This is the fifth video in the series on central Moreton Bay. In this episode I pick up the story at the Small Ships Passage, continue up the Rous channel and take a couple of small detours down to the Maroom Hole and into Fisherman’s Gutter.
This area has it all, well I admit I am a little biased, but it is a very good area offering some excellent fishing and is a reasonable overnight anchorage so long as it isn’t too rough.
There is a very large variety of species to be caught in a relatively small area. Over the years I have caught whiting, flathead, sole, pike, barracuda, stingray, shark, grass sweet-lip, snapper, blue-bone and mackerel, not to mention the countless bait stealers that also share the area. Everything in season, of course.
As usual, after I finished the video and listened to it I thought of things I should have said. In one or two places I spoke about threading your way through the sand banks and following the darker water. Listening to this I remembered a few times where people thought cloud shadow or submerged weed beds (both of which make the water “look” darker) were areas of deeper water. Until you can tell the difference, be very careful.
Another thing I didn’t mention is that the Small Ships Passage and surrounding areas have weed beds that are good areas to catch squid. I can’t help you much with that because I am only just dabbling in jigging for squid myself. Never-the-less if you identify a weed bed in the area and it is squid season you could give it a try, after all, that is how you find new areas to fish.
I hope you enjoy.
