Super Mario Maker 2 features a lot of stuff that wasn’t in the original Super Mario Maker. Claws, night themes, clear conditions, a super mario 3D world theme and much much more. Super Mario Maker 2 is going to allow us to build many different types of levels. But how do we build a good stage? What makes a Super Mario Maker level fun to play in the first place, and how are we able to replicate this? In this video we are going to investigate this eternal question. We will take a closer look at how the stages in traditional mario games are structured, we will try to replicate this structure by building our own small Super Mario Maker stage, and we will discuss tons of different facets of mario levels.

It won't work. Mario Maker 2 is going to be loaded with garbage. Even more so than the original due to the Switch's wider appeal. I wish Nintendo gave a damn about the huge problems with discovery and filtering.

Back in the original Mario maker days I also made traditional levels, but it didnt get that popular because MM was coming to an end (2018). It didnt reach anyone because nobody was on. Just dont spam level IDs everywhere, that can just make it worse and is annoying to some people.

Jake Hudson: Stuff that you are trying to reach or that can impede your progress. If you want a player to jump to a certain platform to progress, make sure they can actually see that platform. If they can't, then they won't know where to go. Likewise, if you want a player to have to avoid a thwomp, make sure they can see the thwomp. Otherwise, they won't know to look out for it. Since secrets are supposed to be hidden, it's okay to put them offscreen. But it's good have some sort of indication that a secret is there. A hole in the ceiling, a far-off platform, a trail of coins, etc. would all be good ways to guide observant players to offscreen secrets.

I think pick-a-path levels would be okay if the wrong paths didn't immediately kill the player and there was a way to get back to the choices. Unfortunately most people just add death boxes and/or softlocks to all the wrong paths, which only leads to frustration.

8:20 To go along with this point, Red Hot Elevator Ride starts Mario in a small room where the lava begins to rise. It's not that hard to escape the lava and reach the pipe, but this room is useful for showing that rising lava will be a prominent feature in the rest of the level. Then, we enter the room with the hot and presumably red elevator. As there is no other platform in the area, we hop onto the device and get a quick explanation of how the elevator works (by tilting the controller). We're now given a small space to figure out how to handle the controls before moving on the the hazards. It's a simple concept, but it's rather effective at conveying level mechanics. Because of this, little introduction segments like these are strongly recommended to keep the player in the know.

A couple tips of my own: 1: place the ground as rectangles, generally. It’s ok to add detail, but most Mario games do this to make platforming easier and more digestible. 2: adding low ceilings makes players feel confined. It’s ok if that’s the intent, but do understand that even if it doesn’t actually affect gameplay, it subconsciously limits their decisions. 3: check how easily you can backtrack in your level. If players can’t do this, then every decision is like burning a bridge.

Great video! I really appreciate that you show examples of issues in your example stage and how to fix them. If I may, I'd like to add that I feel like challenges and breather spaces are also defined by their PENALTIES FOR FAILURE and their REWARDS FOR SUCCESS. For failing to make a jump, solve a puzzle, etc. there's a variety of different consequences you can execute in SMM: Lose time (standard fail a jump, so you're back on the ground and have to jump again) Miss a missable bonus area (say you had to make a jump on a paratroopa perfectly to get to an optional room) Miss a collectable (if you've got a bunch of Miss a powerup (block is positioned so a powerup falls into the abyss if not grabbed in time) Take damage (any sort of enemy or projectile hits you) Lose a life (Bottomless pit, crushing) Whereas completing a section gives us various rewards: Make progress towards level completion Gain a collectable Gain a powerup Find a bonus area It's the contrast and severity of these that seems to separate the breathing spaces from the challenge spaces!

I never really considered how well structured the mainline Mario levels are. I think what really clicked was when he was going over the ending with an easy challenge around the main element and I thought back to all the Mario games I've played in my life and realized that almost every flagpole is reached using the main element of the stage. So cool, thanks Ceave I'll try to keep this in mind when making levels in the new game!

This reminded me of an observation I had about fun games; they tend to have different gimmicks in each level, so while you're familiar with the controls and such, you're dealing with new obstacles. Sounds obvious, but a lot of games forget to do that and end up with some levels or missions feeling like something you've already done.
