As someone who's secretly counted The X Factor as one of his annual guilty pleasures for God only knows how long, X Factor: Celebrity failed for all the reasons that the recent seasons have, and why the US version did. In my opinion, it's a format thing. At its peak, X Factor had a dependably interesting format, from the arena auditions, the bootcamp, the eliminations/callbacks that resulted in interesting new groups being formed, and judges' houses, where acts would find out whether they made it to live shows or not. We went on journeys with a lot of the contestants. And the combination of novelty acts, dramatic singoffs and controversial results kept the show more interesting than most singing shows of its type. But then Simon got rid of the usual Bootcamp, then he re-added it but only aired a few minutes of it. Then he did all these other changes, some good (Six Chair Challenge) but most bad (the flash vote, the lifeline vote, the ridiculous bit of having two categories perform on Saturday, two perform on Sunday, and then having a sing-off between the two highest vote-getters of each group for some nebulous prize, rather than the more dramatic bottom two sing-off and judge votes). Then he added Golden Buzzers to chase the viral video moments that BGT/AGT have gotten, and safe seats that exempted acts from the public vote. I don't necessarily think the show would return to its former glory if it went back to its original, less overproduced/twisty format, but I think it would at least have a better shot than the clumsy mess of a show we have now. Thanks for coming to my vapid TED Talk on an utterly ridiculous reality singing show.
@RatzaChewy5 жыл бұрын
The Six Chair challenge was nerfed as soon as contestants were called back and forced to do sing-offs. Once they did that, there was no reason why the judges couldn't just fill up the chairs and cut and change afterwards, which they all did. It's needlessly cruel.
@LimitedTimeRoman5 жыл бұрын
@@RatzaChewy Agreed. I think it's an obnoxious byproduct of Simon being the boss. He basically changes rules on the fly and alters the format as he goes, which he probably thinks is exciting but is really just frustrating. He has no one to rein him in. So he goes for whatever will produce the most manufactured drama. And while I'm not at all surprised that he thinks this way, I would think he'd look at the ratings and see that people, by and large, aren't loving it.

@addiegorden14305 жыл бұрын
these are great observations tbh. for the past couple of years i’ve been thinking about why it’s gone downhill so much and the conclusion i came to was basically that simon cowell is desperately chasing the success of acts from the past without realising what actually made those acts succeed. the main pattern i noticed with that was his obsession with creating bands from solo acts. after it worked ridiculously well with one direction he did it again the next year with little mix and then a couple years later with fifth harmony. but it only really worked those three times and now he’s not really making much money off of any of those acts. there hasn’t been any mega success off of the x factor in years and he’s just been trying to plug new acts into a formula that people got tired of really quickly.

Another big problem is X Factor used to be aimed at the 16-30 age group primarily. Now our generation stream rather than watch TV. If we wanted to watch singers, we can just find someone on KZbin singing a cover of a song. It's also really obvious the show is a fix. Producers go on KZbin/Instagram to find people who can already sing and invite them to auditions. A lot of the 'bad acts' are just actors paid to come and audition. I think the biggest reason is what you stated about losing the story. Even Strictly, which doesn't change its format at any point during its 12 week run - 15 celebrities perform a dance with a professional dancer, one leaves. The difference is that we're still taken on a story. We see them learning the dance, developing relationships with the other contestants. That's the key reason Strictly/Bake Off are still doing so well - it's a competition, but they don't pit the contestants against each other. All the contestants, on both shows, root for each other. People don't like to watch divisive drama, which is what Simon develops X factor (&, steadily, BGT) into. Simon/ITV started changing the shows around 2012-2014 to achieve more viral hits. But viral hits aren't planned, and Simon hasn't realised this yet
@ennythinn5 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting observation regarding streaming. When the TV talent show boom started most of us didn't have much of an insight into the record industry. Seeing ordinary people become super famous overnight was a big deal because that simply didn't happen. Today we are much more aware of how the recording industry and also reality TV works. Even Simon seemed to stop trying to hide that fact this year, blatenly choosing novelty over talent, and not even trying to obscure it in some way. Coupled with the fact that getting a high charting hit is much harder these days, the narrative of being a superstar is fading more and more.

