As a native English speaker (with English language and literature qualifications and a degree from a university in England) who already has a 'Skill Level A' job in a professional field in Canada, I feel it's absolutely insane that my entire future career hinges on passing a test like this. I genuinely feel bad for non-native speakers having to go through this ordeal as even I don't feel confident about getting a good enough score (I need a minimum of 9 in each category). The listening test is more of a memory test since you can't hear the conversation more than once, which is stupid, since in a real-life situation you could always politely ask someone to repeat anything you might have missed or forgotten. This speaking test also relies on you having to dream up stories to talk about and I'm not a very creative person, I can very easily imagine my mind going blank on the day. The test shouldn't be checking my creativity or memory, it's supposed to be verifying my language skills.

dan_tm my thought exactly! Listening is more of memorizing what the speaker says. It’s very stupid. I’m a very good English speaker and it’s insane how I have to take this test to determine my English level

You are absolutely correct, and if you did exceptionally well on one part or failed one part I think you should only take that specific section to improve on. I think it’s unfair to those who are not native English speakers.

i completely agree, in real life you don't have to be so creative about what you're talking about or have a lot of ideas or be organized even, it's just conversation! I'm not doing a job interview or giving a speech. Hesitation is also perfectly normal when you're trying to put your thoughts together when talking to people, and they only give a 30sec preparation time! People who designed these tests need to take the tests themselves and see how much score they can get!

An idea just came to me that for the speaking part, it might be easier if we relate the topic to the things around or of ourselves. For example, when giving advice to people who are about to move to a new place, you can imagine the time that you just came to the city and how you get everything started, from renting a house (e.g. craigslist, or posting on social media), hauling your stuff (e.g. U-haul), commuting (buying a car, availability of school or company bus etc.) to meeting new friends, joining communities, alumni associations etc. Another example, when talking about a new place, you can select a place you are familiar with and talk about it the first time been there or assumes you have just visited for the first time (I guess). When planning a party, you can relate to recent activities, such as Thanksgiving and imagine a scene or event that has happened, maybe also adding your friends into the self-plotted drama :). Free up your imagination and relate yourself and people around you into the story. By the way, I'm trying to find the mindset that can make me feel natural and comfortable to talk about any topic.

I gave CELPIP 3 times but I found that they do not have any standardised system, basically, they are still in a developing stage and making money from the people. However, IELTS is really a well-reputed test, you can find tons of practice material free. I gave this test before immigrating to Canada, as a matter of fact, I got 7 in IELTS speaking but after spending 7 years in Canada even CELPIP is not giving me 8 in speaking ( I got 6 twice and the third time 7 ). I believe their system is not fair enough to judge English level. You can imagine stress level in the real exam when you have to attempt full extra tasks in Listening and Reading ( so-called unscored items for development purposes ). Listening part looks like a memory test rather than checking your listening level and Reading seems a confusing test rather checking your real reading ability.

Thanks for sharing your opinion, I faced the same situation, I got 7 in speaking and 6 in writing in IELTS and surprise in CELPIP 6 in speaking and 7 in writing. I know I am not that bad. And even in CELPIP sample responses, they provide some response with the 10-12 rating and I can clearly better than that. This test is pure evil.

4:30 grading criteria 9:11 task 1 38:00 task 2 talking about personal experience 1:01:50 task 3 describing a situation, don't say "what appears to be a food court" when it very clearly IS a food court. just say "i'm looking at a food court". where you can use words like "probably" is when you infer things that aren't immediately obvious

Hi Chris and Marcy, I appreciate the effort you guys are putting in for us, to ace in the CELPIP exam. But I feel somehow for non-native English speakers, the speaking task is a bit tricky. It hardly gives you any time to think and express your viewpoints on the situation given. Well, If possible the initial preparation time for the speaking test should be extended by 1 more min. It will give us an opportunity to express more about the idea with the relevant information. Obviously, to score great in the whole test is in itself a challenge.

highly recommend that ,, we need more time to propose idea,, imagen if you talking about an advice it seems to be here you are asked to give for example 4 pieces of advice, in real time when you speak over a phone call you never cover 4 pieces of advice in 1 minute especially you need to congratulate for the new job and closing. 1 min is not a scale to measure if the test taker bale to get high scores or not.

