As a construction company owner I need trucks to provide service to my customers and for staff to drive. We have always operated with the understanding of a newer truck is just less expensive to maintain and own. The greed and out right extortion being seen at the dealerships has made me change my perspective. Buying two trucks for the price of 3 with the value of 1 is just bad math and damn expensive. I have implemented a maintenance program that is keeping things running well. I am saving a lot of money driving trucks a few years old.

In the late eighties you could get a brand new 1/2 ton full size pickup truck for around $14K, inflation went up about %250 from then that would put a new pick-up today at around $35K. Good luck finding that today, the trucks have gotten more complicated and more expensive to maintain while the bodies have decreased in weight and thickness of the sheet metal to lighten them up for better fuel economy while the prices have increased. You could also order a truck with the features you wanted back then such as color, wheel type, type of radio or no radio, suspension package etc.. Until the prices come down to reasonable levels they can keep their trucks as well as the rest of their vehicles, let them rust on the lots until they have to greatly discount them to sell them.

Profit is more important than anything, so that's why all of these auto manufacturers are struggling. They don't give a flip about the average people anymore, just the pocket spenders, and the manager of General Motors is driving GM to the ground. With the exception of the Pontiac Vibe, because it's a Toyota, Common sense finally hit me almost three years ago to give up on American made vehicles, and just stick with Toyota.

@@curtiswilson4737 that's the wild part, quality hasn't even gone up with pricing. This is exactly what happens that is precipated by and a cause of an Economic Slow Down. Sluggish sales, brings discounts, but ultimately production gets reduced, which drives up prices, to maintain and increase PROFITS, but as the prices rise, the decline ins sales inversely goes hand in hand with it, which then causes production to decrease and prices to rise to make up for that "Missing" Profit, only to see Demand decrease exponentially. This is a Doom Cycle.

The industry can come up with all sorts of excuses for the problems they are having but the real reason why trucks are not selling is the outrageous prices they are asking. Most normal people have a perceived range of pricing that they feel is fair for vehicles and it definately does NOT go much over $50,000 dollars, and for most of us it likely doesn't exceed $30,000. Plus add all the greed based markups over MSRP and people feel these companies are simply gouging them for their products (which they are). So you now have what is happening...consumer backlash. So be it.....you created it GM and Ford....now live with it !!

When a vehicle's monthly payment is almost as much as a home mortgage payment, there's a serious pricing problem. People still want and need new vehicles, but that's not the issue. They simply cannot afford them. For most working people a $300 or $350 a month payment is about tops and payments of $1000 or more are impossible, even if you could secure a loan. When you add in the fact that the factories went ahead and raised the MSRP so dealers could still get their "market adjustment" grift, you have failure written all over the auto market.

Paid cash for it, and now have a truck I'm pleased with, without breaking the bank. Several GM dealers were telling me they would slap a $5K markup on their trucks .... and told them to pound sand! I work at a small Chevrolet dealership in close proximity to the Fort Wayne plant. My total new inventory of new cars, trucks and SUV's is a whopping 14 and that number includes vehicles that are currently being transportated to the dealership. Only 3 of the 14 vehicles that are sitting on my lot are New Silverados. Meanwhile as I drive past the plant I can litterally see thousands of trucks parked outside the plant. I am told that GM has secured parking on the other side of Fort Wayne where tens's of thousands of additional trucks are being stored. While the higher interest rates are affecting sales, so is the lack of inventory. And the low dealer inventory of new vehicles has increased the demand, and cost of pre-owned vehicles. I'm not stating any of this to solicit "pity the poor dealer" comments... these actions are hurting the consumer.
