On my second contego in 5 years, lost one. It’s a quite heavy knife, I’ve come to appreciate feeling it on me compared to lighter knives. I do carry my spyderco military when I want something a bit lighter. It’s great being able to toss out the heavy blade on the contego just by flicking it

Glass breakers are for safety glass, and the tip of the blade isn't going to get it done and would be much more dangerous to attempt than actually using the glass breaker. If you're a first responder I understand the need otherwise I agree with the annoyance, at least make the glass breaker screw in and removable for the rest of us

Thanks for the slicing tests. They provide important information with all the chunky blades today. Being able to slice is a huge bonus for me -- strange, I know.

810 contego is probably my favorite folder and i totally though that if the bad guy "engineer" from Prometheus carried edc blade it would be the contego

Very good review.. I've almost bought the 810 several times but I'm not a fan of big knives.. BM's QC still isn't right.. I've bought 4 recently and am sending 2 back to BM.. I've owned at least a dozen BM's...The 810 is easily one of the best values for money.. I'm always on the lookout for someone in an emergency situation that needs their windshield broken.. So far I've found nothing but I'll keep looking..

Here it is 2 years later and yes Benchmade quality control still sucks. I got my Contego with blade off center and after two weeks of light use the blade has side to side play in it. Even after fixing the blade centering it doesn’t seem to want to stay centered.

That glass breaker would brake your windshield if I hit it in the corner of it with the absolute slightest of pressure. The tip of the blade your hand would probably go threw it. I'm not crazy about a glass braker on my knife actually don't own a knife that has one. But I've used them before and extremely effective

The Spyderco has that extra bit of length to compensate for when the tip snaps off.

I've always wanted a Contego, but I'll probably opt for the Knifeworks exclusive M390 variant. There is less gimping, blue G10, and no glass breaker. I would have liked to try Benchmade's heat treat of CPM-M4, but I can live without it.

I was surprised at the glaring issue with that screw. I have seen minor issues with benchmade but nothing so sloppy. It makes me wonder if the company you purchased from had refurbished it. If not, someone at benchmade was really derelict in their duties. That is unacceptable even for an entry level knife. My 940-1 came perfect from benchmade but my valet had a machine line left in the blade tang which i sanded away. It kind of acted like a tiny speed bump when opening but nothing severe to affect it opening properly. I purchased them both from local authorized retailer and i didnt notice the issue with the valet until later in the week.

I've never been a big Spyderco fan. This is based entirely on my opinion of their looks. In this case however, I am in full agreement with you & would without hesitation choose the Spyderco Police over this Benchmade 810 Contego. It is difficult to get past the handle & price on that Benchmade.

I'm not the biggest benchmade fan and I normally go for midtec knives. But I love m4 and I know benchmade knows how to heat treat a blade.

You should try out the Spyderco Resilience. Chinese made and cheap but strangely usefull. FFG blade of cheap steel but gets wicked sharp.

+Harry Wright 940. The 0450 is a little hick behind the edge and has a really sensitive lockbar. The 0452 looks awesome but its uuuuuuge! The 940 is my favorite. Mines on loan to a buddy, but I miss it terribly!

Harry Wright my 450 didn't fit my hand well, so I sold it. I've handled a 452 and it's sweet, but a bit too big for me to edc. I own a 940 and it's a really fun knife. I'd pick it. Probably best to buy it in person as they do have QC issues as Pete mentions in the video. I was able to fix my blade play but not my blade centering, although it doesn't affect function. If you're willing to take it apart and tinker, I'd definitely grab the 940. Benchmade QC is baffling to me for what they charge.

I have a few knife stores nearby and have bought and handled many good knives.. I have XL hands and the ZT 0450 cramps my hand into the handle.. The 0452 has excellent quality and is a great knife but as they said, it's huge..I love my BM 940's but their QC pisses me off..I have 3 versions and all are overpriced but I somehow still love them...

benchmade really pisses me off. you drop 200$ it better be squared away. i bought the new presidio and it had horrendous lock stick. send it back bought another spyderco.
