@Dalek7823

A few extra observations about this spider (given that I co-exist with them in my house): 1. They seem to be attracted to vinegar. There I am, eating my chips and one will happily make its way across the room (usually over the ceiling) and land on or next to the plate and press their bodies against the chips. 2. They press themselves against the wall when the room is steamy or damp. Someone having a bath? All the cellar spiders will quickly make their way to the nearest wall and press themselves against it. Even if there's no direct access to water, it looks as if they are drinking. 3. They are the kings of the tiny world. They will kill much larger spiders because they shoot webs down their legs and are very difficult for other spiders to bite. This shooting webs down their legs fighting style is practically unbeatable by any other insect from what I've seen. I've never seen anything that resembles an insect win a fight against them. 4. Their webs aren't that sticky. The webbing is more of a detection system from what I've seen. I'm not sure if they are blind or not but they seem to rely heavily on vibrations to detect things. This also leads to the question on how they locate other spider's webs to invade and kill the occupant. They must be able to sense it? I don't think they can see it. Perhaps linked to observation 1? 5. They don't react like other spiders to large creatures. They know when a large creature has disturbed its web and will do their signature bounce dance to confuse them. But... They don't know when they are on a large creature if they are out of their web. You'll frequently find them climbing on you if they can. Other spiders are usually able to detect and avoid crawling on large mammals hence the eating spiders while you sleep myth is just that, a myth. These guys will happily crawl on you however.

SaintDomingo1 haha. I have a bunch of these in my house too, haven’t noticed the vinegar or steam thing but definitely the others. I would add that they are very docile and quite entertaining for something that seldom moves. There are groups of them all over but the largest, near the basement door, casts an awesome shadow. There’s a giant house centipede that rambles around them and I guess they have an agreement, as typically they would each enjoy eating the other one. Maybe some sort of barter system!

Dalek increíble observation. I have a jumping spider that has a golden shell. He jumps from my hand to the other, about 6 inches, i caught small fruit flies and he wouldn’t eat, so i let him go, he does not like moisture, obviously because he has lungs that work like a a book, you get it wet and the pages get stuck. He is pretty smart l, he understands and speaks to languages, so i said adios and good bye, hip hopper. I mis his 2 telescope eyes and his mustache. He was a daddy hop legs. I have a cellar spider now, he keeps the west nile virus away. I call them Sanculos.

I'm here because a cellar spider just walked across my keyboard :). I LOVE those delicate spiders, and like having them around. They prey on mosquitoes and other small insects, so they are our natural allies. They vibrate to escape detection: it is their own version of a cloaking device. Their natural enemies can't focus on them as long as they keep vibrating.

Have one of these in my bathroom, I'm hoping he'll chill there and get rid of more annoying things. I had one of these sitting in the corner of the house a few years back, and it racked up a very impressive kill count of other spiders. I was very pleased to see it then spin the carcass around in its web and release it once it was done feeding on it, allowing me to vacuum the dead spider up. What a helpful guy! As an arachnophobe I was very happy.

One of the great things about this species is that they tend not to move around a lot once they set up shop. Good bet that spider will be there as long as there is a good prey source available or till someone or thing big comes along to disturb it out of its web.

Extremely common in all the places I have lived, and they're pretty much the reason I have severe proximity-based arachnophobia. (as in I obsessively study spiders from the safe distance of the internet and literature, but my heartrate goes through the roof when certain types - especially the long legged ones - are actually around me). I know full well that most of them are harmless, it really has nothing to do with danger, their design and presence just make every inch of my skin crawl. I kill spiders above a certain size when I find them, because I genuinely would rather deal with pests than these horror shows in my house, and catching a spider clumsily seems almost worse than giving it a quick death. I'd probably think twice if I lived in an area prone to pest infestations but I don't...

The ones that bother me are also some of the most common. Me and the common house spider are not on the best of terms. I got bitten by one a few years ago and that was when I found out I had a severe allergy to spider's venom. full cardiac arrest in under 5 minutes, only real reason I survived was because it happened in an ambulance barn right next to the rescue itself with other paramedics in the other room that heard me hit the ground. Needless to say, I have a greater respect for the spiders and give them a greater space since then. The cellar spider is the only one right now I have handled bare handed saved one running across a Mcdonalds floor and scooped another out of a trash can bag she had found herself stuck in both times I was not bite while on the rescue mission.

