I have sooo many saved games in various states of progression through Act 1. I have a similar problem in games like Civ 6. I have the most fun at the beginning of the game during the setup/powerup phase and then I kind of lose interest after that. Unlike Civ, I did manage to finish BG3 once on Tactician and once on Honor mode, but I don’t know if I’ll ever go back to finish the last couple achievements, especially now that mods are available.

Not sure if this has been brought up before, but I noticed that if you build Arcane Ward stacks with Arcane Lock, then replace that spell with something else, you lose all of your Arcane Ward stacks, so you will have to keep Arcane Lock prepared at all times if you use it.

The chilled effect on the Mourning Frost has a Con save DC of 12, which unfortunately is pretty easy to resist for most enemies. I would recommend having a source of reverberation that lowers Constitution and rats with Infectious bite or bleed are also useful.

Great build. I am running shadowheart in my party as 1 Storm sorc / 5 tempest cleric / 6 Abjuration Wizard. Takes longer to get the arcane ward, but adds in Spirit guardians & Luminous Armor Radiant orb as another source of passive damage / debuffing. Prone from reverb and ice never gets old. Running with phalar aluve and going for the storm scion hat to see if spirit guardians & shriek will proc arcane acuity for reliable command spells. She is the front-line retaliation tank for the party. Level 6 right now and she is very hard to kill. Disintegrating night walkers are a must to keep from falling on the ice. Sleet storm then spirit guardians to clean up has been really strong. So is glyph of warding ice.

I didn't know you could freeze people with water while they are chilled. That's nice to know. Also I think that I will run this build with 2 levels in sorcerer and 10 in wizard to 1. Attrack attacks on this character cuz he won't have high ac. (I'm going to use him in a party) 2. Get those short rest elixirs going to have always full arcane ward charges 3. maybe get some funny twincast ray of frost or distant spell shocking grasp to electrify the steam, which leads to 1d4 more 'passive' lightning damage which they are vulnerable to with wet 4. I will use a warding bond camp cleric so I'll be resistant to everything already and the attacks coming in won't hurt me that much. 5. I'm thinking of using the spellsparkler to dual wield from lvl 6 on. All in all though a great build. Thank you for the video :)

Yooooo literally mentioned this as viable build in the video with the coldsnap slander! Coldsnap deserves tiered up! Its probably worth mentioning that glyph of warding doesn't proc any elemental gear. I dont think it registers the damage as having come from the caster, since its cast like a trap (even when you set the trap to instantly go off)

I recently just came up with a similar build myself, though I haven't tested it enough yet. This is at least vindication that it's viable lol I went with 6 sorc/5 wiz/1 cleric instead for the meta magic hacks and also for Elemental Affinity: Damage along with the Necklace of Elemental Augmentation, Potent Robes, and Spellmight gloves for hilarious 100+dmg (and twinned) ray of frosts.

I would charge this build to be 3 levels dragon sorcerer to get your metamagic, twin spell, extend spell and quicken spell, options and the ability to get infinite spell slots through the manipulation of specific items and abilities. One level tempest cleric and then eight eight levels absuration wizard. 16. Damage reduction is pretty good and once you pair that with the armor of persistence, that's effectively 32. The rotation that I found to be most effective is at the beginning of combat cast, haste on myself, and then use my infinite spell slots and sorcery points to just start spamming all of my spells like cantrips. It's really busted and a lot of fun. On top of the fact that I'm pretty much unkillable. it makes you feel like you're playing on god mode even though not a single mod has been installed. If you're wondering how to do the infinite spell slot exploit. There is a shield in act 2 sold by the vendor who sells you the cloak of protection. It gives you one spell slot. You unequipped it and re-equipped it and that one spells lot is replenished. Make infinite sorcery points and then convert that into infinite spell slots. It's tedious but it is infinite. The second and better option is at the beginning of act 3. You use the astral tadpole and unlock the free cast ability. As of patch 7 this still works by putting the create spell slot, create surgery points and underwear on your hot bar. Every time you unequipped and re-equipped your underwear, it refreshes the freecast mind flayer ability. Use freecast to create up to level 5 spell slots and free cast to generate unlimited sorcery points. And have fun while you spam fireballs like cantrips

I found Freeze to be pretty disappointing. Enemies just unfreeze on their turn and act normally, its only good for the extra bludgeoning/force/thunder damage. Heavy armor isnt really good for this build either as you want enemies to hit you so you want to actually lower your AC. Bonespike armor is really good because it has built in damage reduction just like Adamantine Splint and has retaliation pierce damage.

If you're actually going for solo playthrough, you probably don't want enemies to hit you that often, unless you want to long rest after every encounter. Abjuration is cool, but its one disadvantage is that it burns through spell slots too fast. That'd be double true here when all the enemies could just focus on one person. So I think that the retaliation damage is best kept for when enemies actually manage to hit you but that should ideally happen rarely. The rest of the time, you destroy them with a combination of cantrips, spells and perhaps melee attacks.

Access to heavy armor (which you do other ways) and access to shields (early game boost to AC) and casting create water (which you can do other ways).

Cleric has heavy and medium armor prof for anti crit gear. Wrath of the storm will get free lightning damage for basically doing what your build is intended plus it doubles if you've been wetting targets. And then there's sanctuary which is probably the best spell for solo and grouping enemies or even in general just to help a teammate you revived to not get instantly domed.

