Here's my theory on what this story is: they are both lonely but they cannot be together because of what they are, the boy being winter and death and the girl being summer and life. They are incompatible in every meaning of the word, being complete opposites in nature. Because of their persuasion over nature their very existences do not allow them to be anywhere near each other without something disastrous happening, thus making them forever alone.

It's not either/or. They're metaphors for each other: winter = death & summer = life. They're also dependent on each other: living things depend on decay/dead things to sustain life (like fertile soil), while death comes from life.

Actually the whole thing was about the seasons changing. When death (the boy) was gaining on life (the girl), it killed everything, like in autumn. This caused life to be afraid and try to run and hide, like in winter. But right before death completely overtook life, it retreated, like in spring. Then life came back and brought everything back to life, like in summer. Then at the end, it was just showing the continuous balance between the seasons. :)

+Rinnay Shinimi (Rin) Well. It is called First Autumn (in french). Which is the meeting points between winter and summer. But as Brave Merenda said it makes more sense for it to be about life and death since most greenery come in spring, which is also a transitional season, and not summer.
