Same dude....same. I remember...May 27th 2005 (I think) a journey began and Kut-Ku kicked my ass. I enjoyed the "hunting simulation" aspect. I still do it's just that's been lost especially with Rise. I also miss hit lag since...well Rise just doesn't feel the same. Side note but I consider MHFU to all of third gen to be the peak of the franchise so far with most of 4U as well. Edit: Oh yeah and the small monsters were often the real boss.

Ah yes, back when Blademasters and gunners had completely different sets and it was still possible to get one shot wearing maxed gunner armor because it had weaker base defense but higher elemental resists(I still miss the looks of some of those gunner sets). @@ShinyUmbreon765 I disagree that it's a good change. It's more oversimplification mascarading as quality of life. These things are being changed willy-nilly without any regard for consequence on the overall design. Some shmuck thought it was a very good quality of life change to make whetstones infinite. Then someone added the dog. Then someone said you should be able to sharpen on the dog. Then someone said you could do that *while moving*. Well why the fuck even have sharpening or durability anymore at that point? It requires no commitment, thought or strategy to sharpening anymore so it just becomes a speedbump. And now they'll have to find a way to fix that too on the next game. They're just creating more issues for the sake of fixing things that never needed fixing in the first place. : P Having gearsets that enhance your performance on the type of weapon you play is a much better choice than everyone wearing the same thing and there being an extremely rigid meta that applies to everybody, which in turn makes balancing weapon damage effectively impossible and so every weapon has to have roughly comparable damage outputs, further ruining the balance imposed by their movesets -- thus all the wirebug shit that was shoehorned in to ensure every weapon had generally the same options. And so, why even have different weapons? See? xD

MH veterans are so hyped for returning monsters, and I'm happy for them, but I wish I could feel some of that nostalgia. Ah yes, the OG -Quests have registration fee -Weapons controls use the right joystick -No means to gather from maps without having to get into pre-existing undedicated quests -Monster materials eat up space at the inventory and the ones attained in quest rewards CANNOT be sent straight to item box. -Small monsters still don't give an f and would gang up with large monsters against you. -While this was something that's entirely new to 5th gen, the fact that QoL was so undeveloped back then made it hurt so much in retrospect: there were no weapon utility safety nets! Today we are spoiled with infinite use of Whetstones and a Normal Bullet lvl1 being available by default. Edit: Adding some more nostalgic inconveniences: -You can't capture monsters outside of capture quests, considering the limitations of the og game and how frequent monsters changed Area, capturing a sleeping monster could have been a time saver (OG). -Nearly every item procurement on the map is randomized, in 5th gen, utility and consumables-related items are guaranteed and doesn't initiate the "slot machine" animation (pre-5th gen). -The Book of Combos, and the inability to combine stuffs INSIDE the storage box which plagued the series until recent years. -Mining and Bug-catching used to be an economically exhausting activity because you needed breakable items to commit to those activities, which while can be crafted throughout combination, was simply way more convenient to buy... And of course, they consume space in your inventory. -Recovering health at camp was awkward af, you need to have your character do a lengthy animation of them throwing themselves onto a mattress (yes, they brought those effing mattresses to the wilderness) and take a short nap. Now camp-healing is not tied to animation, as your character heals automatically as you enter inside and you can do other stuff all the while.

I've been playing MHFU through an emulator recently with the goal of reaching G-Rank, and one thing I noticed about these older games (specifically Pre-3rd Gen) is that the game is incredibly unfair, but at the same time, it has so many exploits that make the monsters act like babies while you bash their skulls in with your hammer. Its unfair in the sense that monsters have hitboxes that make you cry, and that we have none of the quality of life changes we see today. On the other hand, monsters can get stunlocked so easily because of the lack of KO cooldowns, flash bomb and trap deteriorations, and easy to exploit AI that you CAN do, but you dont HAVE to. Comparing to what we have today, it's honestly amazing how tedious MHFU was, it makes me appreciate what we have today. Having said all that, MHFU is a ton of fun.