In my video there is a detailed map that I got off the World Spider Catalog that shows its current locations on the world map. Of course they map it by reported sightings so I am sure they are in more places than is shown, but it gives a general idea of where they can be found. If you want some detailed info on these spiders and venom potency numbers etc you can find them in the world spider catalog. You may need to become a member to see the good stuff though. I am a member there and am in the middle of writing a paper on a very rare unnamed spider right now. Exciting stuff :) Thanks again for the shout out, have a great day Dan. I've seen some do a quick wrap job while there was one at one of the places, I worked at that could spend up to 30 mins doing a wrap job on her latest dinner guest. I timed her once with the stopwatch setting on my watch and the beetle she was going after spent 31:22 spinning around.

I'll henceforth call my shower spider Icarus too, if you don't mind. I have to relocate it daily, because I don't want to harm it, but it always manages to come back. It is easy to forget that they are capable of "long-distance crawls" with their long legs. :)

I've had a male one of these that showed up every night when I pissed. Named him Rob. We've always had ant and silverfish problems but ever since he moved in, we haven't seen a single pest for over a month now. One time he crawled across my arm to the opposite wall. Haven't seen Rob in a few days, hope the little guy is okay.

The Pholcidae filled our house with webs to the point where our home looks like "The Munsters". They hop up and down when excited and give me an allergic reaction. I am careful not to disturb spiders, but Cellar Spiders can get completely out of control and reach a point where you'll never free your house of webs in every inch of your home.

A Pholcidae once killed a Araneomorphae (atleast I would guess it was one) right above my bed, those little things are too fast for the big ones,so they can get them spinned up with ease to eat, since then I love them ^^

I had a lot of these spiders in one of the apartments I lived. They would stay under the counters in the kitchen and bathroom. Every summer I had ants coming in the apartment to eat the dog's food and everything they could find. Those spiders would kill so many ants, I could see dozens of ant corpses on the floors under the counters. It is kinda sad I don't have them in my current place, they are so useful.

Got a bunch of them in my house. They are harmless and help keep other bugs in check, but they make a mess. Their leftover webs get everywhere and when they deficate you can see tiny black dots on the floor. Still, they’re better than the pesticides that exterminators use.

I live in the north of Iteland and had never seen one of these before (plenty of harvestmen and crane flies though) until last summer when we all went on holiday down to the southern coast. The big old house we stayed in that week was *full* of them and I had an awful lot of fun watching them rave the fuck out when disturbed on their webs. When we came home we discovered a couple must have stowed away with us. I was not disappointed.

Generally I hate spiders but these ones are an exception because I know them to be harmless and they are very easily identifiable. I've also never gone to pick something up and had one of these hiding under said thing. I usually only ever see them kind of high up on a wall or in a corner.

All spiders are deadly to me due to a fun little allergy I have to their venom despite that I have handled at least 2 of these spiders bare handed due to the fact of the low risk of them biting. A common house spider sent me into full cardiac arrest in under 5 minutes. Ya that allergy is a load of fun to have.

I have one in my bathroom which eats lots of bugs and I really appreciate him But today I feel like a monster, I saw a baby cellar spider in my toilet (not bathroom) exploring my radiator and tried to catch it to release on my balcony which is perfect for cellar spiders to thrive. But then it his in the corner and it's camouflage to the wall made me think that it was in the center so I closed the trap and crushed the poor thing. I tried to bring it back but ended up having to feed it to another garden spider outside. Feel so guilty, I love cellar spiders.

I put an adult jumping spider in my ten gallon terrarium and added an adult cellar spider for the jumping spider to prey on. Hours later, I found the jumping spider all wrapped up and being eaten by the cellar spider. I was crestfallen. I honestly thought the jumping spider would be able to take down a cellar spider. And then I saw this other video on youtube titled "White Tail Spider Vs Cellar Spider | Monster Bug Wars" which really made me respect the common cellar spider more. Watch that video if you haven't yet. Anyway, the cellar spider is still in my terrarium underneath some large bark. Do you think they'd make good pets in a terrarium?

The one in my room is super chill she just hangs out by the outlet upside down and never leaves.