Got a build with glitches for you to check it uses shadow blade, and the bliss machine I used it with honor astarion origin, and the crit psichic vulnerable shots were amazing I did 5 ek 7 rogue but I am gonna try tavern brawler xerker giant elixir trow the bliss machine and then shadow blade, also the shadow blades are done by making a hireling cast the shadowblade, dismissing and contracting the same again he comes back with a psisical blade

You know, I've always had an issuer with these abjuration-builds. Same as you have a problem with steroid-based monk tavern brawler builds. It's just kind of silly to have our epic hero spam arcane lock just to later be invincible in combat. Although in terms of roleplay I can think of a couple of fun backstories of a clumsy fake it till you make it wizard who has to do it.

Dual wield str builds are the best, do a ssb bardadin or shadow monk assassin. Str is op because of the pot of cloud giant str. You will never miss and hit like a truck

Any consideration for Cleric 2 at one of the higher levels for destructive wrath? Frozen enemies are vulnerable to Thunder damage, and chromatic orb's thunder mode deals an extra d8 of thunder damage base, so it doesn't take too much investment to be able to have a lightning lord action in your pocket.

It's a pretty standard cold-build, but very good! I like cold builds a lot, and almost always make either Gale or Shadowheart or my own character into such a build. And this is extremely similar to what i often do for Gale. But one thing you have added over my usual cold build is Cold Snap ... that is something i've never done, and it is great! I will try that, for sure! One comment tho, is that you said its not intended to be the party face. However, if it is for a solo build, then it is the party face, by default! .. so might need to adjust things a little to cover that, if indeed it is to be solo. Maybe Friends/Guidance and/or Thaumaturgy is enough though ..

I didn't manage to beat Myrkhul with this without explosives and since I was bugged and couldnt drop explosives on the ground, he killed me by making it impossible for me to heal for 5 turns or something. So I am not so certain about this build solo potential and I am not gonna try again with this build.

I like the idea of arcane ward + temp hit points + damage reduction as it makes the toon very tanky, but I prefer melee combat over spell casting. Do you think a build that goes into fighter and gwm could be viable for solo play? something along the lines of sorc/cleric/wizard x2/fighter x5/wizard x3 ? Probably would need to respec into it at some point to hit the various power spikes.

I don't think cleric adds alot If you Take Fighter Levels. 6 Fighter 5 Wizard 1 Sorcerer would give you 3 feats which you could spend on heavy Armor master, +2 strength and great weapons master. Being an eldritch knight will also give OK spell Progression, should end Up with 5th Level spells If I'm not mistaken. You'd only have 10 stacks of arcane Ward tho. There is a polearm which gives you stacking buff which reduces incoming damage... I belive the buff is called force conduit. I think you can make a hybrid Fighter Wizard build with it. Might not be one of the best builds, but might be fun to play

you would do more damage with that build due to having extra attack and gwm. but you are much less tanky due to less arcane ward and less spell slots to upcast armor of agathys and recover arcane ward with. overall its a cool idea and id love to try it, it might be too squishy for the intended "run in and provoke as many attacks of opportunity as possible". only thing i would change is picking up your first fighter level 1 level later so you can get a 3rd level in wizard so you can scribe 3rd level wizard spells from scrolls due to multiclassing. theres some amazing 3rd level spells that you really want, haste ofc but mostly glyph of warding (it both does good aoe damage which can be cold but also restores your arcane ward in combat)

@@julianheil9047 those are good points. I like cleric to save the amulet spot and still have guidance and sanctuary, but I think you might be right. I'm confident the pure caster version is better and it's surely more efficient, but I find martial classes more satisfying to play. It's all personal preference obviously.

I have a Hunter Ranger that used Cold Snap along with the Trident of the Waves. The Trident auto Wets enemies that it strikes, which is usually a lot of targets with Whirlwind Attack resulting in many Frozen victims. Unfortunately, the Trident doesn't do bludgeoning damage, but it was a fun build for Level 11.

Coold build. 😏 Ty 4 sharing. This is only weak to hold person tipe of spells couse low WIS. But being a wizard this one have a lot of freedom to adapt your gameplay. My personal take is to focus more on armor of agathys going sorcerer-ice draconid 9, cleric 1(only 4 heavy armor), berserker 2. Berserker 2 is to make the enemies get advantage with reckless attack at you so you proc more often armor of agathys, also your itmes will work with CHA and if needed you can rage to avoid some damage. The risky ring is another option but it will change the build and it will make you weak to other more dangerous effects. As feats you can pick dual wielding/resiliance WIS/alert and master of heavy armor. Weapons: the ones that give you initiative. There is a shield, bow and a hat. Armor: the most basic one against weak enemies if not change to your strongest one. Of course at early game you will use water bottles but in act 3 you can use the trident that get enemies wet. If you summon myrmidons or elementals they will take damage that YOU want to take, they r good to anoy archers or casters thoug. It can can be adapted to being almost a full Warlock. As long as you take master of heavy armor and set up your buff to have a lot of resistencies. Abjuration wizard is not the only option here.

Possibly, but you are going to want to cast abjuration spells most of the time anyway unfortunately.

The only spell you really need is Armour of Agathys, which you start with.

Actually this is quite weak variation of abjuration wizard (I experimented with it in more detail). The main problem is that you are killing the enemies slowly with this build, it probably works, but it's not fun.