Hey I'm doing the exact same, almost done with high rank village and hub. Still got to fight the final boss and unlock the fatalis trio though. Probably going to put the playthrough on pause when sunbreak releases. I haven't seen too much of a need to exploit AI so far, except when you have to fight 2 monsters at once, then I just flash bomb spam until one dies or leaves. And strangely enough I've found High rank easier than low rank so far.

I saw this game sit on the shelf month after month year after year. I thought it looked okay but never payed it much attention but the price- never went down it stayed at its maximum listing and being a penny pincher youngin I was focused on other titles until .. one day I saw it and I don't exactly know why.. I finally picked it up and looked at it, I bought. To this day I tell everyone how great this game was. In the last few months that the game was up was when I had connected my playstation 2 backplate network adapter. I was finally able to play online. Alone in my room in the dark I played this game all day single player, it was so hard so frustrating. This game was literally an adventure unlike anything else I played before. The action combat, the way your weapon dulled and bounced off hard plate, it didnt punish you it simply changed the game. Everything had function and utility. The environments were peaceful I could literally sit and camp in them, the tall grass plains above the swamplands, or the roaring bubbling beneath the looming mountain. The sound of nature as light rays shown from the mysterious canopy of the lower ring of the forest hearing the ominous music. This game was so much darker and more mature than any of the other games. It was filled with a dark realism- A real roguelike with consequences. From the Egg quest avoiding the raptors chasing you figuring out how to do everything without a guide or any help from any community, to printing out the latest info from game helpers that were playing about armor sets and printing out concept art with Hunitar gear that was comparable to FF. I played this game in the final months of online. Nothing since captured that nostalgic anime-like mmo feel that anime itself portrays than monster hunter did. or has since then. You can feast drink eat and emote at the tavern and drink get drunk. stumble around and get into trouble. Nothing was known too much about recipes and it was all failures and learning from more experiences hunters at the time. To the coolest and most epic fight to this day. Mt Shao Lung. I remember my very first time fighting him. A literal walking mountain. Way, way cooler than the modern games, it was mono e mono a race against time with how much dps you could pump out and not getting killed trampled setting up bombs hacking at the legs to hunting Diabalos or later.. the black dragon. Its a bit nostalgia but also fact, I be sure to remember this game because its very much a part of who I am and how I hold games to standard. If it doesn't use feel good mechanics like monster hunter then why not. Its the baseline standard to tell what's wrong in games at times and always a source of inspiration for me. I played it so much even after the servers went offline. To the very last day to the last hour I- you know its funny I hadn't realized it until now but I'm getting faint flash back memories of the people and names I used to play with. If anyone remembers Jenova lemme know! I know there is at least one of you out there :D I hope time has been treating you well. Well, I kept playing single player as a form of protest for the shitty hand held ports to psp etc. I played so much I wore out the reading optics of the console. I was able to prolong my ps2 for a while but.. I was able to get full black dragon armor online. Probably one of the few people ever to have full dragon armor set as it was only craftable in town. I'm sure there is a way to emulate it but still. I got my data on a memory card now, still. I had to comment. I love this game. To this day. To clarify the majority of the content of this game is actually online, to my surprise. [about 40% single player 60% online]

Great video! I started with Freedom Unite myself, And I do kind of miss certains aspects of the older games. Not so much the slowness of gathering, but rather the feeling of being a trapper/hunter, facing large beast. Where modern games are more Anime fights against big bosses. Idk I think both new and old have amazing atmosphere, that's always been the series' strong suit imo. Different vibes tho for sure. The older games really make me feel like a I'm playing a critical but normal role in the community, like MHFU really makes me feel like I'm a hunter in a small mountain village that's just a tiny place in a massive world. On the other hand, the newer games, especially rise, make me feel like I'm some Hercules-esque hero, the defender of the known world in the face of the gods' fickleness and cruelty, but still very much a bound part of the world who can never truly match the power and majesty of the mythical things around us