I'll be blunt, Simon Cowell was the main reason this was painful to watch. He never stuck to his own rules and kept trying to add new ones. He never felt like a judge on here, he contributed nothing fun to the show. More often than not, he refused to vote. When he voted, he'd vote to keep the act with less potential in. He made the show boring and when he invited celebrities on to do the show, that's the last thing you want it to be. If it comes back again, he shouldn't be a judge if this is how he wants to treat the show.
@GreenLight54445 жыл бұрын
The problem is that Simon has started to realise the ratings are failing and people have lost interest in the show so he’s trying to make things different in a way he thinks will make a change for the better. However the whole thing just feels corny. For me I felt extremely concerned watching Simon because he looks horrific. He’s trying to make himself younger. And you know I would have really preferred it if they used Sharon or Cheryl or tulisa as the female judge. Personally I find Nicole repulsive and just so annoying. Poor Louis just seems to have lost interest and the thing they did to say Louis grew up watching ricki lake when in reality she’s 16 years younger than him was very distasteful and seriously just a poke at the fact that Louis is old. Personally everything I love about the show is gone now. Dermot has just lost interest and he knows the show has gone to shit. He’s called Simon out on it various times ON AIR. for me Simon needs to pack up shop now. It had a great run but if it goes on any longer the legacy of the show will be destroyed

There was a Chinese show with a similar concept: 8 celebrity singers face off with one being eliminated every 2 rounds (of course there's one where an eliminated contestant comes back though). This show was interesting, however, in that ever round had a specific genre of music they had to perform (the first two were rock and folk, for example) and contestants were judged on how well they did the genre. Also, the 8 judges were each a person close to a contestant, i.e. mentor, manager, people with musical experience. While the show itself was kind of iffy, I feel that just the concept to more interesting than what we got with this X factor installment. Edit: The name is 全能星战, if you want to look it up

In korea there is a competition show for celebrities as well, the difference is that the narrative is that these celebs are "failing" in the industry. And they are on their journey to prove themselves to the public. So there is still a sort of journey of the hero?

It's funny you mention Kevin McHale having an advantage for being on a musical show but mention how Vinnie Jones is disadvantaged, yet he was a main character on Galavant, a musical show. Then again he sang the least out of all the main cast, but I will always remember "Love Makes the World Brand New"

I’m so glad someone did a video on this, my mum and sister both watched the entire series and I just couldn’t stomach watching it without cringing. It was absolute shambles, Simon changed the rules so many times, Vinnie so obviously wanted to go out yet Simon kept him in, even after he sunk like a drunk Irishman in a bar in the Sing Off. Nicole was kind of inappropriate to Try Star and Louis, practically rubbing her boobs all over them in some episodes. And Louis and Simon are so out of touch now, they constantly made claims about something being ‘the biggest song of the year’ EVERY SONG, how can something be the biggest song of the year when u just proclaimed something else was??? To top it all off, the celebrities felt vapid and empty, the only genuinely charismatic ones were Max and Harvey, and occasionally Try Star,, SMH TLDR: Judges are out of touch and irrelevant, Simon changed the rules multiple times, and contestants who had no talent, were left in the show until last minute for drama

It was an absolute pathetic shambles. 2 weeks in a row Simon dropped talented lower fame celebs like Olivia Olsen and Johnny Labey in favour of a terrible singer like Martin Bashir. It would've been great to see those lesser big names like Olivia and Johnny grow week on week and I don't think their prior fame would have tainted them having a new music/ performing career. Plus, each week we knew what to expect. Max and Harvey would sing some fun teenybop song and a flashmob would appear on stage with them, Megan McKenna would sing a forlorn ballad she wrote, Vinnie would sing a ska song and a flashmob would appear, V5 would sing a Latina mashup, Jennie The Chaser would wear some ridiculous dress and sing some empowering power ballad and Try Star would gyrate and sing something sexy. It was boring and predictable.

One weird thing about the final performances (the only part I watched, out of morbid curiosity) was that about 90% of them were consistently flat. I don’t know if that was a failure of their earpiece feedback or even a lack of vocal coaching, but the fact that it was almost all of them was wild Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if none of them had received much (if any) coaching, which just adds to what this video says about the lack of a journey

