The car shifter boot is a cover made out of vinyl or leather to protect the gear stick. It is considered important because the shifting mechanisms are in that portion covered with grease.Dust and other extraneous agents could interfere the gear assembly causing damage.
As we can see the shift boot is attached to a center plastic piece which is part of the main center Nissan Tiida console.

What made you choose the direction of stretch prior to placing your pattern down? It had some significance or you would not have shown it.

Interesting question for a keen eye! The main reason is to help giving shape the vinyl selvage all around the steel wire frame while stretching it a little. Thanks for watching the video!

Where can I get the long thin straight weights you are using? I have bar weights but they are 3” wide and unwieldy with small projects like a gear shift boot.

Steel or iron can be found at any metals store. They come in different sizes and thickness. A tiny lifting weight could also be useful

I can only recommend the car seat course, that's the only one I have , not sure about the others. There are two free steering wheel courses, you could get an idea.