Mh1 is basically THE game for people who like big big game hunting. As someone who played mh from 1 to world, i can safely say i fight almost like a monster (more specifically the diablos) nowadays with all the mastering of the gunlance. It's something else to be not only extremely strong at offense, but also in dodging and defense to the point it's just harassing all the monsters. I really do enjoy mh a whole lot. Damn, this brings me memories: I'm surprised that I got hooked into the game right from the start. I didn't play it on release, I think I first played it in 2008, but it was so different from all of the hack'n'slash game that were populating the PS2 that I got really invested in it right from the get-go. Looking back at it, I realized that most of the time I spent with the game was farming for resources and money. First gathering the Kut Ku scales from dung and then doing the "Liver of Legend" quest for money and spending countless hours at mining points going after those Machalite Ores. With that said, I still think it holds up pretty well. I mean, the core gameplay of Monster Hunter was already present in it and presented in a straight up manner: Kil monster -> Use its materials to craft its gear -> Use new equipment to kill tougher monsters -> Gather their materials and so on, its just that it lacks all of the QoL improvements we got with each new game in the series, with better controls (right stick analog for attacking was interesting back then, but I can't go back to it haha), better RNG, better monster AI, better mobility, access to farming items in the village, better and more rewards, less expensive crafting and purchasing, screen prompts for gathering/carving... If you take all of that way, you'll still get the original MH game, and I think that says a lot about how strong of a concept they had back then for this game that would eventually become a series.

My first game is 3u, and I used to say how it was really janky. After I bought a psp and monster hunter freedom, I really appreciate the quality of life features that made the game playable! Seriously, I spent FOREVER getting full iodrome armor and a iodrome bowgun, and i felt like it was UNUSABLE because of the god damn small monsters. Melee weapons are basically required solo. Combined with the fact that the psp was really not comfortable to play on, I just couldn't handle it. Now, I actually started playing the game again on an emulator, and it's a lot nicer to play with an xbox controller. What I really loved though was the dual blade progression. I finished the hurricane dual blade tree completely before even fighting velocidrome, which I found extremely funny. Mind you, it probably took me like 3 hours of mining to get all the materials to make the max dual blades, but I'd say it was worth it! Maybe...

I've played mh1 on emulator because i was curious how it seemed no one mentioned it all, and it kinda makes sense why. I'm a 5th gen player, but i think monster hunter 1 has a lot of aspects that I like in concept. Namely, it just has a ton of charm. I wish I could enjoy it, but the dated controls and clunkiness make it impossible for me. I would love to see this game remastered, change some of the more broken/blatantly unfair things, adapt it for modern controls, and have it in HD. I'd love to give this game a chance, agonizing grind and all, especially if I could access multiplayer.

There’s a port of the G-rank expansion of MH1; Monster Hunter: G, that’s on the Wii. It’s only in Japanese unfortunately but there is an English patch. You can also play it with the standard controls we have now (though with the limited movesets of 2nd Gen) and while it still has a lot of the slow clunkiness of MH1, it’s marginally more approachable. There’s also fan servers to access the online of the PS2 game, but only with the Japanese version, and believe it or not that one is slightly worse than the US version in terms of features.

Personally, I think Rise and World are a very good showcase of how difficulty should look. Both easy quests that casuals will enjoy, and more difficult challenges veterans will enjoy. In older games, you mostly had clunk and scaled up health to compensate for monsters being poorly designed. Underwater combat, even though all the veterans may love it, is kind of a gimmick which isn't that good, which is kinda sad, because Lagiacrus highly benefits from the system. As a guy who started with World, I just prefer newer games for less BS, but a complex game if you wanna invest in all of its mechanics.

Unfortunately that’ll never happen. It’s a fact that people don’t like difficult games. The easier it is, the more people like it. That’s why underwater is gone, that’s why people talk about the “quality of life” in world/rise even though most of it is just streamlining to help the player get to a dps boss fight as fast as possible, and changing monster hunters combat from positioning and commitment based combat to counter based combat, which requires drastically less skill. Along with many other things making the games easier but there’s too much to list here.