This is how to fix xfactor, this is my notes right here! I’ve been trying to contact syco or Simon and don’t know how tho. Note: All notes are for the regular X factor and all star vs newbies unless noted otherwise. 1. After you do All-stars in 2019, You can do an All star vs Newbies, the people love new blood as well as nostalgia a mixture of both will bring viewers back, the “oldies” at home defending their favorites and the “newbies” defending theirs, it will get families to pick favorites to win on both sides adult and children will play along. 2. Fans much prefer the Live audience as apposed to a silent room, so the best studio for XFactor I think is the LH2 Studios in London, W3. With the same design as the one from Celebrity XFactor live shows, you get a mixture of just the right amount, not to many people but still with an audience. 3. Do themes, I’ve noticed shows do well with themes people associate with. Like on strictly, big brother and etc.... you can possibly include the audience at homes opinion on a theme they’d like to see for certain weeks, for example since Halloween is coming up, it would be cool to have a Halloween theme, (producers decision) but later into the competition like Battles, have a certain theme going not entirely similar, but a theme that represents at home or one that represents beach and stuff, and that’s what the audience picks. 4. I’ve noticed a lot of shows have a gimmick , spinning chairs, buzzer, 4 chairs, and etc... I think people are tired of the 4 judge format without some gimmick, I have thought long and hard and you can use the XFactor X as the gimmick it is a sense of familiarity and uses something new. What this X does is one of 3 things during the audition phase, each judge can only choose once and wisely and so can the host. - Save an act that got 3 no’s but you don’t think is worthy to be sent to live shows. - Send them straight to live shows if they are super good. - that person despite whatever group they’re in, a judge can press that button and coach them, if they are that good. - Duet with a celebrity during coaches round. - safety from elimination during Real world Round. Once one is taken, another judge can’t use it, that makes these buttons all the more special. Place this x in front of the judges like the buzzer or in the middle like the golden buzzer. Also make the desk look nice as well during lives and auditions. A desk that will make people know it’s the X factor. During live shows, the special X which will be for sure placed in the middle, if a judge presses this button that person going home will vs someone a judge picks they can battle it out, each equating to 30 seconds each, whoever does well a judge can pick to replace. This would be kinda brutal but it’s up to you to incorporate that, or you can use the button to save someone who went home. 5. Here is a potential episode line up, idk itv schedule so we’d probably have to rearrange this but Auditions (7 episodes) Coach (4 episodes) Note: while coaching have famous celebrities help along with the judges to get them to that great point. Also the contestants will have to stay in a house for 4 weeks with no leaving so they can all get to know each other, and the audience can know them as well, it would feature less of you judges more on contestants but you are still prominent, during these two weeks, audiences love to know the people. (Replace judges houses) The real world (4 episodes) Note: this will put each group in real life situations, one episode for each group within the X factor setting and have them perform in situations of 1 person, a group of elderly’s, big group of young teens, and etc... the contestants will choose their style and etc and perform to their best abilities. If they score well with the chosen audience and the judges beloved they did well in this setting, they will advance, if others fail they will go home. Battle (4 episodes) Note: now that they have experience this should be hard, Have the contestants then battle it out to see who’s vocal ability is stronger and more sufficient for the lives, people will get a better grasp at who they want than each Individual performance. This would replace 6 chair. (This is where the audience themes would be more prominent) Live shows semi (4 episodes including episode results) Audience votes and that special X in this round can save someone who got sent home and do the 3 chairs which will save people from getting voted. Finale (2 épisodes including results) see who the winner is. This will show who the strongest and best X Factor is. Total 27 episodes. 6. The judges panel is what people will tune into see, and their are many people I’d love to be on that panel. But a for sure Popular panel i see on social media that people love is, You, Louis, Nicole and Sharon, people would also love Paula and Randy with you again which could bring back people for sure so I don’t know, you can probably have Paula and Randy help you out during coaching. Panel is up to you it would do good either way. Dermot can remain host. 7. include the audience, instead of just voting, like I stated before they pick the settings for the real world and the themes as well, then people would tune In to see what got picked. 8. To keep x factor fresh every year, keep it like this schedule. - Regular X Factor - X factor All stars - X factor all stars vs newbies - Celebrity X factor And cycle through. Then there is something new each time. I believe this is a sure fire way to boost ratings on a great show. So in conclusion here is the layout and synopsis for each show. Regular X Factor: ✅ Auditions 1- 7: Hopefuls from around the World come and audition to see if they’ll make it to the next round. A judge presses their Special X! Coaching 8-10: The judges and special celebrity guest help the hopefuls in their own studio house rise up to be the best, while they all get to know each other as well as the audience knowing them. Real world 11-14: Each week each judge will represent their group in a setting the public chose and see if they can handle the pressure of the musical business world. Battles 15-17: Contestants battle each other directly to see who is worthy of going through to semi finals. Judges pick the best. Semi finals and results 18-25: have the remaking contestants battle it live, the best will be saved in the 3 chairs, one who deserves to stay but sent home will be saved by the special X during results. Finale: 26-27: the best battle it out and the winner is revealed. X-Factor All Stars: ✅ Auditions: 1-4 have them audition and they can still use the special X. Songwriting round/ song coach: 5-8 each group will write a song and perform at the battles, they get to know each other and love a temporary celebrity life to see if they can handle pressures like paparazzi and etc. Battles: 9-12 the contestants battle it out. (Audience will choose whether they want Battles or 6 chair each week including theme) Semi finals including results 13-18 Special X can save a person from going home as well as the 3 chairs used. Finals including results. 19-20 X-Factor All stars vs Newbies: ✅ Special x is used for this rendition as well. Auditions: 1-6 (3 weeks old, 3 weeks new) Coach: 7-9 Judges pick a strong returning contestant to coach a newbie. This will take place one a house of 3 weeks. Songwriting/ real world: 10-13 Oldie will partner with newbie and make a duet in that same category, they will a perform in a real world within chosen by audience. Battles or 6 chair: 14-15 Either 6 chair or battle gets chosen by people as well as theme. Semi finals: 16-22 they battle it out with the c feature being sued as well as 3 chair. Finale: winner is revealed. Celebrity X- Factor: ✅ Auditions 1-2: celebrities who left the limelight come back and see who is the best. Musical Round 3-4: each will be placed in a singing situation in their respective careers to their vocal range and liking. Live shows 5-6: results of who the winner is. This version will include nothing special it is a back to basics, just with the added setting. So that is my pitch that I’d be happy to give to you, all I wanted

