Anyone who listened to this and is not moved, well I feel sorry for them. Dave captured a raw soul stripped down, layed bare. Their guitars and his voice send you there. Moves me to tears every time I hear it. Simply amazing.

Probably the most under appreciated albums of all time. The entire album is a spiritual experience, not even in a religious kind of way. They like transport you into a different realm or something. The feelings I have when I listen to the two of them together is unlike any other music or artists in the business. They are truly one of a kind. When people think of Dave they immediately think of DMB, when in reality it is almost a completely different genre than when it’s just Dave and Tim. I don’t even like DMB, but Dave and Tim hold a special piece of my heart. I wish you’d guys do a reaction to “The Maker” “Some Devil” or “Sister”. You’ll have the same reaction. Constant chills

As a teen in the 90s, my parents introduced me to the Dave Matthews Band by dragging me to a show. I was an untrustworthy middle schooler and couldn't be left home alone, lets just say that. The show changed my life. It was so ridiculously hot that day I nearly passed out from dehydration but besides that, I found something that day that changed my life. Much like people do with God. Im atheist, but you could say that the music, the lyrics, the story behind Dave's life, everything that this band has been about has opened my mind, my world, to different kinds of music, people, ways of life, cultures. They sparked a deep interest learning about black history here as well as in Africa and learning about apartheid. It introduced me to the idea of venturing out of comfort zones and drenching myself in diversity. I have to admit that I judged you when I first started watching the video. As the song progressed, as did my thoughts. Im atheist, Im liberal, Im not patriotic, I had so many excuses to judge you....but listening to this band has taught me to remain open, and loving, and always willing to learn. Thank you for opening your hearts and minds to this song, Im trying my best to hold judgement of others and keep my heart and mind open to things I typically reject or judge. I hope you both get to see the band live some day. What is a song you would ask me to listen to to learn about you?

There is a duality to the song, Dave battled alcoholism, and the references also reminiscent of someone begging to get over an addiction alongside the religious imagery. "The wine that is drinking me' seems very much an alcoholism reference. But that isn't just what it is about, he's really talking about his whole life.

Appreciate you reacting to this song. However you interpret it, it's a powerful song, this being the best version of it. And it's 16 years old. I've watched it many, many times. Each time I get goosebumps watching Dave walk out and scan the entire room over and over. It's like he's in awe of where he is. And interestingly, he was a bartender as he established this band. 10/10.

Dave Matthews Band changed my life in many ways.i grew up in a relatively well off family. The summer of 2001 I had tix for a 2 night stand in Foxboro MA. I wasa waiter, and bartender. About a week before the show my boss says, “ Dude you’re going to hate me but I need you to cancel your dmb plans. I know you can’t ever miss a chance to see Dave but… I’m way booked up it’s prom weekend blah blah blah.” I told him he was trippin and he got me with the, “Don’t show up next week if you go to the shows!” So I went, and he fired me. So in need of money a friend who was a manager at a fine dining restaurant that was:30 minutes from my house (on a good day) and told me I could work for him till found something else. I began working there and the hostess was amazing. We worked together on 9/11 and sort of bonded That day. Anyway, we have been married since 2003 and our wedding song was “crush” by dmb. I’ve struggled with alcoholism and opioid use most of my adult life until about 7 years ago. The song “#41’ saved my life .

Just in case it's not mentioned in any other comments below, I hope you know that this performance is from a double Blu ray DVD titled Dave Mathews & Tim Reynolds Live from Radio City Music Hall. This DVD was/is considered to be one of the best recordings (highest fidelity) ever produced. As you stated, listening on headphones really let's the audio shine. I hope you get a chance to watch the entire performance sometime with headphones or a really good sound system. I actually own a copy but I have no idea where it is and I haven't watched it in years, but as I recall it's quite long, possibly 4 hours even? Anyway, there are sure to be other cuts that you will also love. In my opinion, Dave Matthew's & Tim Reynolds as a duo are better than they are together in the Dave Matthew's Band. Check it out & see if you agree. Thanks for posting this.

I was tricked I just saw the title Bartender.I thought it was the song Bartender by Danny Boone from Rehab.I did enjoy the song
@brettranatza68175 ай бұрын
Alright, I'm a mega Dave Matthews Band fan, and I don't think the bartender represents God, but rather it could be any bartender. It's the drink. Dave now has one brother, one sister, and mother only now after his father died from lung cancer when Dave was 10, and his eldest sister (Anne) was murdered by her husband. First verse is to his brother (Peter) to not forget him and hold his memory dear even with his faults even if he dies before he is an old man. Second verse, is to his Sister (Jane) to not be angry at him if he dies at a younger age then he should have. Last verse is to his mum (Val) that if all of his success and wealth leads him down the wrong path, kick him in the pants and press the reset button on his soul. The easiest way to not think such heavy thoughts is to just go have some drinks, but it doesn't last.
@danield45473 ай бұрын
I agree with almost everything you said. I also think the last chorus where he is comparing the wine he is drinking (or that is drinking him) to the wine that strung Judas is almost bargaining. “It’s not my fault, it’s the drink”