MH1 was my first game too and more recently while waiting for Sunbreak, I dug it out. My old character gave me nostalgia, but I let my Sweetheart play the game on a new save (I have a PS2 still that has survived). My Sweetheart's first game was MH4 Ultimate and after that was World, then Iceborne, and then Rise. So... After all my stories of the older games of Monster Hunter I've played through the years, they were interested in seeing just how big a difference MH1 from the much more recent versions was. They were actually very shocked that I hadn't been joking or exaggerating just how huge a difference there was from weapons available, to the controls (They had carpal-tunnel after three hours). I had never shown them my old character and they were surprised by how much work I put into it back then and then came the big question from them... "Why did you play all the other games until Tri?" Yeah... So here's the problem I had then, Tri felt depressing to me and it didn't help that my friends grew to hate the game and dropped it or that it felt so much more slower than even MH1 to me. So I gave up after completing it, because Tri ruined my feeling for Monster Hunter for awhile and my friends I played with did NOT want to play Tri anymore. Cut ahead years after and that's what I told my Sweetheart, that Tri, despite that I loved the story and stuff... Depressed me. When World came out I was pretty reluctant to try again after all those years, but I gave it a shot when my Sweetheart bought two copies. And I loved it. World rekindled a love for Monster Hunter I lost and now it was also easier to find friends to play with who liked to push challenges. It also had me using the Glaive more and after testing the weapons I was used to (Longsword, Dual Blades, Lance, Hunting Horn, and Greatsword) I began using the Kinsect Glaive the most as my main weapon. Then we went into Iceborne and then eventually Rise. It hasn't given me that depressing feeling since then and when I played Rise for the first time, there were monsters I had never encountered because I didn't keep going after Tri, so my Sweetheart got to see me fight my first ever Mizutsune (A monster they've grinded the daylights out of on MH4 Ultimate) and it was incredible to me with the soapy bubbles. And now Sunbreak is coming and... Well, when I saw Velociprey I was hit by a massive wave of nostalgia, because it's literally the first threat you can deal with in gen 1. Honestly, I don't think I'll ever replay Tri, but Rise has so far brought back a lot of nostalgia and World revived feelings I had for a game series I dropped. (Again, I love the series, but it was really lonely and depressing with Tri for me.) Now I'll probably be fighting the new and returning monsters with my Sweetheart and our close friends, and I really want to see my Sweetheart's reaction to Velocipreys even if they're weak raptors because they're a very nostalgic creature for me. Now if only I can make a Velociprey Greatsword for nostalgic reasons. I had to edit because I have a few bugged keys that either don't register or multiply when typed.

To Me monster hunter 1 is the definition of a game that is both over and underrated. I also went back to play through the whole thing last month and I was shocked how much I enjoyed the experience. I also used the lance and was a big fan of the Bone spear tree and the tusk tree. I feel like it's overhated more now than it rightly deserves as being untouchable mostly either by people who never played it or haven't played it in so long that it's just a distant memory. One big thing I recall thinking about the game prior to replaying it was how grindy it was, but in practice I almost never grinded at all re-playing it. Pretty much every weapon upgrade I was doing required only pretty common items like medium monster bones or earth crystals or something to get really far into it's tree, and since there wasn't a whole lot of skills on armor with a few exceptions and with the Kut ku armor only being around 3 pieces I wasn't stuck fighting the same things over and over and just sort of progressed as I was making things. The most time consuming thing really was making sure I had megapots going into the Rathalos fight because I had massively overestimated it in my head due to remembering it from my childhood being an insanely long and tough fight but it wasn't so bad really. Maybe lance is just that good in gen1. The right analogue combat is super unpleasant in certain fights or locations especially the jungle but most monsters don't really get on your blind spot that often so I rarely had to attack and turn the camera at the same time so found myself not using the claw nearly as much. As for the Bullfangos god yes, people joke about bullfango's and stuff still to this day but the joke kind of has no meaning in newer games where small monsters rarely interfere but good god are those vespoids out for blood in Mh1, Just trying to mind my own business hitting a mining node while 9 vespoids surround me from all angles is true pain. Fighting Basarios in particular was an interesting experience because of all the vespoids around him and his poison cloud instakilling them every so often, I just started thinking of it like they were part of his moveset as rotating drones cause they just keep coming back and being killed by the basarios even if you just focus on avoiding them. Is it as good as any of the later games? probably not, is it unplayable? Definitely not. did I regret replaying it? Nope was a fun weekend, even unlocked the postgame monsters. It also blew my mind when I realized the theme of the village subtly changes when you beat the monoblos for the first time, I never knew that and i don't even think that version of the theme is on youtube.

