The northern Kingdom of Israel, centered on its capital Samaria, was destroyed by the Assyrian Empire in 720 BCE. Many members of the nobility were deported to Mesopotamia where they eventually assimilated, the so-called “Lost Ten Tribes of Israel.” However, the overwhelming majority of the northern Israelite people continued to live under Assyrian rule in the provinces of Samaria, Megiddo, and Gilead. When Assyrian rule was replaced by Babylonian and finally Persian rule, the people of Samaria (the Samaritans) continued to maintain their Israelite identity and even offered to help the returning Judean exiles (the Jews) rebuild the Jerusalem Temple. This offer was refused and over time, Jews and Samaritans became bitter rivals. John Hamer of Toronto Centre Place will look at Samaritan history from antiquity to the present.

I listen to John excellent lectures at night, in bed. They are so interesting. John is a great storyteller and a fountain of knowledge. One of the best hidden hems of KZbin. One day, these lectures will be famous worldwide and I’ll be able to say “I was there from the beginning”

A lot of people including good friends have told me that they do use these videos to fall asleep, because they are interesting enough to quiet their minds from competing thoughts, but soporific enough to induce sleep. Many times the lectures are largely original, but a lot of times I do circle back to points we've made in previous lectures. In part, this is because they are a mosaic that is completely a coherent picture. But I understand for listeners with good memories like you, if the repetition is less welcome. Thanks!

I presume the name "Nablus" comes from the Greek words "Neapolis" which means "new city" so that this town would have a similar word origin to Naples in Italy and Carthage in north Africa and many other places!

I enjoy when you review the timeline graph or other past materials to put in prospective where this lecture is in the mosaic and piece together past lectures. Would much rather hear things a third or fourth time than be unsure on where we are in the story. Thank you for your commitment to each lecture and assuming the listener requires the context or backstory, or at least appreciates the refresher/review.

Perhaps some folks here are familiar w/ Dr. Justin Sledge's highly academic channel Esoterica, in which things like Gnosticism & Kaballah are covered. Like John of Centre Place, he practices religion while regarding texts quite critically and academically. I'd love to see them team up, at the very least, they'd have a cool name for the collaboration: Sledge/Hamer !

Thinking about what he said, that Galilee having been part of the original northern kingdom assimilated into Judah and lived as Jews, rather than Samritans. I consider my own heritage when thinking of this situation. I’m from Texas, a state that was once part of another country, but fought for its independence and became its own country, then annexed into the Union. I am also of Mexican descent and having been born in the US, as a third generation American citizen, I’ve pretty much assimilated into American culture. Yet despite having adopted the customs and culture I still retain a small part of the Mexican culture and identity. With that being said, I wonder if Jesus’ theological perspective and teachings were a hybrid form of the old religion mixed in with the modern Hellenized version he ran into in his travels!? 🤔🤔

If the Samaritans can to some extent trace themselves back before the old testament why do we not have any writings from them. It seems like something from them would have survived

So Samaritanism is a fourth Abrahamic religion - after Judaism, Christianity and Islam - but what about Mandaeanism who still have a significant number of followers - I believe that they think John the Baptist is the Messiah and Jesus is not. Is it Abrahamic?

When did the Israelite society form into kingdoms? Did that ever happen? The only time that Judah society formed into a kingdom was under the Hasmoneans. Correct? If so, why do you refer to kingdoms when they didn't exist? How can any mythology 'affirm' anything?

What if we all universally convert to Samaritans as the original proponents of the one true universal GOD? If we were all good Samaritans the world would be a better place. If we all treated others like neighbors, as we would treat ourselves, that would bring glory to GOD. Could be worth a try?

But then the parable of the Good Samaritan would become meaningless, wouldn't it? You've got to have an "other" for that parable to make sense.

Protestantism & Catholicism/Pauline Christianity are Worship of God, that we have not seen(according to Jesus) are worst than cults..becuz these churches Worship God in a Temple made of Stones & of Wood....Jesus emphasized that we have to Worship God after the Destruction of the Temple that was built for 46 years in Jerusalem (70 AD), as told to the Samaritan woman..to Worship God in Spirit & in Truth only, a Worship of God in a Temple made of Gold and Prescious stones(Gemstones) and not in any churches made of Stones & of Wood....The Cube City or Temple with 12 Gates will arrive soon..so get READY..Jesus said Drink my Blood & Eat my Flesh to gain Eternal Life.

So around 1:42 you go on to discuss the story of the good Samaritan. Im glad you can interpret it the way you do as this would make a nice world, unfortunately this is not the truth. Lets assume Judaism is an evolved religion with political undertones and rivals. In the first centuries BC and AD saw a military, Messianic religion challenge the might of Rome. Samaritans did not challenge Rome. The New Testament was a rebuke of Judaism and the beginning of anti-semitism. Rome was never to blame for Jesus as Pilot washed his hands, Herod was not to blame as he refered Jesus to the Pharasees. It was the Jews who called out, " Give us Barrabus." I belive the so called Christos, Greek for Messiah, that Nero killed after the fire of Rome were Helinised Jews, falsly accused of being Rebels, Messianic Jews. After 70Ad Titus, son of Emporor Vespasian ordered the Temple to be destroyed and all Jewish books confiscated and brought to Rome. Vespasian was the same General who destroyed Druids in Gaul. The writings of Paul have an eerie similar style and analogies as Josephus Flavius Antiquitys of the Jews. The whole idea of the New Testament was to discredit the Jewish Rebels and create a more Roman friendly religion. The claim: God gave his blessing to a rebelious people who perverted it and now the blessing is now on the Gentiles, Spiritual Jews. The Sumeritan story was just one more story to show just how corrupt the Jew was. Its all nonsense. Stop hate

I love you and your lectures John but please stop using the false term palestine when talking about Israel, it's not a real place and is highly offensive colonial term who's only purpose is to disrespect the indigenous Israelite population of th land of Israel

It's a historical region, get over it. "Roman Palestine" was even a Roman province between the early 2nd and late 4th centuries AD. Stop inserting presentism into historical discussions, it's highly detrimental to the scientific process.
