"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode. “That Raytheon decided they don’t hate gays or trans people - frankly, I don’t really give a shit what their take on that is..."

As someone who broke their tibia in a logging accident, I can say mind over matter can take you a long way. I walked up a 50 foot steep incline, tried to finish the day, realized the swelling was getting out of hand, drove 40 minutes home to look for crutches I couldn’t find, then drove 40 more to the emergency room and found out it’s wasn’t swelling, my tibia was bleeding into my leg out of the fracture. The key is to accept the pain, not out will it. But I learned pain is there for a reason and you should listen to it and I’m a dumb ass lol. Being a tuff guy always back fires…….always.

Cenk came off as respectful in that interview. He gave thoughtful answers and at least temporarily changed the viewpoint of the host. I would respect Kyle more if he goes on Rogan’s show and actually challenge him on issues they disagree on such as the vaccine. Sadly it seems Kyle won't criticize Rogan. The same week Kyle uploaded a clip of Rogan looking good pushing back against a homophobe who couldn't get his head around Dave Rubin's adoption, Rogan was talking with another guest and saying that there wasn't anything wrong with the Don't Say Gay bill and that parents were just rightly worried about their kids being indoctrinated and groomed. But Kyle had nothing to say about that. It's sad because Kyle has no problem criticizing people like Bernie or AOC when they get it wrong (which they do) but he won't criticize Rogan. It seems like Kyle has decided it's better to always play nice with Rogan in the hope of winning over some of his base for political reasons, even if it means basically abandoning his support for marginalized groups on social issues. If you are right wing, you’re racist, transphobic, and all the other horrible things; if you’re a lefty, you’re soft, a cry baby, too “woke” etc. Why is there this constant need to pigeon hole people into one category, like we’re robots? I do feel aligned with the values of the left on most things, however I don’t just agree down the line for the sake of it. I’m more complex, as I would imagine are most Americans. It feels like some of my favorite left wing news sources are now falling into that un-nuanced view of everything. They are doing exactly what I dislike that the right wing does and it’s exhausting. It makes politics feel like a waste of time. So thank you for pointing this out. It needs to be said more often.

The left is constantly obsessed with purity tests and deeming anything that's veering slightly to the right of what they believe as 'fascism', 'bourgeois propaganda', 'right-wing', etc. The left has fully embraced the anti-Fox News knee-jerk reaction, and has become completely intolerant of any opposing views on matters. The left also believes that all of it's solutions are perfect (i.e. there are no trade-offs to their solutions), these solutions are easy to implement, all issues in the world are urgent issues, and assumes that all Americans somehow think the way they do. They constantly bash others who don't believe in the policies they believe in, and assume that anyone who doesn't think the way they do or doesn't vote the way they do must automatically be 'voting against their own interests', as if the left has a monopoly on what is good and moral. This is precisely why the Left will never succeed in 'building' a movement, because it's too busy fighting itself and creating a dog-eat-dog atmosphere. I see the left further isolating itself and become more about virtue-signaling than anything else. Cenk, TYT, and many online left commentators are a bunch of losers who offer half-assed, unoriginal insights to very complex issues. Now, I'm not excusing the right-wing commentators, they're just as bad in this regard, but in a different way/method. The right, however, knows how to market.

I totally feel you on the "All or nothing" style labeling of people politically. I am also diverse in thought and values but I am definitely on the left. But there are some aspects of the left that I feel are so antithetical to progress and actual change. The idea of nuance has been lost and unless we find it we will be in a forever battle with each other while the corporations and wealthy sit back, laugh at the show and count their money from tax breaks, labor exploitation and the rigged capitalist system they bribed the government to set up for them. ✌❤ to you!!

And pain isn't really the issue if you get hit in the right spot and just go night-night. Or even kicked in the right spot on the leg and your foot goes numb. Professional fighters very rarely get KO'd or TKO'd because of pain, they either just get put out or their equilibrium is so compromised they can't defend and the fight gets called.

Here's Kyle capping for Joe Rogan again. From the right and left leaning guests that Rogan has on his show the right leaning ones he's had on probably outnumber the left ones at least 3 to 1. He recently had on I believe it was Ben Burgis? Who if I'm being honest was only on after all the controversy that Rogan was getting piled on for all those derogatory takes that came to light. Before that it was probably months before he had any form of left leaning guests. Rogan is pretty much right wing, full stop. Not sure why this is being contested.