"Fighting Basarios in particular was an interesting experience because of all the vespoids around him and his poison cloud instakilling them every so often" When RageGamingVideos did a MH1 playthrough they actually mentioned that, pointing out how good of a Vespoid farm it is! to be honest, after all the torture Vespoid puts us through, especially in MH1; seeing Basarios essentially bug bomb them to death on repeat is quite satisfying!

Interesting to see the concept idea evolved into what we have today.

Uh-oh you stopped just before the true rookie breaker mission. For me it was the Cephalos hunt with the Greatsword. But for most its the first Egg Carry quest. Surviving that as a true rookie to the series is a true mind breaker. Even then -- if you beat the egg carry quest, beating the actual true Rathalos hunt after is the a real challenge for most to pull off in under 50 mins. I had 3-4 different friends give up on the game on either the Kut-ku hunt, the egg carry quest, or the Rathalos hunt. None of them made it past and i was still left playing the game by myself lol. Great video and retro recap there! Being a long time player of the game really makes the game far more playable thats for sure. I revisited it back on twitch years and years ago while waiting on the Wii U's release to happen so I could stream Monster Hunter Tri via HDMI output. Its definitely helps you appreciate the progress the series has made.

I remember first trying out Monster Hunter Freedom Unite and just instantly being captivated by it. A good friend got it for me on Christmas and was like "I remember you like monster and fantasy stuff and figure you would like this. I'm so happy I was introduced to it and have played them all ever since. The hype of fighting the first elder dragon was wack. I'm happy they added the fact that you can somewhat hunt with NPC's now/ The missions don't feel as lonely anymore. Take it from someone who also got to G rank in MHFU solo

back in the day, we japanese called it the "Teacher Cook". I wasn't sure why but now it makes sense. it was pretty educational as to how to deal with rathalos and such.

World was my first MH game. Had a lot of fun with it. Liked it enough to want to go back and try some of the older MH games.

for anyone daunted by the control schemes of MH1, theres a patch called MHplus that lets you use the modern control scheme instead :)

I'm pretty sure I remember the excessive flinching/stunlocking being a semi-unique feature to the lance back in MH1, like one of the viable strategies for Kut-Ku was focus the head with a lance like you were a hammer main.

Monster Hunter (PS2) (2004) was the first game I ever preordered. Going into the game, I knew I wanted to use bowguns... big mistake. Killing Cephadrome in under 50 minutes was an absolute brick wall using a light bowgun, so I upgraded to the heavy bowgun. I was able to complete all the single-player missions with the heavy bowgun, but when I revisited the game, I realized how much easier everything was with pretty much any melee weapon.

I played this back in 2006 and I was very young back then, I didn't know the next thing about what the game was trying to tell me but I kept playing because I loved it, a game that's not holding my hand all the time called my attention, it took me months of playing to get even to rank 4 quests, just building weapons and sets still without knowing exactly what I was doing but I kept pushing on, my first successful Rathalos hunt is still burned onto me, and to this day apart from online play the only thing I never managed to pull off is the Rathalos and Rathian quest, I really should check for my PS2 file

The little explanation of camera controls makes sure that my first experience with this game (if I do play it) is definitely going to be emulated.
