Who Was Baal?

In the Hebrew Bible, Baal is portrayed as the great rival of Yahweh. In the Book of Kings, the prophet Elijah famously challenges the prophets of Baal to a sacrificial offerings contest that ultimately leads to their doom. John Hamer of Toronto Centre Place will put these Biblical narratives in the context of what is known about Canaanite and Ancient Semitic religion, and the gods worshiped with the honorific title “Ba’al” (which means “Lord”).

I am of Lebanese blood, my family emigrated from the city of Sidon 50 years ago. It is a fascinating place with two crusaders castles, a monastery from that era, a mosque that was built by the crusaders as a church and later converted, a Phoenician temple, among other things. The name Baal (pronounced Ba'al) is still invoked today to refer to land where the crops are naturally grown (what you call organic), and the land is never watered. Such crops like olives for example are considered the best since watering is considered to dilute the oil. I used to hear farmers referring to such crops as "ala Ba'al" which literally means grown by Baal. The term is still used till today.

Tectauus is an interesting figure remembered as Baal and Shiva. I think he is recorded on the Sumerian King's list as Kullasina-bel. It would be a fitting title for the son of Perses/Tarshish/Jushur.

Tectauus is also called The Bull or the Horned Heracles who is considered possibly Gilgamesh. Tectauus is the son of Perses who was supposedly born in Nubia to Perseus. And Perses is supposed to be the first Pharaoh according to myth. Perses is also credited with building the small pyramids in Nubia. From my understanding his son Tectauus traveled the world from India to Europe teaching his father's religion of return to nature and that his father would return after dying, the dying and living again King concept. The constellation Taurus is named after Tectauus.

Fascinating stuff around 40:00 about Hezekiah, and his successors switching back and forth between Ba'al and Yahweh worship, with the Yahweh worshipers getting punished and the Ba'll worshipers doing fine. By the way, Hezekiah seems a lot like Akhenaten to me, now that I think of it. I religious reformer who took the country in a more monotheistic direction, only to have his reforms undone by his successor.

Consider the possibility that the story's author knew that distilled alcohol can be made in a way that it is as clear as water. A spark which was hidden from sight could suddenly ignite the fire. My biggest hangup with Christianity was that it relies completely on blood sacrifice (something innocent must die to purify guilt) rather than a propitiatory system (undo the wrong you committed) which makes me wonder why God preferred such a practice/system?

What books do you recommend? Be warned though: it is not my field. As luck would have it I bumped into a Coptic monk in large, chain, stationery store a week ago and we discussed this same topic with regard to ancient manuscripts found scattered amongst their heirlooms, laying around here and there.

Baal is one of the four fallen angels mentioned in scripture, the other three being Satan, the spirit of seduction (aka Ashtoroth/the false prophet), and the spirit of rejection (aka Moloch/the spirit of death). In the New Testament Book of Mark, chapter eight, verse fifteen, Jesus told his disciples to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the leaven of Herod. As I understand it, the leaven of the Pharisees has to do with top-down-control religion (soul power religion that is dead spiritually), and the leaven of Herod has to do with politics.

Terrible exposition, he missed so many details, all he did was blame and complain about the jewish writters saying that they wanted to tamper with history, and he labeled th Torah as a misrepresentation of everything that happened during those times. Definitely not a scholar. Ive heard many other historians with PHds talking about this topic with such richness of details. This guy missed the mark and he has reductionist way of explaining important events that kind of give the impression that he doesnt actually understand them, and if he was a historian, he wouldnt erradicate the symbol BC, by replacing it with that anti-christian one. Its christians who popularized the Gregorian Calendar, so do not mess with erasing that from the anals of history.
