I can totally understand both sides here - Steven is just exhausted and has gone through so much shit. Spinel is still very damaged and only barely able to control her emotions. I love when Steven messes up though, when we see darker sides of him - it makes him more 'human'. That he has doubts,that he has bad attributes when he argues with the gems instead of always being a lending hand of support.He isn't infallible.

Honestly that was very alleviating. I mean when cellspex pointed it out because a lot of people have been asking how can we redeem rose quartz. It seems less like she was a flawed person and more like she was a gigantic fake. Both now we're only falling apart as well as others just haven't met the message thing again. The current discourse chiding is we're watching her character development backwards. Pursley my issue is that it feels like they never let her do anything wrong and then learn from it. As an example I could totally understand an empathetic person seeing the damage that's happening Earth and then making a human Zoo. That sounds kind and Progressive and concerning. And then she realizes it doesn't work but she can't undo the mistake and this is necessary because we're a person with empathy and healing powers realizing that there are something she cannot fix an undue could easily cause a crisis of conscience that would lead to her turning to terrorism self-sabotage eventually leading to her both developing her self-loathing complex and her distaste for gems as a culture and even to a degree as a species leading to her committing so much in order to saving the earth and its diversity because she both believe that makes her a better person and the people need her protection. But instead almost everything that could be too bad gets contributed to something else This kind of points out that if Steven is very much his mother son than that was probably roses problem from beginning to end. She was fascinated by new things and generally empathetic yes but that didn't necessarily mean she connected with people I'm going to beat level especially due to her very likely being conditioned thanks to ideas such as being isolated in the tower exposed to the sadness or being constantly handled and or criticized by pearls or diamonds. Unfortunately while we've gotten plenty of direct evidence of how Rose can be a bit of a dick. We don't seem to get evidence of Rose actually being effectively caring and kind. Her longest direct appearance was in the story of sour cream where it seems she's a total goof who's also having moments of melancholy. Which does a lot in order to be mystify Andy romanticize Greg story of falling in love with a magical Space Fairy goddess. That is the point of that episode but you can't help but feel given some other things he said that he doesn't realize he was dating a suicidal depressive and helped push her over the edge. Part of the issue is much like in the post 1st Season like ikuhara did on Sailor Moon Greg's kind of served his purpose by Tuxedo Mask did. And the show is more fascinated and set up to make Pearl the Widow of rose quartz and especially her love interest. Considering how effectively Polly Rose was with all of the Crystal Gems so presumably her relationship with amethyst started as more maternal. I've always found it much much less endearing that pearl made morning Rose her thing. But with a single pale Rose almost all the fandom is on her side. We just kind of make the character even more insufferable for me. Laid all the more because I know she's practically be television sort lesbian with Mental issues and people eat that s*** up and certainly identify with it. Straight up animation and Steven Universe fans fully admit that Pearl is their spirit animal or they literally learn about their sexuality personal Identity or identified with her mental problems when they were exposed to her. As a result she feels alarmingly critic-proof. Or I'll put it this way that statistically likely cellspex and almost everyone else will agree with. Pearl is my Tyler Perry's Madea

In a sense, Steven knows what it meant to love her, in the sense that he grew up with people that were fond of her and his outsider perspective allowed him to compile all these different kind of love and get the bigger picture about what it meant to love her. Steven also knows what it means to love someone in general and was the one making the Diamonds realize that what they were giving Pink despite their loving feelings was not love but abuse. Idk it makes sense to me.

If you notice, whenever Steven is severely stressed or tired, he gets far more snappy and angry. It happened in Warp Gem where he talked back to Pearl for the first time, and it happened in Kiki's Pizza Delivery Service and he actually apologized for his outburst a second later. Then in the movie he grabs his face, then just _screams:_ "Spinel. This. Is not. *A GAME!!"* And yeah, at that point, Steven was spent.

this is an interesting theory but I will have to disagree a bit. In the beginning, steven was native, lay back, and always getting into dangerous situations and not being fazed at all as he laughs. Here he is more mature but not having that filter of keeping things to himself as his health literally deteriorated as he was trying desperately hard to save the earth, get the gems back to normal present memories, and get spinel to calm down. I, in fact, enjoyed when spinel misinterprets steven actions and body language, as steven did mess up and give off a bad vibe, and spinel showed her insecurities of not trusting him which is justified.

Spinel was inspired by a stuffed rabbit Rebecca Sugar had as a child, that she left in her garden and didn't find again for several months later and the exposed parts were bleached by the sun. As a child it gave her a moment of existential crisis because something she loved but was careless with changed without her and that change could never be undone. As for Spinel's relationship with Pink Diamond, I never saw it as an allegory for audiences' perception with animation, I saw it as an allegory of children outgrowing their toys. Pink Diamond grew up in an abusive environment; she was never respected, treated as a child, and she was walking on a tightrope of meeting the Diamonds expectations rather than acting on her own wants. When she was finally given her own colony, it was finally her chance to prove herself, but to prove herself mature to the Diamonds, she had to put away childish things: Spinel. Also it was implied White Pearl was originally Pink's but something happened that involved childish games that made the Diamonds confiscate White Pearl and reprogram her, so maybe Pink Diamond was trying to protect Spinel.
