Omg I get so happy when I see foreigners coming to my country, trying our food, experiencing our culture, I hope you had a great time in Quito, Ecuador 🇪🇨 I also wanted to mention that the reason why it has harder to find encebollado in Quito even though it's a super famous dish here is because the dish is originally from the cost and idk but some people (myself included) think it's prepered better at the cost, but I'm really really glad you like it, it's a strong and super tasty dish

Wow, I finally caught up to you. I came across your vlog a few weeks back when looking for places to visit along the California central coast. There were several such vlogs, but most lacked the personality and joy of yours. So I went back to the start of your journey, where I thought "holy smokes, fresh out of college, just married - you guys are nuts!". But danged if you didn't make it work. And your wonder at the world made me so happy. I was just a little sad that my viewing was behind you, because I kept wanting to say, "Hey, I lived there, you should see this or that (or eat at this place)". So now I'm caught up and can put my two cents in. First, I assume you know about another adventuresome travel vlogger who recently converted an SUV, Eva zu Beck - if not, I highly recommend her channel. Second, when you come to Korea, let me know. It's my second country, I speak the language, have lived and visited there many times over the past 50 years, my wife is from there, and I'm technically a dual citizen - so if I happen to be there when you visit, we must get together, but even if not (we live in Altadena, California), I can advise you and introduce you to people. For example, there's a certain guesthouse in 전주 old town that you must stay at - be prepared for long stories that may have some elements of truth.........
@ChadandClaire3 жыл бұрын
We definitely had some fights along the way, but we think our year in the van made us a much better team. We are excited to hear your two cents on all of our future videos! :) We'll have to check out her channel as well! I'm sure you've already heard all about "Squid Game" on netflix but we just recently finished it and are blown away by Korean films. Anyways. We will certainly keep in touch as we plan to go to korea hopefully soon and we would feel honored to stay in your guesthouse.
@SDongil3 жыл бұрын
@@ChadandClaire Of course - we've been married since '74, and fights are part of the journey. Korean TV shows (the movies get into Korean tastes for French noir cinema, although 'Parasite' was quite good). I really enjoyed 'Goblin" because the actors are very good, and the story includes Korean myths and notions about death and rebirth. Good stuff. For an action flick, try 'Healer' (the female lead is an accomplished judo player, but you never see it, sadly) (I know this because our daughter-in-law's older sister is a judo teacher, backup on the national team). Ahem -reasonable assumption that it's my guesthouse, but it's not - it belongs to Yi Seok, a son of Yi Kang and grandson of Emperor Kojong. He firmly believes he is the true king, although Korean succession doesn't work by strict rules - the elders select who they feel is best for the job, and they felt Yi Seok was not. But he's a very interesting guy, in his 70s somewhere, has had a checkered career to say the least. Really fun to talk to, and I'm pretty sure he speaks English. We know him because my wife is related on the maternal side.

Just to clarify what 'SECO' means: In Ecuador, as a staple food tradition, we typically have two parts to our meal - the soup and the second course, which is essentially a stew made with various meats like pork, chicken, and more. During the early 20th century, there was an English presence in the coastal region of Ecuador where they were working. After finishing their soup course, they would ask for the 'second' course. The locals, attempting to mimic the name, adopted the term 'SECO' for this second course." PS: Naranjilla in Colombia is called LULO not Ludo. :) Your welcome.

Awesome video. Thank you! I was a tad sad that you chose things other than what you ate before. The flavors can be different. For instance, the shrimp ceviche you had before looks very different than the Ecuadorian version. When it comes to ceviche, Ecuador is the best! The variety is insane!! Most other countries have only fish ceviche, and a shrimp cocktail than Ecuadorian shrimp ceviche. Shrimp is the most popular ceviche in Quito, or at least it was when I lived there. Having said that, it rocks that you ate all the different things you ate, including a non-fish ceviche. :) Next time you visit try the ceviche mixto, (ceviche mixture). You get all kinds of different ceviches in one dish its fepic! :)

Also, FYI, the wind empanadas aren't that big. They are a regular-size empanadas. The massive monster you guys ate is likely a gimmick to impress guests in that particular restaurant.

Great video! And being a foodie myself, I loved to see a few things I haven't tried. I would also like to offer up suggestions for a few of my favorites for you to try as you travel throughout Ecuador. I started watching your videos when you were in Peru and haven't missed one since. They bring back good memories of our travels through South America and give us ideas for our future trips.

Beautiful video, great food choices! Ecuador has a very diverse cuisine, from tropical and coastal foods to Andean foods. Naranjilla is also one of the ingredients used in Seco de Chivo, great in savoury and sweet dishes and juices, but I never recommend it as a fruit on its own. Just a little correction, the church you visited is a Basilica, not a Cathedral. Generally, a Basilica is built and funded by the people for the church, while a Cathedral is build and funded by the church for the people (More or less). Keep it up, you guys are awesome!

Good video. Ecuadorian gastronomy is NOT a fusion of Peruvian and Colombian, it is it’s own! It’s logic to find similar products, hence some ingredients may overlap in the boarders but that’s it. You can’t have a cangrejada, tigrillo, bolón, fritada (amongst many others) in those countries for example, you can only get them in Ecuador, also some ecuadorian dishes are popular in the neighbor countries’ only in the peripheries cities such as encocado that belongs to Ecuador. Also concha negra is not clam, it’s different. 😊

jajajajajaja eating encebollado at night like we do in Guayaquil, could you get more Ecuadorian? I certainly doubt it. Encebollado is a breakfast dish after a heavy night out for 'costeños' and it's hard to get one during night time mostly in the highlands. If you guys ever venture into the coast, here's a list of dishes you MUST try. 1. Real encebollado. 2. Guatita. 3. Cazuela. 4. Viche. 5. Bolon. 6. Encocado. 7. Caldo de Manguera. 8. Caldo de Bolas. 9. Seco de Chivo. 10. Tigrillo. 11. Cangrejos. 12. Ostras. And if you're still in the highlands go to the 'Mercados' and try different 'Caldos' those are highland delicacies, yahuarlocro, caldo de 31 and some others.