Little Mix .... last good thing that came out of this shit show. Honestly it's so outdated nowadays. In the 2000s shows like this were all the rage but today it's just boring I guess. Someone wrote that Simon Cowell wants fast food talent- that's exactly what it is. Fast, disposable, unoriginal- a quick cashcrab.

Am I the only one who remembers that this was not their first attempt at a celebrity version of The X Factor. Ok, this one looks like that mostly stuck to the same formula while the earlier attempt skipped straight into the live shows. But I was definitely surprised that they were trying it again when it was announced. Also worth noting, Jenny Ryan has a Folk band (also did Folk covers of other types of music too). I actually saw her perform at a Bolton Food and Drink Festival a few months before her X Factor debut.

I think this show did this because of the instant success of the Masked Singer which shows celebrities wearing masks and we the audience have to wait until they get unmasked to find out who they actually are. That show is successful because they make us wait to see who is on the show to keep us guessing on who is behind the masks on the show.

I am convinced Celebrity X Factor was created as a vehicle for Megan McKenna to sign a record deal. She's been doing country singing in the US and so the show would make a decent way for her to expand into the UK market.
@sammygreen0665 жыл бұрын
For me, problem one was that half the acts were desperate for a music career whilst half were just there for fun. Second problem was that because there were only 3 judges and we still have the shite mentor system, mentors voted in favour of their act no matter how untalented so the final decision of who to boot off came down to one person every week. The third problem was that Simon kept sending more talented more desperate acts home in order to save untalented singers whom he thought would get his show more views. Olivia going home after like the first week was heartbreaking. Then sending home Kevin to save Vinnie who wanted to step aside anyway... taking the piss. Capitalist Simon is his own downfall

I usually always watch the clips of the show on KZbin because I’m in America and it doesn’t show here but this is the first season ever that I chose not to watch. I’m very late to this but I go to the same school that Virginia went to (the ginger one in the band) and everyone was so supportive. Her face was plastered across the school and teachers shouldn’t stop talking about how well she was doing. I was put into a 6th form class once back in December and they were all talking about how Virginia, with her new found fame, had completely distanced herself from her friends and was never showing up for school. The teacher had mentioned that she had emailed her regarding her school work and she hadn’t got any reply. Fame twists people and one day, as her band isn’t hyped anymore and has a stupid name, she’s going to regret doing that.

The whole appeal of the show is that it *was* a very competitive yet easy way of making it famous without having to start off small you could get the publicity of a million people in a heartbeat with just 1 performance. People were desperate to win and the stakes were incredibly high. This just stinks of desperation. It's cheap, lazy and worst of all false.
