Plot of Luca: Two boys hiding their true colorful “monster” selves because they’re scared of what will happen to them if the traditional townsfolk who hate people like them find out their secret Hmmmm... I haven’t the faintest clue what the metaphor here is 🤔
@johnnycranknose40983 жыл бұрын
I’m sure this movie is probably an allegory, but I kinda wish they’re just friends. There’s enough trouble in media with the fetishization of male friendships (*cough* cap and Bucky *cough cough*) and anything remotely “intimate” or resembling emotions being deemed gay. It’s kinda annoying when, as a not masculine person, I can’t hang out with guy friends without being called a homosexual. It’s a weird complaint, but it’s basically the only issue us straight guys have lol.
@-Theo-3 жыл бұрын
Johnny CrankNose As a gay guy I can tell you right now this is not fetishization. They’re actually representing something millions of gay kids and gay people in general go through every day pretty well from what I can tell so far. Luca’s expressions and body language towards the other boy really remind me of myself a few years ago when I was his age and had crushes on other boys (I don’t feel the same energy from the other boy towards Luca though). I understand and agree that we should get rid of the stigma that “men being affectionate with each other is gay”, but that’s not the reason the lgbtq+ community see ourselves in this movie, it’s because of the whole subtext I explained in my original comment. All that hiding, all that anxiety and that fear and sadness that comes from having to hide ourselves in fear of being hated really speaks to us and is something that a lot of us went through and are going through right now. I understand that we should have more completely straight male characters be more affectionate with each other however I think it’s more important to have more (good) lgbt representation in films like this, if they go this route it could MASSIVELY impact some people’s lives, I know how ecstatic a gay kid watching this and seeing themselves in a Disney/Pixar movie for the first time. It could even potentially save lives (suicide rates in lgbtq+ youth is way higher than it is in straight youth). Even making straight youth more accepting can have a huge butterfly effect and save a lot of lgbt people who will be born in the future from being kicked out, disowned, or even killed. I agree straight men in media should be more touchy with each other to get rid of the stigma, however please let us have this one, it’s the first time I (and a lot of other gay people for that matter) actually saw myself in an animated Disney/Pixar movie.
@zelmo56833 жыл бұрын

You should make a “starter pack” of international animation. I’m a huge fan of animation in general, but my knowledge base is mostly limited to the us and Japan and the resources to learn of other things are limited or at the very least unknown to me

Going over the history of adding humans with notable subplots in animation live/action movies... I can't help but think of Eddie Valliant in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. And how 1) the problem was largely resolved by filling the main cast with OCs, so the audience wasn't too distracted by the "hey why aren't we focusing on Mickey Mouse" effect and 2) Eddie Valliant's history is tied to the movie's high concept intricately. Every scene going over this doesn't feel like a distraction because it feeds into the main Roger/Eddie relationship the movie is built on.

I'm definitely looking forward to Luca, I feel that the artists at Pixar have much more free range of creativity than at Disney. With many Pixar films, I look at them and I think "That is something unique that I have never seen before." With Disney, not so much. Of course, there are exceptions in both categories, and this is just my personal view on things :]

You should really do a review on Rango. I can’t find it if you’ve done one, and Rango is personally one of my top ten movies of all time, and I view it as the most underrated animated movie of all time. People seem to disregard it because it’s a Nickelodeon film with Johnny Depp. But it’s more than that. There’s so much symbolism and great themes, music, and beautiful animation.

I really hope that "Raya" turns out to be a good movie, so that all the people who complained about the dragon design stop there whining. I mean, Yes, the dragon does not look like the traditional depiction of those kind of dragons. But gues what! That goes for 99% of all magical creatures over multiple decades XD Here some examples: Dwarf originally wheren't tiny chumy garden gnomes. They where muscular, still bearded, workers and wariors (so WoW is actually closer to how dwarfs where than most other depictions xD) The first descriptions of Unicorns where more on the lines of fluffy rhinos instead of pretty white horses (as much as I like that unicorn interpretation) Dragons are different in every country, that's not new. And Harpies are originally not pretty women with wings and MAYBE bird legs. They where gigantic birds with human heads and sometimes breasts. That was about all the human features they had xD Medusa in her early descriptions was ugly af and verry close to not human at all. So yeah, Sexy snake hair Medusa isn't really acurate. Kapa normaly aren't cute/adorable and friendly humanoid turles eather, but turtle-kobold-ish yokai who drown children and suck out your soul through your butt. And those are just the easiest examples I could think off! People by now should have realiced that fantastic creatures change in depiction and lore from person to person. This is really nothing to get upset about, in my opinion.

I just wish the Disney didn't same face so many of their characters. I mean, that dragon has the same exact face as Elsa. Like they should've just gone all the way with the eastern dragon design. So much potential wasted on choosing to make it marketable vs well designed.

@Olivia 757 Yeah, but she's looking beautiful Elsa-style. It's the same human girl eye-shape, same round face, roughly the same proportions - so it's propably going to take many of the same facial expressions any other female Disney lead had. They had the opportunity to experiment with something, push themselves like Pixar does... Instead, they're going with something safe, tested and marketable.
