Imbolc celebrates the beginning of Spring here in Ireland. It is one of the eight Fire Festivals and lets us know that the Light has returned and is growing stronger. Already, here in the west of Ireland there is a long stretch in the evenings. The days are getting longer and I am keen to get back outside and work in my garden. Imbolc, midwinter, the most difficult time of year. Stay strong Brothers and Sisters for harder times are coming in Spring and we must hold fast. Nature will prevail!

Imbolc is NOT "midwinter"! Traditionally, the winter solstice is considered midwinter. Astronomically, it's the first day of winter, but in traditional societies it represented the depths of the season because the fall chores would have concluded in early November (Samhain). Though the roughest days (as far as provisions) are ahead, Imbolc (lamb's milk) is the beginning of spring for the same reason.

My brother took his life on Feb. 1. He wrote about rituals and magic in his book. I would like to think he was trying to purify his spirit by leaving a body that was tormented by choosing this day. I have not been able to find any information on people in the past who have chosen this date for such a thing to do. I’m very sad.

I've always been drawn to Bridget since I was a child and my Irish mother would tell me about her. Here in the north east of USA it is more like mid winter but the light is returning and I sit by the woodstove planning my garden and starting some seeds.
