The Vanguard brings the fantasy of the classic tabletop Bullgryn to life with an offensive twist. This setup uses mostly Skullbreaker talents to enable maximum melee prowess. Instead of Unstoppable, it leverages taunts from Loyal Protector and Attention Seeker to acquire and hold aggro to enable the team. Routing through unstoppable also opens up a path to Ammo Stash that a pure Skullbreaker won’t have access to.
The vanguard can function with many weapon setups, but with both taunting talent options a shield is a perfect fit. The powerful high cleave heavies of the shield are perfect for applying bleed to an enormous number of enemies via Batter. A Skullcrusher blessing and Soften ‘Em Up both further increase this bleed damage, chewing through any and all heretics that cross your path.
With Heavy Hitter and Dominate, even elite packs will crumple before you. The rending bonus from Dominate even applies to bleed, making it do good damage to normally resistant enemies like crushers. Just Getting Started is a wonderful pairing for shield to help mitigate its typically slow attack speed.
In the upper portion of the tree, the Vanguard takes most of the available toughness regeneration options. This ensures that he can always stay topped in any situation. Later down the tree we have Delight in destruction for massive damage reduction while surrounded by bloody enemies, which when combined with The Best Defense and Smash Em! truly means that an unrelenting offense is your impenetrable defense. In typical Ogryn fashion, your shield will shield you by being used as a weapon first and foremost.
With a Grenade Gauntlet, the classic tabletop loadout is complete. This pocket sniper is a great complement to a melee oriented playstyle, letting you quickly swap and pick off pesky specialists and ranged elites before getting right back to krumping heretics. With Ammo Stash you’ll be able to let loose whenever you need to without worry. This little taste of Gunlugger means that even in forced long range engagements, the Vanguard can keep dishing out the damage with abandon.

Am I the only one slightly disappointed that the Grenadier gauntlet can't be used in combination with the slab-shield?

Haha no, this has been a common complaint since the game released.

​@@hankjw_dt Especially since you can see multiple pictures of Ogryns that have a slab shield in one hand and the grenadier gauntlet in the other. Was just so shocking that this wasn't found in the game. :(
