and a 14,000 GVWR trailer and that adding up to 25,350 I shouldn't need my CDL ?

Any commercial entity that is over 10,000lbs needs a DOT number, if you cross state lines you will also need an MC number. CDL is anything that is 26,001 or more, if your 26,001 and your trailer is 10,001 you need a class A, if yoir setup is 26,001 but your trailer is 10,000 then you need a class B. If your setup is 26,000 or under no CDL is needed so you can have a ram 3500 at 14,000 and a trailer at 12,000 and be at 26,000 GCWR. Only CA requires a CDL for a trailer 10,000 or more. All other states state that your combination must exceed 26,000 for the trailer weight to be a factor. Never exceed your GAWR or tire ratings.

And keep your combined truck trailer under 26001 lb. Good to go. If you put the trailer and truck under a LLC or business when you register them then that effects you needing a CDL/dot. Even if you de-rate your trailer to 10,000lbs and your truck is under 16,000lbs you're still legally forced to keep your trailer, dumpster, and material you're dumping under 10,000 lbs. If the trailer is 3,000lbs and you've got a small 10 yard dumpster that's only 3,000 lbs, your maximum legal material weight is only 2 tons. Unless i'm misunderstanding something, that seems pretty pointless. You've basically handicapped yourself to only be able to haul partially full 10 yard dumpsters. It seems like the only realistic options for hauling dumpsters legally are getting a CDL or getting a heavy duty hook lift truck with a GVW of at least 22,000 lbs that's powerful enough to haul the larger dumpsters and more than 3 tons of material.

I guess his state only requires a written test to get your type a license. That doesn’t make sense. A tractor trailer type a license in my state makes you go through your airbrake, endorsement test, combination, test, and general knowledge test and then you have to go to a type a tractor trailer, driving academy, schooling to teach you How to do a 90° alley dock in reverse parking and parallel Parking skills with the tractor and trailer. You cannot just take a written test and get your type a license which is the most prestigious license that allows you to drive a vehicle over 26,000 pounds and be able to drive a 53 foot container attached to your tractor. I don’t think it’s that simple where this guy lives to get your type a license. Like he stated.
@rollingops
@rollingops Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure why you wouldn't be able to get a basic class A combination. Everything else is just endorsements. But again, the requirements before testing have changed. So when you initially get your test, it may require you to do it all at once in your state. But im not sure. Now that the classroom time is required, I would suggest doing it all at once anyway. Might as well! Either way, it WAS that easy for me. I didn't take classroom, because it wasn't required. I studied for the most "prestigious test" on my own, which hasn't changed despite the added classroom requirements. Passed, did the drivers portion. Didn't get an air brake cert, and still just use my pickup. So no "lying" here. Edit: Also, I still had to pass the driving portion, but I just didn't have to go to a school for it to be taught. Someone from the dmv issued the test where I did the driving requirements you speak of. But I used my truck and trailer, because it met the requirements of a class A truck without air brakes.
