While this is a very detailed and factual video, it misses the mark about his base personality as evidenced in other KZbin videos that compare the captains. It does not mention that Sisko is a family man who is comfortable around children of all ages. Nor does it mention that Sisko is a very personable captain who cooks for his crew, played baseball with them and even joined them to save Vic Fontaine’s holosuite nightclub. And leaving out the part where he joined Vic onstage as they both sang, “The Best is Yet to Come.” Is downright villainy. None of these were mentioned in the video and I believe they were the most valuable traits he possessed... attributes that brazenly separated him from the other captains. All you did was focus on the grim side of him. The latter part of this video is a disservice.

Everyone on the enterprise was a bit of a weirdo, esp when it came to family and love lives. DS9's crew was infinitely more human across the board. @@WobblesandBean It was written by a bunch of overly idealistic lefties, and followed a model of peace at any price, you basically have cruise liners in space going up against other groups who only field warships in battle. You should have had the science/medical/support ships and then just straight warships to do the dedicated fighting. Have the federation split into distinct branches civilian and military.

The federation could literally stomp all these empires in a year with multi vector assault defiants, which I have no doubt they could mass produce. The federation is literally just an oligarchy where the ruling elite are lazy and fat on their own morality. The one thing I say always about Sisko and that is that he is the one most like an actual military officer. I grew up with military officers all around me, my mom was in the air force as well as my granddad, both of them retired from there and growing up watching star trek I realized that Picard is a great diplomat but not the absolute best representation of what I know military officers to be like, but Sisko checks all the boxes and then some.
@WhydoIsuddenlyhaveahandle7 ай бұрын
Well said. I, too, grew up in a military family. Picard (although I love him for different reasons) always came off was a bit naive at first, openly saying Starfleet was not a military organization in Season 2. Obviously ridiculous. He ended up showing immense courage, though. Diplomat is a great name for him. I also like philosopher. Sisko, in one word: Soldier
@MetaSynForYourSoul6 ай бұрын
@WhydoIsuddenlyhaveahandle I swear, "Starfleet is *_NOT_* a military organization." is drilled in me head like so much propaganda. It's ridiculous. You are literally organized like a military, a navy specifically. Chain of command, Ranks, not to mention weapons of mass destruction at the disposal of every captain in the fleet. They don't even gotta check with someone before destroying a planets ecosystem. It's a military and a super dangerous one at that. That being said, I'm glad humanity, at least for the most part, seems capable of handling it. Picard being the utmost example of such a person. But I think the Dominion war reminded us that we still have "That" instinct. And Sisko is the pinnacle of, "When the job needs getting done, send this guy." I truly think of him like that. Simply because idk if any of the other captains, except maybe Kirk, can reach down into the level of ruthlessness required to win an all out war. But that's why I love him.
@manolitohosea81445 жыл бұрын
Ben Sisko was a consummate jack of trades: master of diplomacy, able to unite warring factions, dispense justice, and overcome obstacles with non-conventional tactics. He knew when to be direct,(the Sisko bark) and when to use humor to diffuse tense circumstances, (the only Captain to be seen laughing, other than Kirk and Janeway), and when to GO THERE(punching Q and getting the Romulans into the war against the Dominion). He was a well-rounded and multi-dimensional character thanks to some great writing and a well defined character arc.

"In The Pale Moonlight" is my favorite DS9 episode. Especially the ending when he was looking for the excuse to except for what he had done for the greater good while recording his captain's log. Then deleted it because of the guilt he was feeling. He barely showed any emotion in that scene, and he didn't have to. You could feel the weight on that decision, and it made you ask yourself, would've you done the same thing?

Oh wow. That is hands down a fantastic video! Reciting the Memory Alpha content is one thing, drawing an exhaustive yet still concise character profile another altogether... I watched DS9 several times and Sisko is certainly one of my favorite characters from all of Trek (nope, not all series leads are), yet you made me realize things about his character that I never thought of before. Especially, I often viewed his witch hunt of Eddington as kinda a one-off episode, one that doesn't fit into his character. "He would never really have gone THAT far, would he?" I was thinking. Your synopsis puts that in a good context with the rest of his character. His actions were certainly extreme, but I kinda think I understand him better now... and understand that and why he went that far. Certainly gained a sub and I'm looking forward to more of those videos! You seem to be quite good in judging a character.

