Who did first-century Jews think was meant by the “neighbor” we are to love-their fellow Jews, Samaritans, Gentiles? How are the actions of the priest and Levite specifically “religious sins”? How does Hosea 6 and a Greek verb highlight that the Samaritan is a Christ figure? What story from 2 Chronicles may have been the inspiration behind the parable? These and other questions, Chad Bird addresses in this week’s Reading the Gospels through Hebrew Eyes.

Brilliant! As usual. Another element of those who passed by- self preservation. The robbers may still be around or they may have left him as bait to trap us. Prayers and Peace. Via con Dios

Thank you for all your teachings. I am learning so much. I was wondering if one day you could teach what the Apostle Paul means in 2 Timothy 4:6-8. What does he mean, he is being poured out as a drink offering? Thank you. May The LORD richly bless you.

There are a couple of Old Testament ideas he is echoing. The more obvious one is that of sacrifice. He is, as an impending martyr, giving the ultimate sacrifice of his own life for the sake of the gospel. Secondly, the idiom of being poured out is a common one in the psalms. The Psalmist will talk about how he pours out his soul within himself. The pouring out is another way of expressing the giving of one’s entirety to something else.

@@chadbird1517 Hi brother..I Recently heard that it wasn't only Joshua and Caleb who entered the promised land from the Group that came out of Egypt. There is a theory that says Eleazar who was born in Egypt Also entered because he was the priest .can you bring some clarity on that?

It's a crying shame that the lectionary includes Lev. 19:18 but not vss. 33 and 34.

Why were priests not touching? I think they were unclean all the time outside of temple after their task..... What do you think?

They weren’t unclean outside the temple unless they contracted ritual impurity by, for example, touching a corpse. In order to avoid that, the priest kept his distance.

WOW! Did you ever miss the mark with this one. We represent the one in the ditch nearly dead (or dead in our sins) destitute and unable to do anything for ourselves. The Law and religion passing by were unwilling/unable to do anything about our plight, but the Samaritan (Jesus) came and had pity on us all. He poured wine (His blood) and oil (Holy Spirit) on the unfortunate put him on His ass and took him to where all are welcome. He paid the price for his entire keep and not only that He will pay any other expense when He comes back. Jesus paid it all. Nothing or anybody can remove us from His care.
