When you do watch the Kenshiro fight, he's the main character from the 1980s anime/manga "Fist of the North Star." Fist of the North Star (1983) is a Shonen Jump staple predating the Dragon Ball manga (1984). Fist of the North Star inflenced the creation of JoJo: Bizarre Adventure and Berserk. Early JoJo's artstyle was influenced by the strong muscular characters of Fist of the North Star. Fist of the North Star takes inspiration from the Mad Max movie series, with Kenshiro being modeled off of Mel Gibson's character Max from the movie.

That character is shamelessly a rip off of Cell's design for the looks (I think it was done intentionally too) but the plot surrounding him is something else ENTIRELY. Very deep. Even his name holds meaning, which is why I won't be saying it here, incase you decide to pick up the series. Wouldn't want to spoil it.

The first "fight" is Yusuke Urameshi and Kazuma Kuabara from YuYu Hakusho. Lani is a big fan of YuYu Hakusho and did an abridged version of it a long time ago, the original dub actually holds up and is one my personal favorites.

The GS ball was originally a mysterious ball that couldnt be opened. It was gunna have Celebi the time traveling pokemon in it, but then they had the Celebi movie come out so they didnt do it. So after they spent tons of episodes carrying around this mysterious pokeball and had lots of situations around it, they deliver it to a resercher and they never talk about it again. So this great mystery was never resolved.

7:50 I don't remember the name of the attack, but in the Street Fighter games that's pretty much how it looks; Dark Ryu or Akuma would move towards the enemy, the game would cut to black and you hear a bunch of random punches, then Dark Ryu or Akuma would pose like Cell did. Cell's "WHAT JUST HAPPENED" is a reference to how fans still don't know wtf happens during that attack.

The first short features an amazing 90s anime called Yu Yu Hakusho. Yusuke Urameshi works as a detective that battles demons and bad humans with his friend/rival Kazuma Kuwabara. Saying anything further would be spoilers, but it has one of the best English dubs in existence. If you watch it, I highly suggest you do so in the dub, it's hilarious and all the VAs kill in their roles.

"one of the best English dubs in existence" You can tell that, partway through the first episode, the voice actors said "you know, maybe we should play loose with the dialogue, just say what feels natural for the characters". And it really pays off. Here's an example. At the end of the first episode, when Yusuke is asking Botan (I paraphrase), "has there ever been something you didn't realize, that was obvious to everyone else?" ... that whole exchange is nothing like the Japanese version, where Yusuke simply agrees to do the thing. But having Yusuke ask it like that, it just feels so much more natural.

Fun fact--the most commonly discussed opponent for them if they were to appear in Death Battle is the Pilaf Gang from Dragon Ball! Xander Mobus, their Deadpool, is also Jimmy Firecracker. And many, MANY others, like Joker from Persona 5, the announcer/Master Hand from Smash Bros, and my personal favorite, Stocke from Radiant Historia (you would not have heard of this game it is rather obscure unless you're a JRPG fan). Oh one thing--before you react to the Scooby Doo vs Courage Death Battle, know that the ending summation spoils a battle from years ago so go watch Chuck Norris vs Segata Sanshiro first.

Yes, there were only 3 tournaments... They covered about 2/3rds of the episodes of the series though:D Even fewer normal episodes if you remove the obvious filler arcs. The first tournament was 2-5 episodes depending on how you define the tournament., the second lasted from episode 26-65 and then the last one was 104-111. So not quite as many as I thought, only about 50/112 episodes were actually tournaments. There were a couple more sections that were darn near tournaments, just not the same type. The psychics arc was similar to some styles of tournaments, which would add eps 68-84, but it is not a tournament in the sense most people use the word for these so take it or leave it. Either 50/112 or 67/112 episodes are tournaments.

Should probably clarify that this is _only_ likely in the first generation of Pokémon games, if that. Later generations the formula for catching ensures that Master Balls will always work, and even later generations just bypass the catch rate entirely and make it an automatic catch.
