Too bad the Gracies don't live up to their name GRACIE. They show no grace. I don't like dishonesty in the martial arts. Most Gracie fights ONLY take place under Gracie rules with mats cushioned like pillows so the Gracies won't get injured when they are slammed into the mat over and over again. READERS PLEASE CALL ME A LIAR AND RESEARCH THE FIGHTS IN AN EFFORT TO PROVE ME WRONG ! I IMPLORE YOU TO LOOK INTO WHAT I SAY. Then you will know that I speak the truth. You might not admit it, but you will know. I advise you to subscribe to Chadi if you want to learn about martial arts history and the politics involved in them in the past and today. I was trained by a Sensei from Paris and grew in Judo under the Kawaishi System. In case you don't know who Mikonsuke Kaiwashi was, he's the guy who wrote a book showing every move the Gracies use long before Helio Gracie claims to have invented them. Chadi, you are a fantastic martial arts historian. I am subscribed and rang the bell. Thank you for all the great videos.

Funny how there is more footage of this fight than the Helio vs. Kimura match... I would really like to see that entire 13 minute match. Notice how they fought in a ring in this match and then on an open mat against Kimura? Kato almost threw Helio out of the ring but was saved by the ropes.

We need the entire footage of all matches, Santana kimura and Kato, there's a lot to unpack
@davidlopez72094 жыл бұрын
The ring was a set up for that very reason. It was meant to make great judo players look bad and to buffer their skills to give Helio a chance to steal some glory. It takes a lot of skill to launch a taller fighter the way Kato did with that Harai, seriously. All of the time and patience, the discipline and sacrifice it took to be that good at something just to get cheated in the end. Making your name off of someone by making them look bad instead of beating them. That's why they sent Kimura and sadly that's why Kimura didn't kill Helio.
@juliencharlet36724 жыл бұрын
@tupacamaru2 I've been looking for years and that's the only footage I've seen. Call it a conspiracy theory but I believe Helio and brothers bought the rights to the footage to keep it away from the public to view. I truly believe Rorion has it locked away in a safe in Rio and will keep it with him to his grave... lol If you read Kimura's account in his book "My Judo" there was 10 minutes in the 1st round and Kimura wrote that he used that 1st round to throw Helio around and put on a show for the Japanese crowd. He stated that his throws had no effect on Helio due to the softness of the mats. Kimura was known for giving his opponents concussions with his famous osoto gari. None of Kimura's nagewaza is shown though. It's edited straight to the 2nd round. I know this because Kimura stated he would use newaza to finish Helio off in the 2nd round which he did with ude garami. This is all written in Kimura's book "My Judo".

correct ! Kimura didn't think Helio could beat Kato nor did he think Helio could last as long as he did while fighting him...Kimura even invited Helio to Japan to learn more about his "survival" jiu jitsu. Helio didnt plan on winning against Kimura( who was MUCH larger and stronger), but was curious just how long he could survive Kimuras submission attempts. Also Helio did not promote "double palm down" collar chockes that require more strength from the arms& shoulders. He believed that both palms up or one palm down collar chokes require less strength and uses less energy by using more of your back muscles.

Also, most of judo's ground revolution was not created by Kano but rather guys who came later like Kanemitsu(joined kodokan in 1910) and Oda(joined kodokan in 1909). Guys like Tomita, Maeda, and Satake and many others left japan in 1904. Even if Kanemitsu and Oda were geniuses, they had to split their time with both stand up and groundfighting. So let's say they didn't really start advancing judo newaza until 10 years after they joined the kodokan (say around 4th dan). That puts the timeline of judo ground revolution around 1920 +. Way past when many guys like Tomita, Maeda, Satake left japan. Also there are even more evidence that whatever the gracies learned wasn't kodokan groundwork based on Oda and Kanemitsu. The fact that they didn't know about the triangle choke from the guard until dam near the 70's when one of rolls students got a hold of an old judo manual.

You need a way to contain the match to a small space. Mats themselves don't do that. If you're going to criticize the ropes then you should present an effective alternative. You would need a much bigger mat, a set of rules and a lot of interference by the ref to contain the match without structure, and it would have to be down off the platform on the floor. That setup might not fit available venues. A cage would be better, but perhaps interfere even more with throws. In a real fight there would be virtual certainty of much more obstacles to avoid. If you don't like the ropes, it's up to you to avoid them.

The mats nerf throws the same way taps nerf joint locks and chokes. Judo uses then ippon score due to this nerfing. Both the tap and the force full throw score ippon to the victor. Eliminating acknowledgment of the ippon from the throw is a kin to making a rule where joint locks and chokes can only be done with the pinky. It completely nerfs the spirit of the contest and allows the continuation of the beaten party.

The whole point of it was to do a real fight with the minimum possible rules. Sure, the hand fighting is slow, but when you represent a full martial art by yourself, you are very prudent and cautious, you don't throw yourself in middle of a mess. There are ALWAYS different/conflicting versions of “history.” “History” is always an interesting exercise in gaining perspective but at the end of the day, a hundred people telling the history of a topic will result in 100 different versions. 100 people examining the same historical documents will have 100 different conclusions (although some will have common conclusions). The lazy among us read one (or some) of the 100, choose the one(s) they like best, and proclaim that as the “true” history. But in the end, the only ones who truly know, are the parties involved in the making of history, and the first hand witnesses.