In the Pale Moonlight was one of my favorites because it showed that Sisko was a man that could be corrupted so to speak. I think Sisko was a great counterpart to Picard. Picard, for the most part, was a kind of "By the letter of" and Sisko was more "In the spirit of" kind of leader. By the end of the episode Sisko is shown to be capable of committing evil in the name of the greater good once he's fallen low enough like seeing names of people he knows killed in the war week after week. I think one of the many reasons Sisko became my favorite captain is because they show that despite him being an exceptional leader he is also a flawed human being and capable of being driven by negative emotions.

Glad you mentioned Archer. One thing I like about him is he is a great middle ground between us now and Kirk's time. He has some of our rash traits, but also comes off as wanting something more evolved. He comes off as almost cute, trying to be an explorer. But, when it came down to it, he was willing to grow a sentient life form to murder it for body parts, become a pirate to steal a war coil, and murder Xindi at an unarmed station to save Earth, similar to us. That was such a tough character balance to act out. Even though Enterprise got canceled, I thought Archer was an excellent addition to the story.

I think Worf needs a Personel File. He is an interesting character to analyze, imo.

The most human captain of them all. The fact that he cooks csirke paprikás is just the cherry on the cake. (Hungarian here lol ) I just love him , all the way , he is my favourite

During the Dominion War I would like to have seen a moment where the Enterprise comes to help and fight and Sisko and Picard have a conversation where Sisko forgives Picard for the Borg attack

I've seen an argument that a lot of Lily's role in _First Contact_ could have been filled by Sisko with minimal changes needed, but it was never gonna happen; Rick Berman despised DS9

Captain Sisko had all the qualities of a great commander and yet was the most complex of the captains of Star Trek. Avery Brookes brought this character to life in a way few others could.

Sisko left reality as we know it to perform tasks with the prophets because he is one. When he told Cassidy that he was coming back and she said, when? He replied yesterday, today, or tomorrow. In my opinion, I think this is why all the other Star Treks after Voyager are on different timelines. Sisko is coming back!

I still dont get why there were families on board of the ships fighting at Wolf 359. I mean... they went into battle and did not evacuate the families first? Why?

Love this video, but the one thing you have forgotten about is the books that come after the tv show. If I’m correct in one of the books Sisko does indeed come back months or a year later. The name of the book escapes me at the moment though.

Holy hannah, do I HATE the ending of DS9. To me, it did such a great disservice to Ben Sisko, because I don't believe for a second that this was what he really wanted.
@SHBazTBone5 жыл бұрын
It absolutely wasn't what he wanted. But it's what the Prophets and the story demanded. He wanted to retire to Bajor. The Prophets stated he will find no rest there. He wanted to be there for his child`s birth and wife's side. The Prophets said no, I think because he defied then by marrying her. The ending with Dukat was rushed for sure but absolutely perfect for this man who fought against the faith and destiny for the entirety of the show to be ultimately bound to it.

I don't understand why Star Fleet would give such a post as DS9, which was tasked to aid the Bajorans in rebuilding after the war and preparing to join the federation, to someone with no diplomatic experience, no political experience, no large scale operations experience, and no civil engineering experience. It seems he was skilled in ship design and small vessel command and none of that is sufficient preparation for this post. And this post was so important. Not only did he have to do what was already stated, but he had to keep the peace in an area of space that could easily erupt right back into war. Surely there were better people to command the station.
@maxxcreese99116 жыл бұрын
and that is the point. at the time the federation was strong arrogant and full of themselves, thinking that they could ( except for the borg) handle anything. for them this was a throwaway mission using castoffs and oddities, if it failed so be it and they would of sent in those that could handle the job. little did they know that they did but not in the way they envisioned...

two of my favorite episodes where he is concerned are DAX and Explorers. explores was a cool one for seeing him in a less formal role pursuing an interest and proving a questioned element of Bajoran history. DAX is a really good example of him pursuing the truth adamantly and the extraordinary lengths that he will go to to protect not only the innocent but a close friend, but also shows how much he agonizes over considering the possibility that his close friend may actually be guilty.

Benjamin Sisko was the personification of "My boot, Your ass!" The Defiant embodied "I'm gonna kick your punk ass and your gonna thank me for it"! I miss these two bad ass!

Great presentation. I think Sisko is the most 'human' starfleet captain. Kirk is 'perfect', Picard never had any women (?) or family... Sisko was written to show a more well rounded man in that captain's chair. Love the episodes with his Pops, son and Kasidy Yates. The Dominion War was an awesome series... wish the Defiant was bigger...
