Love this. Am I understanding that Sydney Harbour (Botany bay for anyone who is interested is not part of Sydney Harbour. ) was where it was decided after many pints in the sunshine (sometimes not a good idea for those who don't realise Sydney is situated on latitude 33 degrees south which would be equal to North Africa. South of Malta if that works. ) And booze and Too much sun makes you sick sometimes. Anyway so I'm hearing that we're never going back to Ireland because of my home town Sydney. I've got Irish on both sides and Convicts as direct ancestors. Anyway Overlooking the harbour while having the craic would be able to do that. Oh. Botany bay is in Sydney. But the harbour is Parramatta river and the bay is part of the Georges river system.

They are singing about leaving Ireland never to return and saying see you again in heaven as im not going back to my beautiful island seeking my fortune in America. The original toora loora loora was a memory of someone whos mother sang them an Irish lullaby just before she died and they still hear her voice across the divide and across the many decades down the road. ❤

In the north of England where many displaced irish settled taraah or toodle pip are bastardisations of toora loora, it meand until we meet again. My dad was a merchant sailor and not married to my mam and he sang this to me every time he visited in case we never met again. Not thinders version but the original irish lullaby. And I break down any time it comes on even in public, the line i still hear her voice humming/ singing, I literally hear and see my dad sat by my bed and little 3 yr old me singing it. He even recommended us on a cassette. Id give anything to have that tape.