The probabilities in this scene are ,the group around fire may get exhausted and return to their vacant tent,the other fishing group will catch lots of fish and return to the fire to prepare meal.The person in the lake may come outside of the lake and join the group around fire for meal .To sum up everyone will gather around to enjoy fish and return to their respective tents to have a rest.

I find the preparation time too short. You should give us time to read the question and extra time to prepare. Maybe the question should be read to the test taker and after that the preparation time begins. Some people like me are slow readers and have more difficulties to read, assimilate the task, prepare to it and start speaking. I hope you can take it into consideration.

Do these standards also go towards people with speech impediments or a physical limitation that stops them from speaking fluently without pausing to think of the next word in the sentence? Like those with heart/autoimmune issues that have brain fog? I am great at writing my thoughts, but saying them out load I have problems with remembering words and having to stop speaking mid sentence to remember what I was going to say.

@CELPIPOfficial
@CELPIPOfficial 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Usha. Thank you for including the time stamp. The word shame has multiple meanings, and in this case, it is used to mean "a regrettable or unfortunate situation". Another example of that usage is "it is a shame it's raining today, I really wanted to go out." The speaker is acknowledging the unfortunate situation where the candidate couldn't perform their best due to being nervous. He goes on to then provide recommendations on how to solve that situation if needed.

@@rodolforoger CELPIP IS a test, and it's the CELPIP-General or IELTS that you NEED if you wish to gain residency here in Canada. Both are government recognized. I see below you think it's a trap. Why would you say this? How is it different to IELTS, besides it being multiple choice, and the speaking being done to a computer? IELTS also costs about the same.

The reason why the voices of the examiner are different and almost whispering because the actual testing room are not comportable. We the examiner paid very expensive and we're expecting a comportable place and space. I personally experienced it. When we are in room we are 6 persons I think then when are sitted on chair one sit apart back to back its too close and I don't feel comportable cuz all the move of the women next to me distracted me specially when she was typing. If I speak, everybody hear it. Of course its too distracted. The room is medium size but we only use half of the room. They set all of us in left corner of the room and too near to one another . We, as examiner need a comportable and no distractions because we paid a lot. The quality of place is not good. And its doesn't make sense why they put us half side of the room while the other side is empty. There are camera in the room for security purposes or for cheating maybe. But if you improve the quality of the place it make a lot better for us.

As for the lexical range (vocabulary), here are the guiding questions that raters keep in mind when they mark your work: This category assesses how well the test taker uses vocabulary, idioms and phrases to make his/her ideas understandable: 1. Is the range of words sufficient to complete the task? 2. How well is the test taker using words that help express precise ideas clearly with minimal pausing and hesitation? 3. Can the test taker combine words to express precise meaning?

Each component of the test is given a CELPIP Level and there is no pass or fail. It is recommended that you contact the institution to which you are applying about their English language requirements.

Hi amy good day, I heard from Jack of our friend that you are planning for you baby shower party. If you don't mind, I can suggest a sailor theme party it match to your husband profession since he is a sailorman. With a stage decorated with anchor made of ropes with balloons on both side. And a steel couch on the center of the stage where you can seat. We can add up a bar style on the side which probably your friends and visitors will gonna love it with different drinks and appetizers on it. Other side we can put another table for foods and we can make a cake made of diapers and baby bottles. We can decorate some stuffs that it would look like a true ship setting. We can put up a dancing light with matching music. I hope you would like it my simple ideas on your incoming party.

if your micro phone is not working you can tell somebody that micro phone is not working totally wrong so sorry to tell you that you are confusing the listeners and not using appropriate vocabulary i.e you should have said like this that if your micro phone is not working you need to tell the invigilator or admin present in the exam room what ever you said above it is confusing by saying tell someone. that is confusing because i could tell person sitting next to me because i would be already stress sitting in the exam and hearing that ambiguous sentence

CELPIP speaking section is not standard! Tasks 3 and 4 are not entirely measuring common speaking skills! It looks like they are looking for advanced public speaking skills, too. Asking to predict what will happen next in a picture is ridiculous and the answer requires a state of the mindset that is not necessary a speaking skill.

Hello Vahid, we want to reassure you that prior to operational testing, all test items and test procedures are reviewed by committees of educators and language specialists to ensure that the content is accurate and appropriately assesses language ability. Our test is also heavily audited by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), formerly known as CIC to ensure the fairness and accuracy of our rating system.
